Book excerpt: Limited research attention has been given to the impact of main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization on social behaviors such as aggression and group entry behavior, which have been found to be important indices of social competence. The primary goals of this investigation were to examine whether main or interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization predicted: (1) initiation and receipt of aggression, (2) responses to aggression, (3) group entry strategies, and (4) group entry outcomes, within the naturalistic setting of the school playground. The current study examined 127 male and female, multi-ethnic children, between the ages of five to seven. Half of the sample experienced at least one episode of parental maltreatment (i.e., physical abuse and/or neglect), as determined by a substantiated report of child maltreatment. The other half of the sample included comparison children recruited from neighborhoods where the majority of the maltreated sample lived. Severity of peer victimization was assessed using the Victimization Scale. All children were unobtrusively observed for approximately 80 minutes on four specific behavioral styles and outcomes: (1) the initiation and receipt of aggression (i.e., bullying, instrumental, and reactive); (2) responses to aggression (i.e., resist, dependent, submit, constructive, ignore/avoid, and no responses); (3) group entry strategies (i.e., attention-getting, disruptive, self-referent, mimic, wait-and-hover, and person-group); and (4) group entry outcomes (i.e., successful, ignored, rejected, and interrupted). Main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization were hypothesized to predict these four groups of behavioral styles and outcomes. Hierarchical linear regression models did not reveal any main effects of maltreatment or peer victimization on the proposed behavioral styles or outcomes. However, there was a statistically significant maltreatment-peer victimization interaction for both resist responses (p = .03) and not responding to aggression (p = .01). Also, the maltreatment-peer victimization interaction approached significance for the receipt of reactive aggression (p = .06). Main and interaction effects of maltreatment and peer victimization were not predictive of group entry strategies or group entry outcomes. This study contributes to current understanding of behavioral styles of maltreated and peer victimized children in early elementary school that may place them at-risk for social adjustment difficulties.

Researchers have identified child and classroom characteristics that are associated with the experience of peer victimization; however, research examining factors that predict victimization status over time is lacking. Theoretical models suggest that the duration of victimization may have an effect on the child's level of maladjustment. The goal of this study was to examine the extent to which child characteristics (hyperactivity/impulsivity severity, age, gender, friendships, social acceptance/rejection, and perceptions of support), classroom context characteristics (classroom-levels of hyperactivity/impulsivity severity, social acceptance/rejection, and perceived support, and teacher use of reviewing and reinforcing inclusive behaviors), or their combination and interaction predict a child's peer victimization status over time. Participants were 556 children in K-5th grade within 34 classrooms and their teachers. Peer victimization was assessed via self-report in the fall and spring. Other predictors were assessed in the fall, and teachers' use of classroom strategies were assessed via observation throughout the year. A latent transition analysis produced victimization stability groups (i.e., stable non-victim, stable victim, increasing victimization, decreasing victimization). Multilevel logistic models (MLM) with child variables (level-1) nested within classroom variables (level-2) were used to examine the relationship between these variables and victimization stability status. Results indicated that several child characteristics (hyperactivity/impulsivity symptom severity [OR = 1.8], peer-liking [OR = 0.6], perceptions of personal support from teacher [OR = 0.7], and negative nominations [OR = 11.8]) and two classroom characteristics (classroom level of negative nominations [OR = 172.7] and classroom-level of teacher personal support [OR = 0.3]) predicted victimization stability. Implications for intervention development and child identification are discussed.

The current study extended previous research by examining how time spent with two types of peers (externalizing and socially competent) can serve as a risk or protective factor for preschoolers' victimization, and how victimization may differ for boys and girls. In addition, the study explored how affiliating with same-sex and other-sex externalizing and socially competent peers may differentially relate to victimization. Results showed that girls who affiliated with externalizing female peers were significantly more at risk for victimization. In addition, boys and girls who spent time with socially competent male peers (but not female peers) negatively predicted victimization. The results indicate that children's peers, in certain circumstances, may play an important role in victimization. These findings also highlight the importance of considering children's and peers' gender when studying peer processes.

Book excerpt: This study utilized longitudinal correlational and regression analyses to examine children's internalizing behaviour problems, while focusing on the predictive function of peer victimization, the quality of the teacher-child relationship and child gender in early school years. Given the relationship between peer victimization and internalizing problems, the teacher-child relationship and gender was hypothesized to influence the strength and/or direction of this relationship. Participants included children in pre-kindergarten (n = 258) to grade one (n = 272) from twelve schools in an Australian city. Parent reports were used to assess child internalizing problems and peer victimization, and teachers reported on the teacher-child relationship and peer victimization. A significant main effect was found for child gender and kindergarten teacher-child conflict on internalizing behaviours in grade one, whereas no main effect was found for grade one internalizing behaviours for parent-rated peer victimization and teacher-child warmth. The quality of the teacher-child relationship was not found to moderate the relationship between peer victimization and internalizing problems, while child gender did moderate the influence of teacher-child relationship conflict on internalizing problems a year later. The results of the present study indicated that the relationship between teacher-child conflict and internalizing problems a year later differs for boys and girls. The importance of specific microsystems (i.e., teacher-child relationships) over time on children's behavioural development is discussed, and implications for future research and teacher-child interventions are presented.

These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. Recently, there is an increased interest in understanding the mechanisms by which maltreatment effects the development of problematic social relationships. According to attachment and social learning theories, children develop internal working models of relationships, or relational schema, based on early childhood experiences. When early interpersonal experiences include significant disruptions in the parent-child relationship as evident in cases of child maltreatment, it is hypothesized that the effects of the abuse will persist into future relationships mediated through the development of maladaptive relational schema. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between maltreatment, relational schema, and psychosocial adjustment in children. The study had three goals: (1) to examine the utility of the Narrative Story-Stem Completion Task (NSCT) as a standardized measure of relational schema for young children; (2) to examine group differences in relational schema in maltreated and comparison children; and (3) to examine the role of relational schema in mediating the link between maltreatment and psychosocial adjustment. Thirty maltreated (19 females, 11 males) and fifty-one comparison children (21 females, 30 males) were recruited. Children completed the NSCT while parents completed the CBCL. Stories were transcribed and coded for different relationship themes. Results of the present study indicate (1) the NSCT is a promising measure of relational schema in young children. There were significant correlations among story themes across relationship domains suggesting some generalization of schema models across relationships. Additionally, expectations of support from adults, empathy for others, and positive aspects of relationships were significantly negatively correlated with externalizing behavior problems while positive aspects of relationships were significantly negatively correlated with internalizing behavior problems suggesting some relationship between schema and psychosocial adjustment. (2) Within the unfamiliar peer domain, maltreated girls demonstrated significantly more negative relationship themes, fewer positive relationship themes and lower expectations of acceptance from peers. There were no significant group differences in relational schema within the attachment figure and best friend domains. Implications of these findings were discussed.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the association between peer relationships and externalizing behavior in a sample of high-risk youth during the transition to adolescence. The present sample included youth and their caregivers who participated in a multisite prospective study of youth at risk for maltreatment. Data regarding peer relationships and externalizing behavior were assessed at ages 12, 14, and 16. Maltreatment data were abstracted and coded from official records. A cross-lagged panel mediation model evaluated whether or not peer relationships at age 14 mediated the association between child maltreatment (i.e. prior to age 12) and subsequent externalizing behavior at age 16. Although a mediational model was not supported, individual pathways revealed significant relationships between maltreatment, peer relationships, and externalizing behavior during the transition to adolescence. Findings suggest that recent, ongoing maltreatment is a risk factor for later problem behavior, and that youth involved with negative peers are at risk for subsequent victimization. Intervention opportunities and future directions are discussed.
