Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book came into development due to struggling with a lot of negative emotions for so many years. A fellow comrade introduced me to the idea of writing as a tool to remove the negativity from my spirit and it has helped a great deal. Since I started writing, I haven't been able to put the pen down and I'm so thankful to those who impacted my world in a positive way. We need the light to constantly shine its rays of love on us so that we will not succumb to the darkness which lurks in the shadows.I just want to change the thinking of those who believe that they should give up on the hopeless, because in truth they shouldn't. Everyone has that moment in their life were they wish they could change and take it back but they can't. All I can do is move forward and be better as a human-being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Powell argues persuasively and elegantly for the usefulness of formal models in studying international conflict and for the necessity of greater dialogue between modeling and empirical analysis. Powell makes it clear that many widely made arguments about the way states act under threat do not hold when subjected to the rigors of modeling. In doing so, he provides a more secure foundation for the future of international relations theory. Powell argues that, in the Hobbesian environment in which states exist, a state can respond to a threat in at least three ways: (1) it can reallocate resources already under its control; (2) it can try to defuse the threat through bargaining and compromise; (3) it can try to draw on the resources of other states by allying with them. Powell carefully outlines these three responses and uses a series of game theoretic models to examine each of them, showing that the models make the analysis of these responses more precise than would otherwise be possible. The advantages of the modeling-oriented approach, Powell contends, have been evident in the number of new insights they have made possible in international relations theory. Some argue that these advances could have originated in ordinary-language models, but as Powell notes, they did not in practice do so. The book focuses on the insights and intuitions that emerge during modeling, rather than on technical analysis, making it accessible to readers with only a general background in international relations theory.

Book excerpt: So, let me fill you in on a few things... The world is divided into two magical classes - the sun-class and the moon-class. For years the classes were locked in battle - the vicious Shadow Wars - until a peace treaty was drawn up a century ago. Now, the sun-class - the Faes, Celestials, and Elkie - live during the daylight hours. The moon-class - the Daimons, Weres, and Vanpari - live by night. I'm Elkie. With my super sensitive hearing and badass bow, I live wild and free in the mountains of upstate New York. At least I did, until Mom dropped a bombshell on me. She's engaged to be married. To none-other than William Geiser, the soon to be Sun Mayor of New York City. Without warning, I'm whisked away from the mountains to the city and enrolled at Zenith Academy, a supernatural school for the sun-class elite. I couldn't be more out of place with all the super wealthy Faes and Celestials, and I can't help the feeling something nefarious is going on... I'm not buying Geiser's friendly routine. And what's the deal with the broodingly handsome, infuriatingly mysterious Nik Storm, a transfer from the moon class? I'm determined to get to the bottom of it. But I get a whole lot more than I bargained for. Magic. Murder. A crush on a Vanpari. And a plot to reignite the Shadow Wars...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth International Congress for Analytical Psychology was held in West Berlin September 2-9, 1987. Its theme, The Archetype of Shadow in a Split World, was the focus of twenty-five major papers, with prepared responses to fourteen of them. Congress participants were several hundred Jungian analysts from around the world. The theme has a special meaning for our times and, especially, for a Congress set in the divided city of Berlin. There, the Wall is a vivid reminder of East-West divisions and of the countless divisions among humans. Many of these divisions are considered in this book. Some of the papers deal with the collective background of the Congress and its participant's lives. Other papers focus more on intra-psychic and inter-personal divisions as they are manifested clinically.

Book excerpt: This book provides detailed insight into some of the most contentious events occurring in jurisdictions operating within China's vast shadow. Epic clashes between law and politics have become a regular fixture throughout the world, and no region has seen more of these than Asia. In some cases these conflicts have involved newfound democratic aspirations or democratic deepening, while in others it has arisen because of pushback against authoritarian or semi-authoritarian governments. Indeed, many of these clashes centre on or involve the region's most powerful and controversial player: China. This book focuses on several of these critical struggles, examining how democracy and the rule of law play out in a number of jurisdictions highly influenced by China's presence. Chapters provide insightful analysis on issues such as: major threats to the rule of law and attempts to uphold the principle, oath-taking controversies, foreign judges and the disparagement of the judiciary, unconstitutional and undemocratic provisions, changing ideas of representation, a right to democracy in international law, same-sex marriage rights, and the legal responses to civil disobedience in Taiwan and Hong Kong, among other topics. Ultimately, the book delivers a contemporary understanding of how democracy and the rule of law both complement and converge in this fascinating region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What differentiates humans from other living beings is our ability to communicate, our complex reasoning, and our use of skilled hands and smart brains to build houses, cities, and societies. We are able to learn. We penetrate into the unknown. We dominate our planet. For thousands of years, we have lived close to animals. As we are gaining a more complete understanding of our physiology, we are observing that we are not so different from them and other life forms. By studying them, we can sharpen our senses, treat diseases, and overcome some of our weaknesses. By observing their unique capabilities, we invent ways to emulate their performances in areas where evolution has helped them excel. Animals have helped us build our human culture and civilization. We still take advantage of them, even push them back into ever more restricted habitats. We are now at risk of forgetting that Sapiens’ only way to thrive, and planet Earth to survive, will be to humbly accept our place in the “shadow of animals.” This book explains how various animals have adapted to extreme conditions, and why humans need to study animals and should protect them. It helps us to understand how “life on our planet” evolved. It is a popular presentation of the human–animal relationship for curious readers of all ages. It will hopefully stimulate scientific discussions among high school and university students.
