Book excerpt: In 2003, NASA began an R&D effort to develop nuclear power and propulsion systems for solar system exploration. This activity, renamed Project Prometheus in 2004, was initiated because of the inherent limitations in photovoltaic and chemical propulsion systems in reaching many solar system objectives. To help determine appropriate missions for a nuclear power and propulsion capability, NASA asked the NRC for an independent assessment of potentially highly meritorious missions that may be enabled if space nuclear systems became operational. This report provides a series of space science objectives and missions that could be so enabled in the period beyond 2015 in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, solar system exploration, and solar and space physics. It is based on but does not reprioritize the findings of previous NRC decadal surveys in those three areas.

In the vast expanse of space exploration, where the challenges are as numerous as the stars themselves, the role of nuclear power cannot be overstated. This book serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the pivotal role of nuclear technology in powering space missions, addressing the intricate nuances of nuclear cooling systems, space reactors, and propulsion technologies. As humanity ventures further into the cosmos, the demand for reliable and efficient power sources becomes increasingly urgent. Nuclear power stands at the forefront of this quest, offering unparalleled energy densities and longevity essential for extended missions beyond Earth's orbit. However, harnessing nuclear energy in the vacuum of space presents unique challenges and opportunities, which this book endeavors to explore in depth. From the fundamental principles of nuclear reactors to advanced propulsion systems capable of interstellar travel, each chapter delves into specific aspects of nuclear technology relevant to space exploration. We examine the intricacies of cooling systems, the adaptability of nuclear reactors to diverse mission requirements, and the cutting-edge innovations shaping the future of space propulsion. Moreover, safety is paramount in the utilization of nuclear power, particularly in the context of space missions where the stakes are high and the environments harsh. Throughout this book, we emphasize the importance of stringent safety protocols, redundancy measures, and contingency planning to mitigate risks associated with nuclear power in space. Furthermore, this book serves as a testament to the interdisciplinary nature of space exploration. From materials science to artificial intelligence, from propulsion engineering to cybersecurity, the integration of various fields is essential to unlocking the full potential of nuclear technology in space. Whether you are a seasoned aerospace engineer, a budding space enthusiast, or simply curious about the future of space exploration, "Introduction to Nuclear Power in Space: Nuclear Cooling Systems, Space Reactors, and Propulsion Technologies - Book 1" offers a comprehensive and accessible resource. We hope that this book inspires and enlightens readers about the boundless possibilities that nuclear power holds for humanity's journey among the stars.

Book excerpt: Lt Col Downey, USAFR; Wing Cdr Forestier, RAAF; and Lt Col David E. Miller, USAF, advocate a feasibility study for reactors in space and explore a deeper problem with widespread societal rejection concerning the theoretical employment of nuclear technology in space. They point first to the mission enabling advantages of nuclear reactors in space--factors like light weight, high power, long life, and potentially lower costs. They see that nuclear-powered spacecraft would serve long-range NASA missions as well as permit effective hyperspectral satellites that would have profound benefits for the Department of Defense. The limiting factors for nuclear power in space are a compelling mission requirement and broad acceptance in popular support. Many opponents either have general doubts about such an undertaking or perceive cataclysmic dangers. A failure of a space launch carrying nuclear systems would produce something on the order of a 'dirty' nuclear bomb. Two things were clear to the authors. One, nuclear space developers must convince the public that they are capable of developing a safe and robust system. Two, because the political battle is primarily over perceived risks rather than empirically based understanding, employment of a values-focused decision strategy is necessary to convince the public and congressional leaders of the feasibility of a space nuclear program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spacecraft require electrical energy. This energy must be available in the outer reaches of the solar system where sunlight is very faint. It must be available through lunar nights that last for 14 days, through long periods of dark and cold at the higher latitudes on Mars, and in high-radiation fields such as those around Jupiter. Radioisotope power systems (RPSs) are the only available power source that can operate unconstrained in these environments for the long periods of time needed to accomplish many missions, and plutonium-238 (238Pu) is the only practical isotope for fueling them. Plutonium-238 does not occur in nature. The committee does not believe that there is any additional 238Pu (or any operational 238Pu production facilities) available anywhere in the world. The total amount of 238Pu available for NASA is fixed, and essentially all of it is already dedicated to support several pending missions-the Mars Science Laboratory, Discovery 12, the Outer Planets Flagship 1 (OPF 1), and (perhaps) a small number of additional missions with a very small demand for 238Pu. If the status quo persists, the United States will not be able to provide RPSs for any subsequent missions.

Book excerpt: John Simpson, former president of Westinghouse Power Systems Company and past president of the American Nuclear Society, provides a vibrant account of the events associated with the birth of the nuclear industry. Simpson's account of his career and the many turns it took is formidable. Sixteen chapters provide the reader with a historical perspective portrayed by a person whose role, energy, and contributions to the development of fission power are significant. Simpson takes you through the building and operation of the first submarine, nuclear propulsion units, Shippingport, the astronuclear years, and early commercial power. Written largely in narrative and anecdotal form, the technical story is also provided. The final chapter provides a summary and the author's thought-provoking view of the future of nuclear power.
