Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the formation of the Korean economic system, this book presents a fascinating and comprehensive analysis of economic development outside of the traditional neo-classical, developmental-state and dependency perspectives. It examines in detail the evolution of institutions that contributed to economic growth and the formation and the workings of the economic system. With an emphasis on the interaction between government, private institutions (Chaebol and financial institutions) and the influence of Japan, it offers one of the most stimulating and distinctive views of Korean economic development to date. It will be of key interest to scholars and researchers of financial growth and development, Asian finance, and regional and heterodox economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, Korea’s financial development has been a tale of liberalization and opening. After the 1997 financial crisis, great strides were made in building a market-oriented financial system through sweeping reforms for deregulation and the opening of financial markets. However, the new system failed to steer the country away from a credit card boom and bust in 2003, a liquidity crisis in 2008, and a run on its savings banks in 2011, and has been severely tested again by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Financial liberalization, clearly, has been no panacea. This study analyzes the deepening of and structural changes in Korea’s financial system since the early 1980s and presents the empirical results of the effects of financial development on economic growth, stability, and the distribution of income. It finds that, contrary to conventional wisdom, financial liberalization has contributed little to fostering the growth and stability of the Korean economy and has exacerbated income distribution problems. Are there any merits in financial liberalization? The authors answer this query through empirical examinations of the theories of finance and growth. They point to a clear need to further improve the efficiency, soundness, and stability of Korean financial institutions and markets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean economy has achieved outstanding development not only in its real economy but also in the financial sector. Driven by the expansion in economic size and by the government’s policies to foster the capital markets and increase their openness, the Korean financial market has grown by more than 17 times over the past two decades since the 1990s. Financial market quality has also been greatly enhanced due to efforts to develop the financial infrastructure and improve the transaction techniques. As a result, global interest in the Korean financial market has increased significantly. In reflection of this upgraded international standing of the Korean financial market, the Bank of Korea now publishes this English edition of ?Financial Markets in Korea? for the first time. Initially published in 1999, this book has been revised every two to three years. This English edition is published along with the 2012 revision. Although its arrival is somewhat late, we hope that it will serve readers as a solid introduction to the overall Korean financial market. This book provides an overview of the Korean financial market structure, and of recent developments related to the individual markets. Chapter 1 introduces the structure and size of the financial market as a whole, while Chapters 2 through 4 describe the funding, capital and financial derivatives markets respectively, covering their trading terms and conditions, participants, transaction mechanisms and recent developments. Detailed explanations of recent major issues concerning the financial markets, including notable developments and institutional changes, are also available in the Boxes included throughout the text. It is hoped that this book will provide readers good guidance for a better understanding of Korea’s financial markets. Money markets Ⅰ. Overview Ⅱ. Call market Ⅲ. Repurchase agreement (RP) market Ⅳ. Book excerpt: This volume connects the evolving modern financial systems of China, Japan, and Korea to the development and growth of their economies through the first decade of the twenty-first century. It also identifies the commonalities among all three systems while taking into account their social, political, and institutional differences. Essays consider the reform of the Chinese economy since 1978, the underwhelming performance of the Japanese economy since about 1990, and the growth of the Korean economy over the past three decades. These economies engaged in rapid catch-up growth processes and share similar economic structures. While domestic forces have driven each country’s financial trajectory, international short-term financial flows have presented opportunities and challenges for all. For these countries, the nature and role of the financial system in generating real economic growth is integral, though nuanced and complex. The result is a fascinating spectrum of experiences with powerful takeaways.
