Book excerpt: Comprising five conceptual journeys generated by Google Maps, 'The Road to N'Djamena' proposes a new kind of psychogeography for the post-internet age: one which rejects the increasingly banal and ubiquitous motifs of conventional travel writing and re-introduces a world with (almost) unlimited possibilities. From Blaise Cendrars' 'Transsiberien' to Julio Cortazar's trawl through the rest-stops of French autoroutes, the avant-garde has long sought to expand upon the traditional definition of 'journey'. The Road to N'Djamena finds new wildernesses within its paratexts, inviting its readers to contemplate the still-impossibly-exotic without ever leaving their seats.

Each sonnet's subject matter, and perhaps also the perceived quality of its artistic execution, would reflect the tribulations of daily life. ANTI-SONNETS aimed to challenge assumptions associated with the sonnet form, and to champion the ascendency of context over content.THE ROAD TO N'DJAMENA: SONNETS is part of the extended fall-out.

Book excerpt: Farewell to NDjamena is a literally classic that carries out a narrative on the United Nation Mission in the Central Africa Republic and Chad (MINURCAT). The book examines the withdrawal of the European Force which gave way to MINURCAT Force activities in the region. Unfortunately one year later, the force was considered not to have attained its Humanitarian Mandate especially as the Presidential election was by the corner. Chad had made peace with the then old Sudan whose President had the ICJ hammer dangling on his neck for war crimes. All effort to get President Idriss Derby of Chad to extend MINURCAT Mandate proved abortive. Subsequently the mission began to wind up gradually. The author is of the view that the numerous political challenges and conflicts in African is caused by the greed of its leaders who have turned the institutions of governance to that of personal gains. Finally, the book will assist the United Nation Secretary General to know the challenges that faced MINURCAT which led to the resignation of the Special Representative of the Secretary General. It is a must read piece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Regional Development in Africa interrogates well-known concerns in the areas of regionalism and economic integration in contemporary Africa, while offering an added uniqueness by highlighting the capacity imperatives of the issues, and proposing critical policy guideposts. The volume juxtaposes a set of ’dynamic’ entanglements - new and micro-regionalism, informal cross-border trade, intra-African and African FDI plus cross-border investments, infrastructure development, science and technology, regional value-chains, conflict management and regional security - with fluid interpretations of regional development. The chapters provide snapshots of the several emerging and complex regionalisms and highlight a set of relevant and often overlapping analyses - drawing on authors’ nuanced and granular understanding of the African landscape. The varied, yet interlinked, nature of issues covered in this study make the book valuable and attractive to academics, researchers, policymakers and development practitioners.

Book excerpt: The Historical Dictionary of International Organizations in Africa and the Middle East focuses on international organizations in Africa. And the Middle East. This makes sense for political, cultural, and geographical reasons. North African countries, and many located in the Sahel region, are members of not only African but also Middle Eastern international organizations due to their cultural and religious heritage as well as geographic location between Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. A limited number of global organizations are also included in this book when they have major programs focusing on Africa and/or the Middle East. This volume emphasizes intergovernmental organizations but many non-governmental organizations are also included. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, thematic topics, and major international issues affecting the region. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about this subject.

Book Synopsis Africa's First Peacekeeping Operation by : Terry M. Mays
Download or read book Africa's First Peacekeeping Operation written by Terry M. Mays and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-05-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981 the Organization of African Unity (OAU) mandated and fielded the first regional peacekeeping operation since the Arab League's mission in Kuwait 20 years earlier. Battalion-sized contingents from Nigeria, Senegal, and Zaire were joined by smaller observer contingents from other OAU members in an effort to provide a buffer zone between the two main factions in the Chadian civil war. Mays opens his analysis by providing an overview of the concept of peacekeeping. Several definitions are offered to help distinguish between the various types of peace operations. After examining the concept hegemon, he looks at the ways regional and subregional hegemons utilize peacekeeping operations as foreign policy tools as they protect their interests. Mays argues that Nigeria, as a West African hegemon, served as the moving force behind the mandating and fielding of the OAU peacekeeping mission in Chad. Rather than being purely humanitarian in nature, Nigeria's motivation included the removal of French and later Libyan soldiers from a weak state on its border. However, Nigeria could not perform the task alone. France and the United States were instrumental as well in the mandating and fielding process. French and American interests stemmed from concern over Libyan motives in Chad. Nigeria kept the effort to mandate the peacekeeping operation alive for two years; France proved to be the stimulus behind persuading the Chadian government to accept the deployment of OAU peacekeepers and prompting the Senegalese to contribute a battalion to the mission; the United States contributed by keeping France and Nigeria focused on a peacekeeping solution and helping persuade Zaire to join the mission. Mays offers the first comprehensive examination of the OAU peacekeeping mission and reviews the political and military organization of the force as well as its deployment, redeployment plans, logistics, and operations between the Chadian factions. Utilizing an extensive collection of resources, including interviews with participants, diplomats, and government documents, he provdies a detailed examination of every meeting/conference between 1979 and 1981 that discussed a peacekeeping option for Chad. Factors of success in traditional peacekeeping operations are applied to the OAU mission, and he concludes by reviewing the impact of the 1981-1982 OAU operation on current African peacekeeping trends. An invaluable analysis for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with peacekeeping, international relations, and African studies.
