Book excerpt: When Kings Walked As Living Gods It is the eighteenth dynasty of Queen Maatkare Hatshepsut, divine ruler of a sun-seared realm. And blood flows as freely as the great, winding Nile that nourishes this ancient land of intrigue and danger. Lieutenant Bak is a loyal servant of the royal house of Egypt--commander of the Medjay police in the frontier fortress city of Buhen. A man of honor and ability, it is he who must oversee the corps assigned to accompany the golden idol, the god Amon, on its journey up the Nile to heal the ailing son of a powerful tribal king. But the mighty river has yielded up a sinister "treasure": the body of a brave soldier horrifically slain for reasons unknown. And only the drawings of a missing mute boy can help Bak unravel the mystery of the officer's foul death--before it leads to far greater crimes that could imperil an empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Amon has been part of some incredible things in his short life, especially in the last three years. Jesus has ascended to heaven, Saul has seen the light, and the church in Jerusalem is now well organized. It's finally time to make his own life his most exciting mission. But every time Amon thinks he's getting close to being able to build a family and a future, something gets in the way. One of the apostles needs help with something. A Roman tries to stir up trouble. His father volunteers him for something without asking. Amon is becoming convinced that he will never have a normal life. But maybe a normal life isn't part of God's plan for him after all. What Amon doesn't realize is that he's an eyewitness to some of the most thrilling times in the life of the early church. He's about to learn that God has a reason for everything and will turn Amon's challenging circumstances into blessings. Arnold Ytreeide's beloved characters from his hugely popular Christmas and Easter series are back in this story set within Acts. Full of adventure, friendship, and exciting biblical history, Amon's Mission is perfect for families to read together at any time of year, bringing the setting of the New Testament to vivid life.

Book excerpt: Best-selling author of family-tailored Lent and Advent books is back with a new adventure Adding to his widely popular Advent and Lent series, well-known author Arnold Ytreeide revisits the Jerusalem of Jesus in this captivating follow-up to Amon's Adventure. This time, Ytreeide takes families into the life of one of the founders of the church. Thirteen-year-old Amon has just watched Jesus ascend into heaven. What will Christ's followers do now? In the midst of Amon's confusion, the apostle Peter hands him an assignment: invent a way for the new Christian church to communicate and meet in secret. It must not be noticed by the penetrating eyes of Jesus' enemies who are still looking for anyone who dared call him the Messiah. Amon's task quickly turns dangerous. The Sanhedrin, led by Saul, begins hunting down believers in "The Way," even stoning some to death. Now Amon must walk a treacherous line between finishing the job he was given and working safely around those who would kill him if they knew his secret. Can he dodge cranky Romans and angry Pharisees and find a way for the new church to survive? With short, action-filled chapters, reflections for family devotions, and a foundation of archaeological evidence, Amon's Secret is a fun and powerful way to connect to the church's beginnings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Hatshepsut's Temple at Deir el Bahari is about a wonderful experiment in ancient Egyptian art and architecture, a uniquely remarkable structure, but more important it provides some insights about the men and a woman who were avant guard in their thinking at a time when females dared not rule. However, given the opportunity to do so, Queen Hatshepsut ruled well and was involved in many building projects, chief of which was her mortuary temple at Deir el Bahari, on the west bank at Thebes. The present work is a survey of the history of the Queen, her architect Senmut and their impact on the historical landscape of ancient Egypt. This work consists of two poems to the god Amon Ra and to the Temple of Deir el Bahari itself, an overview, an introduction, two essays on Hatshepsut and Senmut and conclusions by the author, as well as some published reports written more than a hundred years ago when the Swiss Egyptologist Edouard Naville excavated the temple. In addition, there are some 20 illustrations and photographs taken from the bird's eye view of the temple from the mountain, descending the mountain, and the ascent into the temple's colonnades, ramps, shrines, and to the middle and upper terrace at the mountain's base. The photographs are designed to "let the monuments teach" and as such, they highlight the art and architectural wonder of the temple and this work is therefore a guidebook for students, specialists, and laymen and women as well as for tourists.

The last time he'd seen Lisa was fifteen years ago when they were saying good-bye, ending a two year relationship. Before John can get Lisa's attention, she jumps into a car and speeds away. Moments later a multitude of explosions turn downtown Dallas into complete chaos. With nearly two hundred dead, John can't help but question the suspicious nature of Lisa Capps' sudden departure prior to the explosions. John's premature exodus from the CIA comes to an abrupt end. John elicits the help of a man known inside the CIA as the Wizard. The Wizard can find anyone, anywhere. What he discovers about John's old girlfriend is shocking. Lisa no longer resides in the United States, but lives in Iraq with her husband Doctor Amon Zandipour. Their son Andalee, and his grandfather, were killed on Andalee's third birthday by stray bullets; Zandipour swears were fired by American soldiers. Zandipour, now consumed by hatred for America, is out for revenge. John's search for Zandipour begins in Iraq, where he will find out the disturbing truth about Lisa Capps. Racing against time, John traces Zandipour to his extravagant home on Akdamar Island in Turkey. There John discovers what Zandipour's next target is. It's far more elaborate than Dallas. With time running out, and thousands of lives at stake, can John stop Zandipour before it's too late?

Book excerpt: Chris Amon, a New Zealand sheep farmer's son who led the Ferrari team for two seasons in the late 1960s, is remembered in Formula 1 as the best driver never to win a Grand Prix. Yet his contemporary Jackie Stewart rated him 'one of the world's foremost drivers' and Jochen Rindt considered him a true rival. Eoin Young, an ace storyteller, chronicles the life of this extraordinarily unlucky racer who was driving at the age of six, had a pilot's license at 16, and raced a 1954 250F Grand Prix Maserati a year later.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weseretkau "Mighty of Kas," honors the life and career of Professor Cathleen "Candy" Keller, a truly extraordinary teacher, scholar, Egyptologist, and polymath. The contributors to this volume were Professor Keller's students, friends, and colleagues. Though much of the research presented here centers around the honoree's two primary passions--Egyptian art and the study of the village of Deir el-Medina--the range of topics reflects her broad Egyptological interests, including religious organization, artistic technique, museum collections, textual analyses, historical events, and archaeological studies at sites throughout Egypt.
