Book excerpt: The importance of vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness, and inference generation abilities in reading comprehension has been Jong established in the first language research. By contrast, fewer studies have documented the role of these components in the reading comprehension of English language learners in the field of second language (L2) research. The proposed study thus examines the role of vocabulary knowledge. syntactic awareness, and inference skills in L2 reading comprehension in young learners. who have age-appropriate word decoding ability and the required phonological processing ability. Two of the primary aims of the study were to establish vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness and inference generation ability as distinguishable psychological constructs, and to examine the strength of the relations between the constructs and with respect to reading comprehension. The third aim was to find out whether vocabulary knowledge, syntactic awareness and inference generation ability explain differences between less skilled and skilled L2 readers, and whether the correlations between the constructs and reading comprehension were different for less skilled and skilled L2 readers. Throughout the book, consciously used the terms -skilled- and -less skilled-comprehenders, since the term 'poor comprehenders' is used in a very specialized way to refer 10 learners, vho haye an underlying deficit. In our study. no clinical assessments were done and therefore there was no way to establish that poor comprehension was due to an underlying deficit or due to external factors like teaching methodology, reading exposure. or socio-economic background. To be on the safer side, learners who had low reading comprehension (less than 0.4 standard deviation below age-appropriate and comprehension mean) were referred to as 'less skilled comprehenders.' The term also distinguished them from 'poor readers- a label often used in the reading research literature to refer to learners who have weak decoding skills.

Book excerpt: Confirmatory factor analysis suggested the two-factor model of Vocabulary Knowledge/Syntactic Awareness and Metacogntive Awareness offered the best fit to the data. Structural equation modeling indicated that 87% variance in reading comprehension is explained by the Vocabulary Knowledge/Syntactic Awareness and Metacognitive Awareness factors taken together. However, Vocabulary Knowledge/Syntactic Awareness has a stronger relationship to reading comprehension than metacognitive awareness does. MANCOVA indicated significant differences between poor and good readers in both constructs. Multigroup analyses using structural equation modeling suggested the correlation between the Vocabulary Knowledge/Syntactic Awareness and Metacognitive Awareness in poor readers was the same across poor-reader and good-reader groups. Similarly, the pattern of relations of Vocabulary Knowledge/Syntactic Awareness and Metacognitive Awareness to reading comprehension remained constant across the poor-reader and good-reader groups.

Book excerpt: Vocabulary knowledge is the building block of learning a second language and the degree of success for learning any language depends on the amount of vocabulary a learner possesses. Vocabulary knowledge contributes to mastering language skills (reading, listening, writing, and speaking). Therefore, the present study aims at determining the role of vocabulary size in reading comprehension among Saudi EFL learners. The participants of this study included 64 male students who studied at the first level in the academic year 2018/2019 at King Khalid University. Both the Vocabulary Size Test developed by (Schmitt et al.) and reading comprehension test taken from the TOEFL preparation manual were used to collect the necessary data for the study. The results of the study revealed that the overall vocabulary size of Saudi EFL learners was 2025 word families. This amount helps students to comprehend 90% of written texts as pointed out by many researchers in this field. The results also showed a significant relationship between vocabulary size and reading comprehension. Vocabulary knowledge is an important predictor for comprehending written texts. The study provides some implications for educational stakeholders such as putting more emphasis on teaching vocabulary and using different teaching strategies that assist in the acquisition of vocabulary in general and academic vocabulary in particular.
