Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Richmond Examiner During the War: Or the Writings of John M. Daniel President Buchanan is the last of the family of Presidents. He was learned in their school, looked and spoke, and endeavored to act and think as they did. The historical character which he desired to leave was one like theirs, and, whatever the failure in essentials, the style and outward mould was that of the Madisons, the Monroes, the Van Burens, Tylers, Polks. We would be uncandid to say that he has filled their measure; for though the retiring President is one of the most distinguished figures of our day; has passed a long life in the most splendid employment; and though he must always be reckoned as one of the most eminent and celebrated statesmen of this country, it is impossible to deny that his administration has been unequal to his fame; that he has left chaos where he found order, ruin where he found prosperity; or that much of this disaster may be fairly charged to his faults of character and policy. Book excerpt: Nelson Lankford draws upon Civil War-era diaries, letters, memoirs, and newspaper reports to vividly recapture the experiences of the men and women, both black and white, who witnessed the tumultuous fall of Richmond. In April 1865 General Robert E. Lee realized that his army must retreat from the Confederate capital and that Jefferson Davis's government must flee. As the Southern soldiers moved out they set the city on fire, leaving a blazing ruin to greet the entering Union troops. The city's fall ushered in the birth of the modern United States. Lankford's exploration of this pivotal event is at once an authoritative work of history and a stunning piece of dramatic prose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl R. Osthaus examines the southern contribution to American Press history, from Thomas Ritchie's mastery of sectional politics and the New Orleans Picayune's popular voice and use of local color, to the emergence of progressive New South editors Henry Watterson, Francis Dawson, and Henry Grady, who imitated, as far as possible, the New Journalism of the 1880s. Unlike black and reform editors who spoke for minorities and the poor, the South's mainstream editors of the nineteenth century advanced the interests of the elite and helped create the myth of southern unity. The southern press diverged from national standards in the years of sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Addicted to editorial diatribes rather than to news gathering, these southern editors of the middle period were violent, partisan, and vindictive. They exemplified and defended freedom of the press, but the South's press was free only because southern society was closed. This work broadens our understanding of journalism of the South, while making a valuable contribution to southern history.
