Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of family influence, hopeful career state, and human agency on career decision self-efficacy among Asian international students in the United States. A sample of 206 Asian international students across 17 countries and regions was recruited and used for further data analysis. They have completed the demographic form, family influence scale, assessment of human agency, hopeful career state, acculturation index, and career decision self-efficacy short form via an online platform, Qualtrics. This study used preliminary analysis, descriptive analysis, FIS confirmatory factor analysis, and two-step structural equation modeling to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses. The results indicated that family financial support was a significant predictor of career decision self-efficacy. Hopeful career state mediated the indirect effects between family influence on career decision self-efficacy among Asian international students. The results of the alternative model analysis supported that hopeful career state weakly mediated the relationship between family financial support and career decision self-efficacy. Hopeful career state mediated the positive relationship between human agency and career decision self-efficacy. The effect of human agency was stronger than the effect of family financial support on career decision self-efficacy via hopeful career state. The strengths and limitations of the study were discussed. The implication for practice and recommendations for future research were provided.

Thus, studying the career needs of international students within the context of work in the 21st century has implications for career counseling. A critical factor in career counseling is career decision-making. Career decision-making difficulties have been linked to tolerance of ambiguity, or how people react to ambiguous situations. However, the association between these variables has not been replicated in international student populations. When examining international students who transition cross-culturally, it is essential to consider the influence of cultural orientation (i.e., collectivist or individualist) on their career decisions. In this study, I explored if cultural orientation moderates the relationship between ambiguity tolerance and career decision-making difficulties among international students. I recruited 162 undergraduate and graduate international student participants in the U.S. I used three separate measures to assess career decision-making difficulties, tolerance of ambiguity, and cultural orientation at one point in time. I found evidence that tolerance of ambiguity is significantly, negatively associated with career decision-making difficulties. Individualistic, but not collectivistic cultural orientation, moderated the relationship between tolerance of ambiguity and career decision-making difficulties. These findings allow for a better understanding of the cultural factors influencing international students' career concerns.

Book excerpt: Based on census data, Asian Americans are overrepresented in some occupations (e.g. science, professional, and technology) while being underrepresented in others (e.g., production, entertaining, social and humanistic field). Recent scholarship shows that vocational interests are less related to Asian American0́9s career choice. Asian American might choose their career based on their family0́9s mission rather on their own interests, which may lead to occupational incongruence. Family influence on Asian Americans0́9 career development and career choice has been less studied, despite acknowledgements of its importance. What are good indicators for family influence and how these indicators separately (or as a whole) impact Asian Americans are still unclear. Based on literatures, three cultural specific indicators (intergeneration conflict, family obligation, and perceived opportunities) were chosen for further examination. The purpose of the present study was to provide empirical evidence on how these three variables impact Asian American young adults0́9 career choice and occupational congruence. The present study was also aimed at examining the current pattern of occupational segregation among Asian Americans. 249 Asian Americans completed a questionnaire regarding their career choice and family influence. The results indicated that intergenerational conflicts and perceived opportunity was negatively associated with interest-choice congruence, and they functioned as a barrier to career choice. Family obligation, instead, functioned as a positive contributing factor to interest-choice congruence. In addition, participants0́9 reported majors and preferred occupations were coded into RIASEC categories. The patterns of selected majors and preferred occupations reflected occupational segregation. Interest-choice congruence was significantly higher in atypically represented majors (Artistic, Social major) than in traditionally over represented majors (Realistic, Investigative, and Enterprising major). These findings provided evidence for Relative Functionalism proposed by Sue and Okazaki (1990). Finally, significant results were found for congruence and its correlation with family variables across acculturation, generation status, RIASEC major/occupation, gender, and parents0́9 education. The meaning of these research findings to occupational segregation and other considerations were discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among first year Malaysian undergraduate students at the University of Malaya during the 2005/2006 academic session. The study also examined the relative contributions of family functioning to the prediction of career decision-making self-efficacy. Finally, the study investigated whether there are differences in family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among students by gender, ethnicity, and academic majors. A final sample consisting of 925 participants was selected through a modified, stratified random sampling. The instruments used in the study are a demographic information sheet, the Malay Version of the Family Assessment Device (FAD), and the Malay version of the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale Short-Form (CDSE-SF). Pearson product-moment correlation was used to assess the degree of relationship between family functioning subscales (i.e., problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, and general functioning) and career decision-making self-efficacy subscales (i.e., self-appraisal, occupational information, goal selection, career planning, and problem solving). Simultaneous multiple regression analysis was used to assess the relative effects of family functioning subscales on career decision-making self-efficacy. Two-Way Analyses of Variance were used to determine differences in family functioning and career decision-making self-efficacy among students by gender, academic major, and ethnicity. The findings of the study show that the relationships between family functioning subscales and career decision-making self-efficacy subscales were between small and moderate. The study also found that each family functioning subscale contributed less than 15% of the variance in career decision-making self-efficacy. The total variance accounted for by the six family functioning subscales was small (32%). Important findings of the analyses of variances include: (a) male students perceived their families as more dysfunctional than female students; (b) Chinese students perceived their families as more dysfunctional than Malay and Indian students; (c) students in science majors perceived their families as more dysfunctional than students in art and social science majors; (d) there were significant interaction effects between gender and ethnicity on career decision-making self-efficacy; and (e) there were significant interaction effects between academic major and ethnicity on career decision-making self-efficacy.

Despite the growing literature examining family support and gender influences on the career decision-making self-efficacy of college students in western countries such as the U.S. and Europe, little research has been conducted with non-western countries such as Kenya. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between career decision-making self-efficacy and family support factors of Moi University students. The career decision-making self-efficacy scale short-form (CDMSES-SF; Betz, Klein, & Taylor, 1996) measured career decision-making self-efficacy, and family support factors were measured by the family influence scale (FIS; Fouad et al., 2010). Students reported high CDMSE, but gender did not significanty predict students' CDMSE. Out of the four family support factors, only informational support and financial support significantly predicted students' CDMSE. Moreover, there was no statistically significant relationship on the interaction between gender and informational support and gender and financial support. These findings indicate the important role that family support plays in the CDMSE of their children.

Two key career constructs, namely vocational interests and choice goals (i.e., aspirations and expectations), were included to assess the career-related self-concept. The incongruence between aspirations and expectations, in terms of interest types, occupational status and gender-typicality, was also estimated. The six major goals of this study include: (1) to determine to what extent the choice model of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) is applicable to Hong Kong students, (2) to expand the SCCT by examining how individual (i.e., career decision-making self-efficacy, personality and gender-related variables) and contextual variables (i.e., parental influences) may account for the aspirations and expectations as well as the aspiration-expectation incongruence, (3) to identify the value of culture-relevant, relationship-oriented personality dimension beyond the culture-general dimensions in explaining interests and aspiration-expectation incongruence, (4) to estimate the specific roles of paternal and maternal influences, including parental socio-economic variables, collective contributions to career efficacy, perceived parental expectation and parental support, in the development of aspiration-expectation incongruence, (5) to explore the parents' perceived expectation on their child's academic achievement and career choices, as well as their efficacy in assisting their child's career decision-making, and (6) to investigate the differential effects of gender and gender-related variables (i.e., gender role traditional attitudes) on the development of aspiration-expectation incongruence among boys and girls. A total of 1382 secondary school students and a sub-sample of 114 parent-child dyads were used in this study. Results from structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that the choice model of SCCT was applicable to Hong Kong students. In addition, both culture-general and culture-specific personality factors were useful in explaining vocational interests and self-efficacy in interest types in the SCCT models. In relation to students' aspirations, expectations and aspiration-expectation incongruence, these factors were directly associated with career decision-making self-efficacy, parental socio-economic variables and gender role attitudes. Perceived parental influences from mother (i.e., collective contributions to career efficacy, perceived parental expectation and parental support) were directly associated with students' career decision-making self-efficacy and indirectly related to outcomes of aspirations and expectations (via career decision-making self-efficacy). The effects of perceived parental influences from father on career variables were insignificant in general. Most personality factors were predictive of career decision-making self-efficacy. Furthermore, Interpersonal Relatedness was related to perceived parental influences from both parents. Gender differences in interests, self-efficacy, gender role attitudes, and gender-typicality in aspiration-expectation incongruence were observed. As demonstrated in the parent-child dyads, there was a good degree of concordance in interest types and gender-typicality between parents' expectation and students' choice goals. Parents' efficacy in assisting child's career decision-making was positively associated with students' perceived career-related parental support. On a theoretical level, this study expanded the current western-based theoretical frameworks by incorporating individual, contextual and cultural variables relevant to the Chinese culture into the existing career models. On an applied level, the findings would inform researchers, practitioners and educators about the career development of secondary school students in Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: To varying degrees psychologists have emphasized the influence of interpersonal relationships on the career decision making process, including parental psychological separation and attachment orientation. Models of the career development process, psychological separation and attachment orientation have been criticized as being based on Western, masculine values, which have been applied to women and racial minorities without appropriate consideration of cultural factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate career indecision from a relational and cross-cultural perspective by examining the role of parental psychological separation and attachment orientation in influencing the level of career indecision between White and Asian American undergraduate students. Based on the literature, four hypotheses and two research questions were examined using data completed by 302 White and Asian American undergraduates. Hypothesis one was only partially supported as White Americans demonstrated greater levels of maternal conflictual independence (a dimension of psychological separation) compared to Asia Americans; no cultural differences on ratings of paternal conflictual independence were found. Findings offered no support for hypothesis two predicting cultural and sex differences on rating of attachment anxiety and avoidance. Hypothesis three was partially supported as levels of career indecision within cultural groups were similar for men and women; however, counter to predictions, White Americans and Asian Americans showed similar levels of career decidedness. Partial support was also offered for hypothesis four as low levels of career indecision for White Americans were predicted by high levels of maternal conflictual independence; however, paternal conflictual independence and adult attachment avoidance and anxiety failed to account for significant unique variance. The findings of research question one suggested that for Asian Americans lower levels of career indecision were predicted by high levels of maternal conflictual independence and low levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance. The second research question examining potential cultural and sex differences in the prediction of career indecision indicated no significant differences between and within cultural and sex groups. These findings and their relation to the current literature were discussed, as were the limitations of the study, directions for future research and the implications for the practice of counseling psychology.

Book excerpt: This study examines Asian American practitioners' career motivations, identity-related experiences, and their general perceptions of the public relations industry. Social identity theory serves as the theoretical background of the study, as identity is the core element in understanding practitioners' working experiences in public relations. A qualitative, in-depth interview method was adopted by the current study. A total of 19 Asian American public relations practitioners were email-interviewed. The study has numerous findings based on the research questions and the emerging themes. In examining why practitioners entered the field of public relations, the study showed that personal interests, industrial attraction, and family influence are key issues in career motivations for practitioners. In examining practitioners' identities, differences exist between Asians and Asian Americans, and between Asians of different nationalities, although practitioners generally agreed being identified as "Asian Americans". Their identities had no direct effects on their daily work in public relations; however, subtle challenges and benefits were detected. Challenges facing practitioners were mostly based on stereotypical mindsets, including stereotypes in physical appearance, personality, language and culture. Benefits of being an Asian American in the public relations field included language and cultural advantage, contribution to diversity in the workplace, accessibility to minority organizations, and Asian American unique personal traits. Finally, the study found practitioners' perceptions of Asian American in public relations were concentrated in the following areas: lacking Asian Americans in the public relations industry, wide opportunities for a career in public relations, professional skills for success in public relations, and increasing Asian American presence in public relations. The current study extends the literature on Asian American public relations practitioners, brings awareness to the subgroup of Asian Americans, and contributes to enhance the presence of Asian Americans to the public relations industry. Strategies of increasing Asian American public relations practitioners are also provided based on participants' recommendations.
