Book excerpt: Dutch Golden Age poet Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687) was a remarkable figure: in addition to writing poetry, he composed music; was secretary to two Princes of Orange, Frederick Henry and William II; and became a friend to John Donne, Rembrandt, Descartes, and many other notable people of his time. In this book, Peter Davidson and Adriaan van der Weel offer a broad selection of Huygens’s poems and provide excellent translations for those written in Dutch, Latin, and a number of other languages—revealing both Huygens’s literary talent and his remarkable linguistic range.

Book excerpt: "Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) was one of the Dutch nation's principal contributions to the transformation of European culture in the early-modern period. As a poet, diplomat, scholar and statesman, he had far-reaching influence on the cultural, scholarly and political life of his time. This collection introduces Huygens' poetry to English-speaking readers and presents a literary counterpart to the much better-known visual arts of the Dutch Golden Age. The poems have been selected to demonstrate the breadth of his interests, his pivotal role in European culture and his mastery of a variety of literary genres and styles. As a poet, Huygens wrote not only in his native Dutch, but also in Latin, French, Italian, German and English, and he made translations from these and other languages." "All poems are presented in both Dutch (or Latin) and English, the translations facing the original, and are provided with headnotes. The concise biographical and cultural introduction, the three extensive appendices and the bibliography and index will present ample suggestions for further investigation of the many areas of possible interest presented in the book, such as architecture, garden design, painting, music, science and politics."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this book, taken from Thomas Goffe's unwieldy com plimentary poem to Constantijn Huygens, expresses some part of my own debt to him. Seven years ago, in search of a key to Anglo Dutch relations in the late Renaissance, I was rewarded by this gigantic Huygens, because of his close Connections with English life and his deep involvement with the life of bis own country apparently the perfect guide to the difficult and often tedious territory of Anglo-Dutch cultural relations. To the student attacking a new subject, wealth of documen tation means much: Huygens left behind him eight volumes of poetry, six volumes of letters, together with many published books, pamphlets and notes, rich in the material of his English 1 journeys. However illuminating at the start of an investigation, this wealth soon proved itself an embarrassment. After a little I was plunged into a cloud of unknowing, feverishly striking out in too many directions, following too many leads, amassing too many notes on too many subjects. For Huygens was almost too good an exemplar of his time: his interests were too wide to comprehend, his manifold function too difficult to grasp. No Rum pelstiltskin came at night to help, no friendly ants to clear away the mountains of grain.

Book excerpt: Constantijn Huygens was a poet, composer and connoisseur of art and the classics. He was also secretary and confidant to three princes of Orange for 62 years. Hofwijck was also the place where Constantijn's son Christiaan spent a significant part of his life. Christiaan Huygens was a member of the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge and became one of the greatest inventors and scientists. At the end of his life, at Hofwijck, he wrote Cosmotheoros, his magnum opus on the universe. At Huygens's Hofwijck we look at the seventeenth century through the eyes of these two versatile men. With Constantijn and Christiaan, the story is about literature, art, music, politics, the House of Orange, science and life at a seventeenth-century country estate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1690, Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) published Traité de la Lumière, containing his renowned wave theory of light. It is considered a landmark in seventeenth-century science, for the way Huygens mathematized the corpuscular nature of light and his probabilistic conception of natural knowledge. This book discusses the development of Huygens' wave theory, reconstructing the winding road that eventually led to Traité de la Lumière. For the first time, the full range of manuscript sources is taken into account. In addition, the development of Huygens' thinking on the nature of light is put in the context of his optics as a whole, which was dominated by his lifelong pursuit of theoretical and practical dioptrics. In so doing, this book offers the first account of the development of Huygens' mathematical analysis of lenses and telescopes and its significance for the origin of the wave theory of light. As Huygens applied his mathematical proficiency to practical issues pertaining to telescopes – including trying to design a perfect telescope by means of mathematical theory – his dioptrics is significant for our understanding of seventeenth-century relations between theory and practice. With this full account of Huygens' optics, this book sheds new light on the history of seventeenth-century optics and the rise of the new mathematical sciences, as well as Huygens' oeuvre as a whole. Students of the history of optics, of early mathematical physics, and the Scientific Revolution, will find this book enlightening.

Book excerpt: Lyric Address in Dutch Literature, 1250-1800 provides accessible and comprehensive readings of ten Dutch lyrical poems, discussing each poem's historical context, revealing its political or ideological framing, religious elements, or the self-representational interests of the poet. The book focuses on how the use of the speaker's "I" creates distance or proximity to the social context of the time. Close, detailed analysis of rhetorical techniques, such as the use of the apostrophe, illuminates the ways in which poetry reveals tensions in society.

Book excerpt: In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic was the centre of the world trade in exotic drugs and spices. They were sought after both as medicines, and as luxury objects for the bourgeois class, giving rise to a medical and moral anxiety in the Republic. This ambivalent view on exotic drugs is the theme of the poetry of Joannes Six van Chandelier (1620-1695). Six, who himself ran the drug shop 'The Gilded Unicorn' in Amsterdam, addresses a number of exotic medicines in his poems, such as musk, incense, the miracle drug theriac, Egyptian mumia, and even the blood of Charles I of England. In Dangerous Drugs, these texts are studied for the first time. The study shows how Six, through a process of self-presentation as a sober and restrained merchant, but also as a penitent sinner, thirsting for God's grace, links early modern drug abuse to different desires, such as lust, avarice, pride and curiosity. The book shows also how an early modern debate on exotic drugs contributed to an important shift in early modern natural science, from a drug lore based on mythical and fabulous concepts, to a botany based on observation and systematic examination.
