Book excerpt: Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between race (African American and European American, females), congruence and life goals/desires (fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities). In summary, the Self-Directed Search was used to obtain the Holland-personality-types of the participants. Each participant's Holland-environment-code was derived from her college major. The participants' Holland-personality-code and the Holland-environment-code were then used to define individuals (using a first-letter or C-index definition) as congruent or incongruent. Three MANOVAs were conducted with race and congruence as independent variables, and the scales of the Reiss Profile of Fundamental Goals and Motivation Sensitivities as dependent variables. Three ANOVAs were also used to compare African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, on total career decision-making self-efficacy (as measured by the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy scale-Short Form). In addition, two exploratory MANOVA analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between the independent variables of race and career decision-making self-efficacy, and the dependent variables of fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities on the Reiss. In general, African American and European American, female college students were found to differ on some of the Reiss scales, while congruent and incongruent individuals did not tend to differ. Results were generally similar, regardless of whether the first-letter or C-index was used to define congruence. Also, African American and European American female college students, as well as congruent and incongruent groups, did not differ in their levels of career decision-making self-efficacy. Finally, Career decision-making self-efficacy was associated with differences in expressed needs/desires and life goals as measured by the Reiss. Results generally suggest that factors such as race and self-efficacy, may impact the fundamental goals/motivation sensitivities expressed by these college students.

Book excerpt: My research focused on the relationship between career development and the different facets of racism that presents challenges in the world of academia. The social landscape of society was torn as a result of the deaths of Travon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Grey and Eric Garner. Public opinion has varied on the causes of the deaths of many individuals in the African American community. As the author of this study I felt compelled to highlight the strength and perseverance of minorities in a college environment. Upon the completion of my study I realized that I was chronicling myself.

Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lent, Brown, and Hackett's (1994) social cognitive career theory (SCCT) is a theoretical model of career development that delineates how person, contextual, and sociocognitive factors affect the formation of vocational interests, career choice goals, career choice actions, and academic/career performance attainments. Although considerable research support has been demonstrated for several key paths in SCCT, several other areas of SCCT have been under-researched or have received mixed empirical support. The purpose of the present study was to address several limitations of the extant literature. Specifically, the present study examined (a) the applicability of SCCT with an African American sample, (b) the validity of SCCT across Holland's (1997) six vocational domains, (c) the role of specific learning experiences in the formation of corresponding self-efficacy and outcome expectations, and (d) the moderating role of perceptions of racism in the relationship between vocational interests and corresponding choice goals. Results of path analyses based on a sample of 208 African American college students revealed strong support for all of the hypothesized relations involving corresponding learning experiences, self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, vocational interests and choice goals for each of the six Holland themes. Furthermore, although the nature of some of the observed relations (i.e., direct vs. indirect) was not always supportive of my hyptheses, overall, the results indicated that SCCT is a valid model to use with African Americans. In addition, the results revealed strong support for the applicability of SCCT to Holland's (1997) RIASEC themes. Regarding the role of specific learning experiences in self-efficacy and outcome expectations, results revealed partial support for both my hypothesis that verbal persuasion would contribute most strongly and SCCT's predication that performance accomplishments would account for the majority of the unique variance. These findings suggest that for African American college students, the role that learning experiences play in the formation of their self-efficacy beliefs and outcome expectations is domain-specific. Finally, results of moderated regressions and follow-up analyses tended not to support the hypothesis that perceptions of racism would moderate the relationship between vocational interests and choice goals. The results revealed that perceptions of racism significantly moderated the interestes-goals relation in only one model--the Realistic model for men--and, contrary to prediction, a greater perception of racism actually strengthened the Realistic interests-choice goals relationship."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This study explored the effects of a semester-long, 2 credit career development course on the undecided college students. Participants included undergraduate students enrolled in the Career Development (COUN 105) class and comparison group students enrolled in Introductory Psychology (PSYX 100), and Intimate and Family Relationship (COUN 295) classes at The University of Montana. Students were assessed at the beginning and the end of the Spring and Fall semesters, 2010 by using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 1983), Career Orientation scale, Career Decision Scale (Osipow et al., 1976), and Decisional Process Inventory (Hartung, 1994). The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine whether a career development course offered at The University of Montana would have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on career decision-making, self-efficacy, and other career decision making processes among undergraduate students. Based on (MANOVA) results, COUN 105 students significantly increased their sense of career self-efficacy as a function of the course. Based on these results, it was recommended for the development and implementation of career courses for undecided undergraduates become mandatory.

Book excerpt: The exploration of African American adolescents' career development has gained increasing attention in light of literature describing various barriers impacting their educational and career development and goals. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) was used as a theoretical framework to help shed light on the contextual factors that influence their career development. This study examined the relationship between career decision self-efficacy, ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement of African American high school students. The sample consisted of African American high school students enrolled in Upward Bound programs. Through quantitative methods, this study adds to the career development literature by including ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement as combined factors that may impact the career development of African American adolescents. Specifically, the results of this study assists teachers, administrators, parents, and school counselors with understanding career decision self-efficacy as it relates to ethnic identity, academic self-concept, achievement, and demographic variables. This study also provides implications for career counseling interventions in schools designed to assist with career development.
