Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry A bibliography Of the subject has been appended to the book, but it must be understood that it is not intended to be complete; while the same may be said with regard to the references at the foot of the pages. In both cases the aim has been to furnish a guide to readers unacquainted with the literature rather than to give a complete list of publications. For the convenience of the reader, explanatory footnotes are distinguished by asterisks, while references to the literature are numbered. This, it is hoped, will obviate much unnecessary reference to the foot of the pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wohler's Outlines of Organic Chemistry It is, therefore, natural that of late the attention of Americans should have been attracted towards this field; and there begin to be slight indications of a desire on their part to aid In clearing up its many mysteries, a work in which for some years the Ger mans have been engaged almost to the exclusion of the chemists of other countries. Should the publica tion of this work tend in the slightest degree to increase this desire, I shall feel that my labor has not been in vain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of View has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the com pounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in Organic Chemistry: Part I. Elementary The distinction between organic and inorganic chemistry is, then, merely a convenient division of the vast material of the science, and organic chemistry may be defined as the chemistry of the hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Reasons for the separate Study of Organic Chem istry. The reasons which make it convenient still to maintain an artificial separation between inorganic and organic chemistry are chiefly the immense number of organic com pounds known - a number which receives additions every day - and the different character of the problems presented to us by them as compared with the much less numerous and comparatively simple inorganic bodies. In organic chemistry the most important points claiming our attention are the grouping of the atoms present in each compound, and the influence of this grouping on the properties of that compound. We shall find cases where the molecules of two different substances contain exactly similar atoms, and' in the same number, but the different arrangement of the atoms in the two molecules produces bodies with markedly different properties. The name isomerism is given to this phenomenon. Cases of it are almost unknown in inorganic chemistry, but are extremely frequent in organic chemistry see p. 24 for a further account of it.
