Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common School Spelling Book American school children, from the descendants of the early colonists to the little immigrants of today, come from many races. These races do not attach the same sounds to the letters of the English alphabet. But if American chil dren may see in the pages of their first spelling book the usual combinations of English sounds in words, if they are made to feel the strength and beauty and natural growth of these words, they will develop instinctively a kind of language patriotism. They will come to know that the languages of their parents are represented just as truly in the structure of the English language as their races are rep resented in the American people. These different race-elements in our language have brought with them their conflicting systems of spelling. Nevertheless, in spite of this conflict, the majority of Eng lish words are fairly regular in spelling; that is, they are spelled according to rational principles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Spelling Book Improved methods in the teaching of spelling are replacing old ones as rapidly as the modern principle of teaching form through content is gaining recognition in schoolroom practice. The principles underlying the teaching of spelling are precisely those underlying the enriching and shortening of the entire course of study, by which the child takes a short cut to knowl edge through an appeal to his interest and the power gained through the cultivation of his mind. So long as we hammer at the child's brain as though it were so much cold steel in the belief that if we hammer hard enough and long enough some impression must be made, so long will the teaching of spelling meet with a greater or less degree of failure. It is a common fallacy for teachers to believe that if they teach the letters of a word, time will fill in the empty form with the proper content. Two things are forgotten in this process: first, that in the human mind nothing dwells in isolation and that the child puts some content into every form he learns a wrong one if he is not supplied with the right one and second, that the child, realizing that his teacher is indifferent to his knowing the content of the word, grows both mentally and morally careless. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Howell First Reader All the spellings in the howell primer are repeated in this book; and for any child it is a complete introduction to reading in the English language. When he masters the howell first reader, he can read anything he may have occasion to read. For the beginner in this series does more than learn mere words; he learns the spelling ele ments, and thus becomes an independent reader. This book begins with the spellings taught in the howell primer; pages 9 - 20 contain nothing new in the way of spelling to the child that has mastered the Primer, though some new words are met with here. The method is the same as that of the Primer only one new spelling element is taught at a time thus the grading is regular and easy. Without taking too much space for a discussion of methods of teaching (which would be unfair to the purchasers of a book for children), the author would urge teachers to see that their pupils learn the word lists; review them often; a mastery of them will give pupils power to read not only this book, but any other book. Do not however, require beginners to learn by heart the spelling of all these words if elementary pupils can read them easily, that is enough to expect. A manual on the teaching of elementary reading, with special application to the howell primer and the howell first reader, is in preparation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Graded Spelling-Book: A Complete Course in Spelling for Schools and Academies So long as English Orthography retains its characteristic anomalies, the need of text-books and regular drill in this study will continue. The design of the book here presented is to apply to the study of English spelling the principles of modern educational science. Many valuable features found in the older books have been retained, and the innovations contained in this work are believed to be in the interest of real education. The ordinary difficulties of the study of spelling have been much increased by the common practice of including in the text-books great numbers of unfamiliar words which have no practical value to the majority of pupils, and still further by arbitrary methods of arrangement and classification. The vocabulary contained in this book includes a nearly as possible all words in common use which offer some difficulty in spelling. Words which are purely phonic have been largely excluded from these pages. It is believed that the principles of classification which have been followed will commend themselves to every practical teacher. Book excerpt: The "father of American scholarship and education," American lexicographer NOAH WEBSTER (1758-1843) was an author whose astonishingly prolific career included numerous textbooks for elementary education. Prior to his works coming into wide use in the late 18th century, colonial and American students learned from primers imported from England. Webster single-handedly prompted a democratization of American English in how his textbooks taught American children to read, spell, and pronounce words, and in how he "Americanized" spelling, changing some c's to s's, dropping some l's and u's. Without Webster, George Bernard Shaw may never have been able to quip that England and America were two nations separated by a common language. Webster's basic textbook, first called The First Part of the Grammatical Institute of the English Language and later The American Spelling Book, became, in 1829, The Elementary Spelling Book. Though the book went through hundreds of editions, this replica edition represents the last, greatest, and arguably the most influential one. It is an extraordinary firsthand look at how American English was shaped.
