Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of social support, hardiness and acculturation as predictors of mental health among international students of Asian Indian origin enrolled at two large Public Universities in Ohio. A sample of 185 students of Asian Indian origin enrolled in two large Midwestern universities in Ohio completed a 75 items long valid and reliable online survey assessing their social support levels, acculturation, hardiness and their mental health. Regression analyses were run to test for variance in mental health attributable to each of the three independent variables. The final regression model revealed that belonging aspect of social support, perceived prejudice aspect of acculturation and commitment and control aspects of hardiness were all predictive of mental health (R 2= 0.523). Recommendations have been offered to develop interventions that will help develop the social support, hardiness and acculturation of international students and help improve their mental health. Recommendations have also been offered regarding the development of future web based studies in this field.

Book excerpt: Social support has been found to contribute to an overall positive adjustment for International students in U.S. colleges. This study addressed the relationship between International students' perceptions of university assistance in adjusting to campus life and their social adjustment levels. Questionnaires were divided into two sections: 1) university helpfulness in connecting with others - collegiate personnel and students - in the campus community and through the various campus events offered; and 2) assessing social adjustment through The Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ). The questionnaire was distributed to undergraduate students attending a private Midwestern university with 62 usable responses gathered from 31 American and 31 International students representing eight international countries. The university had 68 undergraduate International students and 45.4% participated in the current study. Statistical analyses revealed that Americans were more socially adjusted to university life when compared with International students (p.001). The data also disclosed that there was no relationship between level of adjustment to campus life and student perception of being respected by peers and faculty (p.05). However, International students with relatively lower social adjustment were observed as more likely to perceive campus activities as less useful than their more well-adjusted International peers, though no significance was found (p>.05). All the International students reported being treated well by faculty and students, yet improvements were suggested for social events to include opportunities for multicultural relations. Implications of this study suggest that well-developed campus events that connect International and American students could have a positive impact on social adjustment for International students.

Book excerpt: Abstract: One out of every three first-year college students will not return for a second year of college (Postsecondary Education Opportunity, 2010). Due to a variety of factors, minority students are at an even higher risk of dropping out of college. Rural youth, comprising approximately 22% of the nation's total youth, form a significant minority population; yet the rural student experience in college has not yet been widely considered in research. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore college adjustment and its predictors among first-year students, with an emphasis on the role of rurality in college adjustment. Social self-efficacy, social support, social investment at college, psychological help-seeking attitudes, and well-being were explored as potential predictors of adjustment. Participants were 240 first-year students at a large Midwestern university, who completed a questionnaire. Results indicated that rural and urban students did not report significant differences in the extent of their adjustment to college; yet, the predictors of adjustment were slightly different between groups (i.e., rural and urban students may have different paths to adjustment at college). Social support was an indirect and direct predictor of adjustment for rural students, but only operated as an indirect predictor of adjustment for urban students. Thus it may be that the social support perceived by rural students is somehow qualitatively different than support perceived by urban students, which may provide evidence for the idea of divergent rural/urban cultures. Bolstering this claim is the finding that rural students reported less positive help-seeking attitudes and higher senses of well-being than did urban students. Also of note is that well-being was found to mediate the relationship between social self-efficacy and adjustment, and between social support and adjustment, across groups. Based on the results of this study, various theoretical and practical applications, including potential interventions for first-year college students, are considered and discussed.

Book excerpt: Previous studies on college counseling have shown that international student clients (ISC) have higher baseline psychological distress and benefit less from individual psychotherapy in a university counseling center (UCC) setting compared to domestic student clients (DSC). International students face various practical challenges in adjusting to life in a foreign country, and social support plays a crucial role in their adjustments and psychological well-being. Social support is shown to be a transdiagnostic and transtheoretical client-level predictor of psychotherapy outcome (Constantino et al., 2021). This study aimed to replicate the baseline distress and treatment outcome differences between ISCs and DSCs, and examine whether and how perceived social support contribute to this difference. The study used data collected from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health Practice Research Network (CCMH PRN) which involves 34,090 clients treated by 1,887 therapists in 94 UCCs between 2017-2019, including 1,692 ISCs from 127 countries and regions. Analyses of variance and covariance were conducted to explore our research questions, and we used matching methods to address the demographic imbalance within this dataset and conducted the same analyses. ISCs reported higher pre-treatment distress as well as lower social network support than DSCs, but there was no difference in post-treatment distress. Social support was shown to be positively related with better treatment outcome. We also discovered nuanced differences in results using the demographically matched dataset. Implications for clinical practice and future research will be discussed.

Rationale: Research suggests acculturation stress may be a contributing factor to chronic health problems such as obesity, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Numerous studies have explored the effects of general stress on mental and physical health, but less is known about the cumulative effect of acculturative stress on the body's physiologic processes, referred to as allostatic load. Previous studies have indicated that factors such as cumulative exposure to chronic stress, age of arrival, and time living in the United States all contribute to higher levels of allostatic load in new immigrants. There is strong evidence of the stress-buffering effects of social support specifically regarding acculturative stress. However, to date little is known about the effects of social support on acculturative stress and allostatic load. Methods: A sample of 73 first- and second-generation immigrant undergraduate college students were recruited from Saint Peter's University, an ethnically diverse college in Jersey City. Independent variables were measures of acculturative stress, level of acculturation, perceived social support, and perceived general stress. Blood biomarkers were collected and analyzed to calculate a composite score index as a measure of allostatic load as the dependent variable. Results: Acculturation stress was lower among individuals who indicated their level of acculturation as being either assimilation or integration. Although the results of the regression with acculturative stress as the predictor of total allostatic load was not significant, acculturative stress significantly predicted systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Friends' social support and acculturative stress did significantly predict allostatic load, with higher levels of social support decreasing allostatic load. Conclusions: There is increasing evidence that immigrant students who are marginalized may experience higher levels of acculturative stress compared to those who are more integrated. The results of this study add to previous findings that higher social support is associated with lower allostatic load. Future research using longitudinal designs is necessary to examine health behaviors relating to immigration and their influence on allostatic load.

Given that psychosocial factors predict adaptive coping and adjustment in the presence of transition stressors, this study examined the efficacy of mindfulness and social support trainings in fostering psychosocial skills and adjustment among college freshmen. Fifty Western Washington University first-year students (75.7% white, 13.5% Hispanic or Latinx, 12.2% Asian, 4.1% Black, 1.4% Native American or Alaska Native, and 9.5% multiracial) participated. Students were randomly assigned to one of the two trainings and were measured pre- and post- training on psychosocial skills (mindfulness, social support, emotion regulation) and indicators of adjustment (psychological distress, perceived stress). Neither training group showed significant changes regarding psychosocial skills, psychological distress, or perceived stress. These null findings showcase important considerations when designing trainings to improve psychosocial skills in hopes of promoting positive adjustment for first-year college students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between perceived social support and well-being among international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions. Both the direct relationship between perceived social support and well-being and the indirect relationship through mediators (i.e., hopeful career state, career engagement) were examined among 410 international students across the United States. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized relationships. Results revealed that perceived social support directly contributed to international students' well-being. Results also showed that hopeful career state partially mediated the relationship between perceived social support and well-being, suggesting that international students with higher levels of social support were hopeful about their career futures, which then increased their levels of well-being. Similarly, results showed that career engagement also partially mediated the relationship between perceived social support and well-being, suggesting that international students with more social support had greater engagement in proactive career activities, which then contributed to their well-being. Lastly, results also showed a serial mediating effect of hopeful career state and career engagement on the relationship between perceived social support and well-being, suggesting that international students who had higher levels of social support were more hopeful about their career futures, which promoted greater engagement in proactive career activities, which then increased their levels of well-being. Findings of the study highlighted the important role that social support plays in international students' well-being, as well as provided empirical evidence for career development (i.e., hopeful career state, career engagement) as mechanisms through which social support contributes to international students' well-being. Implications for higher education practitioners (e.g., mental health and career counselors, student affairs professionals), counselor educators, and researchers are discussed.

Book excerpt: The rise in international student enrollment in the United States and the goal of creating multicultural campuses has prompted the need to further the study of cross-cultural adaptation. This study investigates the influence of social support networks in the adaptation process of international students through a relational regulation perspective (Lakey & Orehek, 2011). International students from two southwestern universities were surveyed. Data was analyzed using regression analysis. In contrast to past literature (Bochner, McLeod, & Lin, 1977; Furnham & Alibhai, 1985), commonly using a stress-buffering approach, perceived balance social support did not predict acculturative stress. Furthermore, there was a correlation between the strength of the conational friend network and acculturative stress for students that have been in the United States the longest. However, these students had a lower overall conational friend network on average. Results of this study suggest the conational network is also important for the final stages of adaptation. Finally, the collectivism/individualism worldview dimension was important when analyzing the preferred social support network of students as collectivism influenced the strength of the conational friend and American friend social support networks. However, individualism did not significantly influence the strength of any social support network. Additionally, collectivism was also related to higher levels of acculturative stress. Overall, this study reinforces Kim and Ruben's (1987) Stress-Adaptation-Growth Model as stress and growth are seen as integrated in the adaptation process. The fact that a balanced social support networks did not indicate a variation in acculturative stress does not mean participants will not adapt to the new environment, as stress is a major component during the acculturation process. This study raises the need to study international student's social support networks through a relational regulation perspective. Using this approach will also serve to analyze the role of each social support network through time.

Book excerpt: The gap between college student enrollment and graduation rates remains a problem for college students and administrators. Literature on persistence in college suggests that factors such as hardiness and autonomy support may contribute to student perseverance through degree attainment. The current study focused on these constructs using a framework based on self-determination theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 1985). Factors related to student persistence, namely hardiness and autonomy support, were expected to positively predict college student engagement. Furthermore, hardiness was expected to moderate the relationship between autonomy support and college student engagement. College students from a university and a community college (N = 184) participated in a survey on their perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, and experiences related to the college environment. Hypotheses were tested using a hierarchical multiple regression model. Both autonomy support and hardiness positively predicted college student engagement, but the interaction effect of hardiness was nonsignificant. These results inform the literature on SDT, the validity of hardiness, and are applicable to programs and interventions aimed at improving college students’ persistence in academic goal pursuit.
