Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Multinational Corporations in Political Environments" advances and tests a theory of why foreign corporations leave host states. Theories of international business have often ignored the complexity of corporate decisions about leaving foreign countries, generally assuming that the economic and competitive reasons that prompt multinational corporations to enter host states also explain their subsequent reasons for leaving. Alternatively, this book proposes a theory of how different stakeholdersOCO values and ethics shape multinationalsOCO strategic leaving behaviors. Tested in South Africa when US multinationals were facing diverse pressures from stockholders, governments and consumers to leave, the research provides a prism to isolate how different stakeholdersOCO actions influenced multinationalsOCO behaviors."

Book excerpt: Companies have quickly latched onto the rhetoric of 'Renaissance', presenting their economic endeavours in a modernisation frame that they claim is in harmony with the objectives of the new regionalism and the new 'Renaissance'. [...] The key objective in this paper is to discuss what the new South African investment means for the workers at these firms. [...] What dispositions and forms of claim-making prevail amongst waged workers at these foreign, South African multinational corporations? The aim here is to understand how workers at these firms see the role of South African companies in Zambia, and what they perceive as their place within these companies both in terms of problems and opportunities. [...] This paper seeks to show how, in the wake of growing disillusionment with their national governments, workers at foreign, South African firms focus their claims at the level of the Southern African region. [...] While not the only factors affecting the regional perceptions of workers, forms of workplace organisation of South African companies have important consequences for the regional dispositions and claims of workers at these firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Saville (1993), the economic growth of less developed countries is impeded due to the presence of four gaps' in these economies. However, Saville (1993), states that, by filling these gaps, developing economies are able to achieve economic growth and development. The main objective of this research is to update the study of Saville (1993) in order to determine the impact of the multinational corporation on the host economy in reference to the drivers of exogenous and endogenous growth in contribution to filling these gaps. This is a quantitative study which makes use of secondary data obtained from JSE listed firms operating in the mining sector in South Africa. Statistical regression analysis was conducted and results are compared to the previous Saville (1993) study. In summary, the results of the study are mixed however in terms of informing government policy, this study confirms the importance of FDI in emerging markets. The caveat however, firstly, is to inform policy to attract the right kinds of FDI to contribute to filling specific gaps in to achieve the required economic growth. Secondly, policy should require collaboration between MNC's, private firms as well as public sector firms in order to share knowledge and profits in having a positive effect on social welfare and economic growth in the domestic economy.

This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Africa, the world’s most lagging region, benefit from globalisation and achieve sustained economic growth? Africa needs greater investment by Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to improve competitiveness and generate more growth through positive spill-over effects. Despite the fact that Africa’s returns on investment averaged 29% since 1990, Africa has gained merely 1% of global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows. The challenge for African countries is how to be a more desirable destination for FDI. The study integrates three currents of economic research, namely from the literature on (endogenous) economic growth, convergence and regional integration, the explanations for Africa’s poor growth and the growing understanding of the role of MNEs in a global economy. The empirical side of the book is based on an econometric study of the determinants of FDI in Africa as well as a detailed firm-level survey conducted in 2000.

Book Synopsis Politics and Power in the Multinational Corporation by : Christoph Dörrenbächer
Download or read book Politics and Power in the Multinational Corporation written by Christoph Dörrenbächer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2011. The current financial and economic crisis has negatively underlined the vital role of multinational companies (MNCs) in our daily lives. The breakdown and crisis of flagship MNCs, such as Enron, WorldCom, Lehman Brothers, Toyota and General Motors, does not merely reveal the problems of corporate malfeasance and market dysfunction. It also raises important questions, both for the public and the academic community, about the use and misuse of power by MNCs in the wider society, as well as the exercise of power by key actors within internationally operating firms. This book examines how issues of power and politics affect MNCs at three different levels; the macro-level, the meso-level and the micro-level. This wide-ranging analysis shows not only that power matters but also how and why it matters, pointing to the political interactions of key power holders and actors within the MNC, both managers and employees.
