It scorches. It droughts. It suspends itself in celestial mo ments of sheer clarity that hearten the soul. Whatever else it may do, it challenges rather than enervates. Rather than complacency it breeds philosophy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oregon: Its Resources, Climate, People, and Productions IN the months of July and August of the past year, 1877, I accompanied, at the invitation of Mr. Wallis Nash, of 12, Queen Street, London, a party which paid a some what hurried visit to the State of Oregon; and I now, at the request of Mr. Nash, give here in the following report a short account of the aspects, climate, resources, and condition of the people of the State, which account is to a large extent extracted from official documents, but also supplemented by observations made by myself during the tour above referred to. I extract from the official publications, because, from the numerous Opportunities which I have had of testing the statements contained in them, I believe them to be thoroughly trustworthy; and as they have been prepared with great care, they seem to me to give as complete and satisfactory an account of the country and its re sources, from the point of view required by the emigrant or capitalist, as can be condensed within the limits of a pamphlet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oregon: Facts Regarding Its Climate, Soil, Mineral and Agricultural Resources, Means of Communication, Commerce and Industry, Laws, Etc., Etc., For General Information No one in our day will be bold enough to dispute the fact that the Pacific States possess natural advantages far superior to those of any of the Eastern, Western, or Southern States. In natural beauty, mildness and salubrity of climate, varied productiveness of soil; and richness in mineral and other resources, they are incomparably more attractive than most of the latter. They are, indeed, among the most favored lands on the face of the globe, and certain to develop into great and prosperous commonwealths. The only wonder with those familiar with their attractions is, that they have not filled up much more rap idly with population. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Water Resources of a Portion of South-Central Oregon The rapidly increasing settlement and development of the West which has accompanied the recent industrial expansion of the United States has led to a growth of interest in all of those factors that affect its adaptability to human needs. One of the clearest evidences of this increasing interest is the constant demand for definite and trust worthy information concerning its climate, soils, mineral resources, timber, and water. So great is this demand that the Federal and local bodies which have been organized to study the natural resources are scarcely able to meet it. In the arid and semiarid sections no question is of more vital importance than that of water supply. Where water can be intro duced or developed in abundance colonization will take place; where water exists in limited quantity, sparse settlement is possible; but where water is'not to be had present conditions must continue. The water - resources branch of the United States Geological Survey has for many years been making systematic studies of water supplies, both surface and subsurface, and in connection with work under way in many localities, both in the East and in the West, in the fall of 1906 the writer was assigned to carry out a reconnaissance in south central Oregon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oregon for the Settler Oregon is a wonderland of natural resources, scenic beauty, and congenial climate. It is frequently referred to as a land of promise; but it is more than that - it is a land of fulfillment. Nature has done much here in Oregon for the welfare of mankind. The residents of the state, aware of the advantages of living under congenial conditions and eager to see others enjoy these bounties, have already done much, and are now definitely organized to do still more, in making conditions for the settler not only agreeable for the present but secure for the future. But the settler must look squarely at conditions; he must measure his own resources against these conditions. and be willing to do his part to work out success. Oregon welcomes producers. She needs workers to take up her farm lands and develop her natural resources. She welcomes the home maker. Here as elsewhere, intelligence, initiative, and industry are necessary to make good in a big way. But for the man who is willing to work on the land, and shape it into a farm home, Oregon offers unparalleled opportunities. Oregon, and especially Western Oregon, is a land of beautiful homes. Her mild and equable climate, her magnificent scenery, and her luxuriant verdure, attract the settler who, though he may be past the age or the need to conduct a farm or a business merely for profit, delights in an environment that promotes his health, stimulates his energy, and prolongs not only his life but his joy in living. The purpose of this booklet is to sketch, in plain and straight forward terms, the resources and opportunities of Western Oregon, and to supply to those who are planning to come to the Pacific Coast accurate information about the country, its people, and its institutions. Less than one-third of the land of Western Oregon is now in cultivation. Oregon needs more dairymen, more scientific fruit and berry growers, more poultry producers, more truck farmers, and more general farmers. She needs more people to enjoy the rich and varied products of these farms. So there is abundant room for you in Oregon. If you want to become a producer in this state of vast virgin resources, "the one uncut melon of the western world," if you want to learn what opportunities await you here, write to any representative listed on page 64. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oregon System: The Story of Direct Legislation in Oregon How would you like to live in a state where the people can and do enact laws for the common good which their Legislature has failed to enact for them, where they can nullify any obnoxious measure passed by the Legislature, where they can nominate and elect, or defeat for public office, any man regardless of his party strength, and can recall any public officer, Supreme Judge included, whose acts they do not approve; a state where the party boss has been put out of business; a state in short where the people rule and of which Senator Jonathan Bourne says, "It is the best system of popular government in the world today"? Farms were offered for sale, but there were few buyers. My father alone succeeded in selling his farm, and no doubt at a great sacrifice. As I remember, my father received about $3000 for 160 acres of finest farming land and 40 acres of timber land in the San gamon river bottom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oregon Territory, Its History and Discovery The object which the author had in view, in instituting the accompanying inquiry into the historical facts and the negotiations connected with the Oregon Territory, was to contribute, as tar as his individual services night avail, to the peaceful solution of the question at issue between the United States of America and Great Britain. He could not resist the conviction, on reading several able treatises on the subject, that the case of the United States had been overstated by her writers and negotiators; and the perusal of Mr. Greenhow's Official Memoir, and subsequent history of Oregon and California, confirmed him in this impression, as they sought to establish more than was consistent with the acknowledged difficulty of a question, which has now been the subject of four fruitless negotiations. He determined, in consequence of this conviction, to investigate carefully the records of ancient discoveries and other matters of history connected with the north-west coast of America, concerning which much contradictory statement is to be met with in writers of acknowledged reputation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report on the Geology and Water Resources of Central Oregon, 1906 The region to which attention is here invited is indicated on the map forming P]. I. The portion Of Oregon referred to is not only new to geologists (so far as I am aware, no descriptions of its physical features, water resources, or geology are in print), but has not been topographically surveyed. The only map available for use during my reconnaissance was a map Of the State Of Oregon, drawn to a scale Of 12 miles to an inch, published by the General Land Office of the Interior Department. TO a large extent this map is devoid of data in reference to even the more conspicuous elements of the relief of the central portion Of the State.
