The objectives of this program were: Investigate the relationship between the chemical and physical properties of coal and the rheology of coal-water slurry Define procedures for evaluating and preparing coal water slurries for a particular coal candidate, based on the characteristic coal properties Develop improved methods of screening surfactants used in coal-water slurry preparation Perform experiments designed to investigate the effect of characteristic coal properties on slurry quality, by examining the effect of the individual coal properties on slurry quality Develop a statistical formulation to predict the coal content of a given coal water slurry content based on the coal characteristic properties.

Book excerpt: During the previous quarter, it was noted that understanding the rheology of polymeric additives used in enhancing the stability of the CWS was essential in meeting the project objectives. Thus, further review of the literature was carried out to gain information on the rheology of polymeric additives, particularly at high shear rates. Philippoff and Hess [1] reported the existence of four distinct flow regions in the behavior of flow curve analysis of polymer solutions (Figure 1). These regions are characterized by (1) A Newtonian Region; (2) A non-Newtonian pseudoplastic region; (3) A second Newtonian region at high shear rates 10[sup 5] to 10[sup 6] sec[sup [minus]1]; (4) and a region of steepening slope identified as the onset of turbulence. Efforts during this past quarter were therefore directed towards the study of high shear rheology of the CWS.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is the development of improved technology for the preparation of coal-water slurries that have potential for replacing fuel oil in direct combustion. This should be of major importance to the United States in its efforts to reduce dependence on imported oil and to rely more on its enormous low-cost coal resources. According to this objective, Quarterly Report No. 1 presented preliminary results on the rheological behavior of coal-water slurries prepared from Pittsburgh No. 8 coal that had been ground in a ball mill under various conditions. Quarterly Report No. 2 summarized the results of studies on the effects of solids content and water immobilization on the rheological behavior of coal-water slurries, including the role of different viscometers, such as the Haake Rotovisco RV-12 and Brookfield Synchro-Lectric LVT on the measured results. In Quarterly Report No. 3, the authors compared the rheological behavior of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal-water slurries using different sensor system. In Quarterly Report No. 4, studies on the role of the initial mixing procedure in the preparation of coal-water slurries were summarized. In Quarterly Report No. 5, the evaluation of the effect of a cationic surfactant (TMAE) and an anionic surfactant (2-TEPA) on the rheological behavior and the aggregative stability of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal-water slurries was presented. In Quarterly Report No. 6, the effect of nonionic surfactants (Triton X series) on the aggregative stability of coal-water slurries was studied by measuring the relative sedimentation volume and floc size distribution.

The stability was determined using a settling column to study the shift in mass of the CWS as a function of time. Low shear testing of the slurries were used to determine the effect of yield stress on the concentration of the slurries.
