Book Synopsis Rural Wealth Creation by : John L. Pender
Download or read book Rural Wealth Creation written by John L. Pender and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of wealth in achieving sustainable rural economic development. The authors define wealth as all assets net of liabilities that can contribute to well-being, and they provide examples of many forms of capital – physical, financial, human, natural, social, and others. They propose a conceptual framework for rural wealth creation that considers how multiple forms of wealth provide opportunities for rural development, and how development strategies affect the dynamics of wealth. They also provide a new accounting framework for measuring wealth stocks and flows. These conceptual frameworks are employed in case study chapters on measuring rural wealth and on rural wealth creation strategies. Rural Wealth Creation makes numerous contributions to research on sustainable rural development. Important distinctions are drawn to help guide wealth measurement, such as the difference between the wealth located within a region and the wealth owned by residents of a region, and privately owned versus publicly owned wealth. Case study chapters illustrate these distinctions and demonstrate how different forms of wealth can be measured. Several key hypotheses are proposed about the process of rural wealth creation, and these are investigated by case study chapters assessing common rural development strategies, such as promoting rural energy industries and amenity-based development. Based on these case studies, a typology of rural wealth creation strategies is proposed and an approach to mapping the potential of such strategies in different contexts is demonstrated. This book will be relevant to students, researchers, and policy makers looking at rural community development, sustainable economic development, and wealth measurement.
Book Synopsis Precautionary Saving from Different Sources of Income by : Richard H. Adams
Download or read book Precautionary Saving from Different Sources of Income written by Richard H. Adams and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of past literature has assumed that households in developing countries save at the same marginal rate from all sources of income. But in rural Pakistan households save at very different marginal rates from different sources of income. The marginal propensity to save from those sources of income that are more variable and uncertain --- like external remittances --- is much higher than from those sources of income that are more predictable --- like rental income.
Book Synopsis The Economics of Saving by : James H. Gapinski
Download or read book The Economics of Saving written by James H. Gapinski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book began when a letter reached my desk in November 1989. Written by Warren Samuels, professor of economics at Michigan State University and editor for Kluwer Academic Publishers, the letter reviewed the philosophy behind Kluwer's series on recent economic thought and accordingly expressed interest in the controversies that surround con temporary topics in the discipline. It graciously went on to invite me to organize, consonant with that philosophy, a volume of chapters on saving. Soon thereafter I learned that the chapters were to be original compositions. I also learned that I would have substantial flexibility in structuring the volume and in recruiting contributors, who logically would be authorities in the field. Succinctly, Samuels was inviting me to work with leading scholars in exploring the current controversies in saving, one of my favorite subjects. That invitation was simply too tempting to refuse. Preparation of the book's outline went smoothly. It was obvious that the statistics of saving should be covered along with the theories of saving. It was equally obvious that special issues must be addressed: Ricardian Equivalence, supply-side doctrine, and economic development among others. These themes should be handled so as to bring out the ideological tensions in the profession, and that criterion helped to shape the list of potential contributors. That is, both sides of a conflict should be represented, and both should be given the same treatment.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Poverty, Inequality and Wealth Accumulation in Mexico by : M. Székely
Download or read book The Economics of Poverty, Inequality and Wealth Accumulation in Mexico written by M. Székely and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-21 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to understand why despite a considerable increase in average income in Mexico during the 1984-1992 period of economic liberalization, the conditions of the poorest of the poor deteriorated and income inequality increased. To explain why some individuals were able to take advantage of the opportunities which the economy was generating, while others were prevented from doing so, the author suggests some methodology to extract additional information from poverty and inequality measures, and test the main theories of household saving behaviour.
Book Synopsis Investment Opportunities, Household Savings, and Rates of Return on Investment by : M. Abdullah Shibli
Download or read book Investment Opportunities, Household Savings, and Rates of Return on Investment written by M. Abdullah Shibli and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of technological development on household savings is of central importance to development students and practitioners attempting to devise effective policy for economic growth in general and agricultural capital formation in particular. For the predominantly agricultural economy of Bangladesh, this is an important issue due to the very low rate of growth in the agriculture sector there during the last three decades. This study investigates the relationship between investment opportunities and saving from a theoretical perspective, measures the impact of High Yielding Variety technology on saving in the case of Bangladesh, and compares the rate of return from some common types of investments of rural households in Bangladesh.
