Thomas Leppelt contributes to extant sustainability literature across the research disciplines of supply chain management, management and marketing by cross-functionally investigating the effects of sustainability on supplier-buyer relationships from both a supplier and a buyer perspective. The results of in total three academic articles provide valuable insights on how buyers as well as suppliers deal with sustainability upstream and downstream the supply chain. The results indicate that sustainability leaders, in contrast to sustainability followers, intensively invest in sustainable supplier relationship management practices. Moreover, a became evident that the effective marketing of sustainability-related capabilities enhances a supplier’s reputation and can render comparative advantages, if it sends consistent positive signals to the market and if it integrates purchasing and marketing in the context of sustainability.

It has caused firms to be confronted with rising public attention to this particular subject. In order to cope with the mentioned development, companies started to manifest the sustainability of their operations in widely used voluntary sustainability standards today. However, the fact that supply chains have rather become complex supply chain networks nowadays hampers the process of successfully ensuring compliance with these standards. Besides, in the perception of consumers any breaches of sustainability standards in the supply chain fall back onto the brand owner, and subsequently pose major risks to buyer companies. Thus, buyer firms eagerly seek to enforce their standards throughout the supply chain. Among other factors the power distribution between the players in the supply chain has an impact on the likelihood that buyer companies manage to enforce their sustainability standards. The thesis at hand therefore investigates the influence of different power relationships in the supply chain on the compliance achievement process. In that course the buyer, supplier, sub-supplier triad is analysed in depth as an excerpt and simplifying approximation of the focal supply chain network. Five case studies are subsequently reviewed in order to come up with propositions of which power circumstances support the buyers' endeavour to successfully ensure compliance with their sustainability standards.

This situation is relevant to firms operating in developing countries where it is hard to make suppliers pay penalties for poor quality. Because buyers are concerned with such quality issues as nonhazardous chemical content for their products, enforceability becomes particularly important. In the first chapter, we study sustainability issues in supply chains and classify the methods used by industries to make suppliers comply with environmental requirements: integrating sustainability into products, managing manufacturing processes and managing supplier relationships. We discuss the academic literature related to the proposed taxonomy and suggest directions for future research. The second chapter introduces dynamic memoryless contracts that use self-enforcing penalties to discipline suppliers under poor legal enforcement. Our model bridges two areas of research: relational contracts and dynamic moral hazard with complete contracting. We use the framework of a two-level supply chain with one-sided moral hazard and imperfect monitoring. The relationship is a repeated game in which the partnership can be terminated by the buyer if the supplier refuses to pay penalties for quality violation. After termination, the buyer and supplier start searching for new business partners. Considering markets with homogeneous suppliers and homogeneous buyers, we assume that the solution to this game is a symmetric perfect public equilibrium. The buyer makes a commitment to a compensation scheme, and optimal contracts have dynamic form.The optimal contract is characterized by non-decreasing expected profits for suppliers, non-decreasing penalties for quality failures and non-increasing defect rates. We offer a procedure to build a dynamic equilibrium, which is used to approximate an optimal equilibrium. Intuitively, buyers create non-decreasing compensation and penalties to discipline suppliers through an artificial increase in the suppliers' termination costs. The third chapter focuses on specific cases of the dynamic relational equilibrium: stationary and two-stage equilibria. We characterize these equilibria and perform sensitivity analyses to compare all equilibria and to understand how key parameters influence their efficiency."--Abstract.

The first is emergence of the supply chain as a critical strategic and tactical weapon. However, with the advent of the supply chain, it is important to recognize that we have to view strategic objectives within a context that stresses not simply the internal operations of the firm but also the elements of the supply chain - elements that include the supplier base, customers, logistics linkages, and relationships, both visible and virtual. We are now coming to realize that the supply chain is no stronger than its weakest link. The second development is that of sustainability. This is more than simply being environmentally responsible. Rather, it is overall sustainability as measured in terms of the firm's ability to reduce waste, improve profitability, generating strategic competitive advantages, and ensure that it treats its employees well. Sustainability is increasingly becoming at a minimum an expectation and a requirement for doing business (i.e., an order qualifier) and under many conditions something that differentiates firms and makes them more attractive to potential critical consumers (i.e., an order winner). These two developments, while often treated as separate entities, are interrelated. It is this interrelationship that forms the major focus and thrust of this book. This book presents the reader with an integrated, business oriented treatment of sustainable supply chain management that explores why it is no longer enough for a firm to focus on sustainability within the four walls of the firm. Rather, in today's environment, sustainability must involve the supply chain in a deliberate and integrated fashion. To succeed with sustainability, a firm must ensure that this outcome is not only present within the firm but is also present within the supply chain. As the book will show, the market and consumers will punish those firms that promise sustainability but are not able to deliver on this promise because of problems in the supply chain.
