Book excerpt: Instead of using Acts as a prooftext for contemporary debates about speaking in tongues or church government, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume offers a biblical-theological framework meant to expose Luke's own purposes and themes. We find that Luke wanted to be read in light of both the Old Testament promises and the reign of Christ in the inaugurated kingdom of God.

Book Synopsis A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus's Resurrection by : Michael J. Alter
Download or read book A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus's Resurrection written by Michael J. Alter and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The keystone of Christianity is Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection. Present-day scholars can be significantly challenged as they forage through voluminous documents on the resurrection of Jesus. The literature measures well over seven thousand sources in English-language books alone. This makes finding specific sources that are most relevant for specific scholarly purposes an arduous task. Even when a specific book is relevant, finding the parts of the book that are most relevant to the resurrection rather than other topics often requires additional effort. A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus’s Resurrection addresses these challenges in several ways. First, the bibliography organizes more than seven thousand English sources into twelve main categories and then thirty-four subcategories, which are designed to help you find the most relevant literature quickly and efficiently. Embedded are pro and con arguments which support efficient access through brief annotations and then annotate the diversity and complexity of the field of religion by including sources that represent a diverse range of views: theistic (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.), agnostic, and nontheistic. The objective of this bibliography is to provide convenient access to relevant sources from a variety of perspectives, allowing you to browse or find the one source accurately and with ease.
Book Synopsis Essays on the Lord's Supper by : Oscar Cullmann
Download or read book Essays on the Lord's Supper written by Oscar Cullmann and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these two essays two distinguished Reformed scholars accept the challenge of understanding and explaining the central meaning of the Lord's Supper. How did primitive Christianity understand this event' What relationship was Christ attempting to establish with mankind' Did He wish to establish a link other than the one of preaching His Word' What is the relationship of Word and Sacrament' These and other vital issues for the churches of the Reformation tradition are addressed. In the first essay, Oscar Cullmann proposes to investigate the true meaning of the Lord's Supper with which primitive Christianity invested the cultic act of the sacred meal, as it was practised in the communities of the first century. He examines the Breaking of Bread and the Resurrection Appearances and draws a connection between the Lord's Supper and the Death of Christ, and successfully combines the two in his conclusion. The second essay, by F. J. Leenhardt, provides an answer to the question: What relationship did Christ wish to establish with man' Or more precisely, since Christ wished His disciples to proclaim His Gospel, He established a link which is the preaching of His Word: He that hears you, hears me. The question is therefore whether or not He wished to establish, by another means than the spoken Word, a further relationship with man. Both essays present new and original insights into the central meaning of the Lord's Supper.
