Book Synopsis Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants by : F. John Vernberg
Download or read book Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants written by F. John Vernberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Monitoring of Marine Pollutants presents the proceedings of a symposium on ""Pollution and Physiology of Marine Organisms"" held in Milford, Connecticut, on November 7-9, 1980. It looks at the physiological effects of pollutants, such as synthetic organic compounds, petroleum hydrocarbons, and heavy metals, on marine organisms ranging from fishes and shrimps to barnacles, crabs, mussels, polychaetes, and microalgae. Comprised of four sections encompassing 22 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the effects of synthetic organics, such as pesticides on marine organisms like the mysid shrimps Mysidopsis bahia. It proceeds with a discussion of the toxic effects of several chlorophenols on the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio; how heavy metals, including silver, copper, cadmium, zinc, and mercury, affect species such as the polychaete Neanthes virens and the caridean shrimp Palaemonetes pugio; monitoring of water quality based on the biochemical and physiological responses of marine organisms to pollutants; and the effects of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on fishes from an ecological standpoint. Marine scientists, ecologists, and students will find this book extremely useful.

Book Synopsis Pollutant Studies In Marine Animals by : C. S. Giam
Download or read book Pollutant Studies In Marine Animals written by C. S. Giam and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to summarize the joint efforts of a group of workers who developed systems for analysing marine pollution for use with marine animals and then use these systems to monitor certain select marine populations. Approach taken is to seek pollutant-induced changes in metabolite (e.g. glutathione, ascorbate) concentrations, in hormone concentrations, in enzymes associated with pollutant metabolism (e.g. the cytochrome P-450 mixed-function oxidase system), in immunological capacity and in cellular morphology. The work reported here details the specific methods used and summarizes the results of measurement of the parameters in both pristine and exposed animals. Not all systems exhibited changes in response to the pollutants tested; these systems are also discussed here to help others avoid these potential, but insensitive, markers.

Book Synopsis Physiological Response of Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum) to Hooking/playing and Hooking/holding Stress by : M. S. Sobchuk
Download or read book Physiological Response of Walleye (Stizostedion Vitreum Vitreum) to Hooking/playing and Hooking/holding Stress written by M. S. Sobchuk and published by Ontario, Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1988 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluates physiological response to hooking/playing and hooking/holding (on stringers) stress. Stress imposed under standardized conditions. Blood clotting time was used as index of non-specific physiological stress response. Plasma chloride & hematocrit were used to evaluate osmoregulatory changes & gill ion exchange function. Plasma glucose & plasma cholesterol were used to evaluate changes in carbohydrate & lipid metabolism. Both types of stress produced significant changes in each blood parameter measured, but did not cause any mortality. Physiolo gical responses during recovery phase were very apparent in blood clotting time, hematocrit & plasma glucose.

Book Synopsis Physiological Ecology of Pacific Salmon by : Cornelis Groot
Download or read book Physiological Ecology of Pacific Salmon written by Cornelis Groot and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, countless juvenile Pacific salmon leave streams and rivers on their migration to feeding grounds in the North Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea. After periods ranging from a few months to several years, adult salmon enter rivers along the coasts of Asia and North America to spawn and complete their life cycle. Within this general outline, various life history patterns, both among and within species, involve diverse ways of exploiting freshwater, estuarine, and marine habitats. There are seven species of Pacific salmon. Five (coho, chinook chum, pink, and sockeye) occur in both North America and Asia. Their complex life histories and spectacular migrations have long fascinated biologists and amateurs alike. Physiological Ecology of Pacific Salmon provides comprehensive reviews by leading researchers of the physiological adaptations that allow Pacific Salmon to sustain themselves in the diverse environments in which they live. It begins with an analysis of energy expenditure and continues with reviews of locomotion, growth, feeding, and nutrition. Subsequent chapters deal with osmotic adjustments enabling the passage between fresh and salt water, nitrogen excretion and regulation of acid-base balance, circulation and gas transfer, and finally, responses to stress. This thorough and authoritative volume will be a valuable reference for students and researchers of biology and fisheries science as they seek to understand the environmental requirements for the perpetuation of these unique and valuable species.
