Book excerpt: The Socialists take from the Rich and give to the Poor and the Elites become the Masters of our Universe. The Elites are usually very charismatic and successfully influence the masses by giving good speeches. They seduce our children into believing there is no God, that there is no right or wrong, and that everything is grey. In this political environment, our children do not question President Obamas ties to William Ayers of the terrorist group, the Weather Underground, whom he describes as a mentor; or his vote for Abortion-on-Demand, which was far to the Left of Hillary Clinton. Nor do they challenge the negative attacks on Michelle Bachman who raised 23 foster children and yet is described as a bad person. Together, we are on a path to godlessness if no one stops the Elites from demeaning Christian ministers as old-school, superstitious dinosaurs, who are merely relics from antiquity!

Book excerpt: Robin Hood, whether riding through the glen, robbing the rich to pay the poor or giving the Sheriff of Nottingham his come-uppance, is one of the most captivating and controversial legendary figures. Was there a historical figure behind the legends? Did Robin and his Merry Men rampage through Sherwood Forest? Or did he spend most of his time in Barnsdale Wood in Yorkshire? And is the story of the freedom-loving Saxons refusing to be put under the Norman yoke, as portrayed in the Errol Flynn films, true?

Book excerpt: Philosophers have been thinking about lying for several thousand years, yet this topic has only recently become a central area of academic interest for philosophers of language, epistemologists, ethicists, and political philosophers. Lying: Language, Knowledge, Ethics, Politics provides the first dedicated collection of philosophical essays on the emerging topic of lying. Adopting an inter-subdisciplinary approach, this volume breaks new methodological ground in exploring the ways that a better understanding of language can inform the study of knowledge, ethics, or politics - and vice-versa. How can we lie when it is unclear what exactly we believe, or when we have contradictory beliefs? Can corporations lie, and if so how? Is lying always wrong, or always at least prima facie wrong? What can one learn from a liar? Can we lie to mindless machines? These engaging questions and many more are explored at length in this accessible reference text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary hero of Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood, is a figure who has in equal measure attracted and baffled historians for decades. With the first mention of him coming in Old English ballads, it was long assumed that it was almost impossible that he ever existed at all, and that he firmly belonged in the realm of Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner, and even Mel Brooks movies. Only a few historians have dared to venture that Robin of Sherwood was, in fact, a living and breathing human being. Historian John Paul Davis, while undertaking research on the Knights Templar, has uncovered new evidence on the folk hero that suggests that his ties to that order were much closer than previously supposed. Sticking closely to historical sources as well as the ballads, Davis has produced a new portrait of this intriguing figure with colorful and unique insights into the era that he lived in, reckoned by Davis to be at least 100 years closer to our own than previously supposed. Lavishly illustrated throughout, Robin Hood: The Unknown Templar will be of keen interest to anyone who has been even merely charmed by his legend; potentially explosive reading for those with their own theories of who Robin Hood really was.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robin Hood was the legendary hero of England who stole from the rich to help the poor. The stories about Robin appealed to common folk because he stood up againstand frequently outwittedpeople in power. Furthermore, his life in the foresthunting and feasting with his fellow outlaws, coming to the assistance of those in needseemed like a great and noble adventure.Early SourcesThe earliest known mention of Robin Hood is in William Langland's 1377 work calledPiers Plowman,in which a character mentions that he knows "rimes of Robin Hood." This and other references from the late 1300s suggest that Robin Hood was well established as a popular legend by that time. One source of that legend may lie in the old French custom of celebrating May Day. A character called Robin des Bois, or Robin of the Woods, was associated with this spring festival and may have been transplanted to Englandwith a slight name change. May Day celebrations in England in the 1400s featured a festival "king" called Robin Hood.Later VersionsBy the 1500s, more elaborate versions of the legend had begun to appear. Some of these suggested that Robin was a nobleman who had fallen into disgrace and had taken to the woods to live with other outlaws. Robin also acquired a girlfriend named Maid Marian and a new companion, a monk called FriarTuck. His adventures were then definitely linked to Sherwood Forest.Beginning in the 1700s, various scholars attempted to link Robin Hood with a real-life figureeither a nobleman or an outlaw. But none of their theories have stood up to close examination. Robin was most likely an imaginary creation, although some of the tales may have been associated with a real outlaw. Also at about this time, Robin began to be linked with the reigns of King Richard I, "The Lionhearted," who died in 1189, and of King John, who died in 1216. The original medieval ballads, however, contain no references to these kings or to a particular time in which Robin was supposed to have lived.Later versions of the Robin Hood legend placed more emphasis on Robin's nobility and on his romance with Marian than on the cruelty and social tension that appear in the early ballads. In addition to inspiring many books and poems over the centuries, Robin Hood became the subject of several operas and, in modern times, numerous movies.
