Book Synopsis Historical Archaeology of the Revolutionary War Encampments of Washington's Army by : Cosimo Sgarlata
Download or read book Historical Archaeology of the Revolutionary War Encampments of Washington's Army written by Cosimo Sgarlata and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents recent archaeological and ethnohistorical research on the encampments, trails, and support structures of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. These sites illuminate the daily lives of soldiers, officers, and camp followers away from the more well-known military campaigns and battles. The research featured here includes previously unpublished findings from the winter encampments at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, as well as work from sites in Redding, Connecticut, and Morristown, New Jersey. Topics range from excavations of a special dining cabin constructed for General George Washington to ballistic analysis of a target range established by General von Steuben. Contributors use experimental archaeology to learn how soldiers constructed their log hut quarters, and they reconstruct Rochambeau's marching route through Connecticut on his way to help Washington defeat the British at Yorktown. They also describe the underrecognized roles of African descendants, Native peoples, and women who lived and worked at the camps. Showing how archaeology can contribute insights into the American Revolution beyond what historical records convey, this volume calls for protection of and further research into non-conflict sites that were crucial to this formative struggle in the history of the United States. Contributors: Cosimo Sgarlata - Joseph Balicki - Joseph R. Blondino - Douglas Campana - Wade P. Catts - Daniel Cruson - Mathew Grubel - Mary Harper - Diane Hassan - David G. Orr - Julia Steele - Laurie Weinstein

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revolutionary Soldiers of Redding: Connecticut, and the Record of Their Services Mr. John N. Nickerson, town clerk of Redding, tor free access to the town records; to Mr. Charles Burr Todd for permission to quote from his works, and to numerous friends, not less valued because unnamed, whose contributions have enabled the author to more fully complete records which add much to the interest of the volume. A brief index has been added to the historical section. From the arrangement of the biographical portion of the work, an index is there considered unnecessary. The illustrations in this work have been procured with considerable difficulty. The cut of Putnam's headquarters, taken from Barber's "Connecticut Historical Collection," was obtained through the courtesy of Mr. Albert C. Bates, librarian of the Historical Society; the photographs of Rev. Mr. Bartlett, the guardhouse, and Gallows Hill were secured by Mr. F. E. Headman, photographer, of Norwalk, Conn., and six halftones are the work of the Hartford Engraving Company. The illustrations of the entrance and monument at Putnam Memorial Camp were kindly loaned by Mr. George A. Parker, of the Camp Commission. For the British orders, reports, returns, and correspondence the author is principally indebted to Messrs. B. F. Stevens and Brown of London, England. Download or read book Putnam's Revolutionary War Winter Encampment written by Daniel Cruson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putnam State Park, Connecticut's first state park, was the site of Revolutionary War general Israel Putnam's last command. In the winter of 1778-79, three thousand troops of the Continental army built and lived in "the city," a winter encampment in the valleys of northern Redding. Historian Daniel Cruson describes in fascinating archaeological detail the construction of the camp and the soldiers' daily struggle to survive. Mutiny, execution, skirmishes and the heroism of Putnam himself are revealed in this compelling history. The story of Putnam State Park doesn't end when Continental troops marched out to engage the British; Cruson takes readers from the creation of the park itself to the present day.

Book Synopsis Washington's Spies by : Alexander Rose
Download or read book Washington's Spies written by Alexander Rose and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Turn: Washington’s Spies, now an original series on AMC Based on remarkable new research, acclaimed historian Alexander Rose brings to life the true story of the spy ring that helped America win the Revolutionary War. For the first time, Rose takes us beyond the battlefront and deep into the shadowy underworld of double agents and triple crosses, covert operations and code breaking, and unmasks the courageous, flawed men who inhabited this wilderness of mirrors—including the spymaster at the heart of it all. In the summer of 1778, with the war poised to turn in his favor, General George Washington desperately needed to know where the British would strike next. To that end, he unleashed his secret weapon: an unlikely ring of spies in New York charged with discovering the enemy’s battle plans and military strategy. Washington’s small band included a young Quaker torn between political principle and family loyalty, a swashbuckling sailor addicted to the perils of espionage, a hard-drinking barkeep, a Yale-educated cavalryman and friend of the doomed Nathan Hale, and a peaceful, sickly farmer who begged Washington to let him retire but who always came through in the end. Personally guiding these imperfect everyday heroes was Washington himself. In an era when officers were gentlemen, and gentlemen didn’ t spy, he possessed an extraordinary talent for deception—and proved an adept spymaster. The men he mentored were dubbed the Culper Ring. The British secret service tried to hunt them down, but they escaped by the closest of shaves thanks to their ciphers, dead drops, and invisible ink. Rose’s thrilling narrative tells the unknown story of the Revolution–the murderous intelligence war, gunrunning and kidnapping, defectors and executioners—that has never appeared in the history books. But Washington’s Spies is also a spirited, touching account of friendship and trust, fear and betrayal, amid the dark and silent world of the spy.

Book Synopsis Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia by : Howard H. McCall
Download or read book Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia written by Howard H. McCall and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mrs. McCall's roster of Georgia soldiers in the Revolution was compiled over many years. The work as a whole is cumulative, with only slight, albeit significant, differences in the kinds of information which may be found in one volume versus another. Volume I of this work contains the records of hundreds of Revolutionary War soldiers and officers of Georgia, with genealogies of their families, and lists of soldiers buried in Georgia whose graves have been located. Volumes II and III are also published by Clearfield Company. The arrangement of Volume II is similar to that of Volume I; however, it contains records of officers and soldiers not only from Georgia but from other states, many of whose descendants later came to Georgia because of liberal land grants. Volume III, the longest of the work, is similar in scope to Volume II except that the majority of the entries are for Georgia officers and soldiers, with only some material relating to other states. The three volumes, each of which is indexed, refer to as many as 20,000 persons overall.
