Book excerpt: The Carter Boys are a rap group on the rise, and their name rings loud in Atlanta. With their pretty-boy looks and take-no-prisoners demeanor, all the men want to be like them, and women will fight to be with them. Stepping outside of his relationship with his current woman seems impossible to Trent, the preppy college boy of the Carter family, because he fought hard to make things work with Jade. But that all changes when the girl who had a childhood crush on him comes back into the picture looking totally different than he remembered. How does the smooth, smart, and prettiest of the Carter boys deal with this, especially now that he finally has tough-as-nails Jade in his life? Still not quite understanding his quiet and dark demeanor, Noelle can't help the attraction she feels for her mysterious neighbor, Shiloh Carter. Could it be the romantic and affectionate side he shows her when no one else is around? Or is the mystery surrounding this man really a major turn on for her? Everything between the two neighbors is great until she gets a front row seat to a side of Shiloh that she never saw coming. Will Noelle stick around, or will she pack her things and move far away from Atlanta when she realizes that Shiloh is more dangerous than she thought? Shiloh and Trent take center stage in this second installment of The Carter Boys series, but all the alluring and mysterious Carters make an appearance in this story about the sexy, powerful brothers that readers just can’t get enough of.

Book Synopsis Boys Gone Wild by : Eric Michael Carter
Download or read book Boys Gone Wild written by Eric Michael Carter and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boys Gone Wild examines why some professional football players participate in deviant, and sometimes illegal, behavior while others do not. According to Carter's research, nearly one in three professional football players have been charged with serious crimes. Carter gained access into an exclusive group of National Football League players, interviewing and surveying 104 participants. His qualitative data revealed three core themes: deviance, anomie, and social ties. A substantial number of players had prior experience with deviant and illegal behaviors. Many reported problems coping with how drastically their lives changed (i.e., anomie) upon entering the NFL. Moreover, virtually fifty percent reported being unhappy with their life--despite being wealthy and famous. It appeared that some level of anomie was present in a number of these players' lives; however, players that had strong ties to various social groups appeared less likely to succumb to anomie and deviance. Supporting the qualitative data, the quantitative findings revealed that anomie was one of the significant predictors of law-breaking players. Carter suggests that many of the players were involved in behaviors that could be labeled anomic deviance. Furthermore, the findings supported the primacy of social ties and support in buffering anomie and deviance in the lives of professional football players.

Book excerpt: Scottsboro tells the riveting story of one of this country's most famous and controversial court cases and a tragic and revealing chapter in the history of the American South. In 1931, two white girls claimed they were savagely raped by nine young black men aboard a freight train moving across northeastern Alabama. The young men-ranging in age from twelve to nineteen-were quickly tried, and eight were sentenced to death. The age of the defendants, the stunning rapidity of their trials, and the harsh sentences they received sparked waves of protest and attracted national attention during the 1930s. Originally published in 1970,Scottsboro triggered a new interest in the case, sparking two film documentaries, several Hollywood docudramas, two autobiographies, and numerous popular and scholarly articles on the case. In his new introduction, Dan T. Carter looks back more than thirty-five years after he first wrote about the case, asking what we have learned that is new about it and what relevance the story of Scottsboro still has in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Famously adapted into the iconic film starring Michael Caine, Get Carter—originally published as Jack’s Return Home—ranks among the most canonical of crime novels. With a special Foreword by Mike Hodges, director of Get Carter It’s a rainy night in the mill town of Scunthorpe when a London fixer named Jack Carter steps off a northbound train. He’s left the neon lights and mod lifestyle of Soho behind to come north to his hometown for a funeral—his brother Frank’s. Frank was very drunk when he drove his car off a cliff and that doesn’t sit well with Jack. Mild-mannered Frank never touched the stuff. Jack and Frank didn’t exactly like one another. They hadn’t spoken in years and Jack is far from the sentimental type. So it takes more than a few people by surprise when Jack starts plying his trade in order to get to the bottom of his brother’s death. Then again, Frank’s last name was Carter, and that’s Jack’s name too. Sometimes that’s enough. Set in the late 1960s amidst the smokestacks and hardcases of the industrial north of England, Get Carter redefined British crime fiction and cinema alike. Along with the other two novels in the Jack Carter Trilogy, it is one of the most important crime novels of all time.
