Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burden-Sharing Dilemma examines the conditions under which the United States is willing and able to pressure its allies to assume more responsibility for their own defense. The United States has a mixed track record of encouraging allied burden-sharing—while it has succeeded or failed in some cases, it has declined to do so at all in others. This variation, Brian D. Blankenship argues, is because the United States tailors its burden-sharing pressure in accordance with two competing priorities: conserving its own resources and preserving influence in its alliances. Although burden-sharing enables great power patrons like the United States to lower alliance costs, it also empowers allies to resist patron influence. Blankenship identifies three factors that determine the severity of this burden-sharing dilemma and how it is managed: the latent military power of allies, the shared external threat environment, and the level of a patron's resource constraints. Through case studies of US alliances formed during the Cold War, he shows that a patron can mitigate the dilemma by combining assurances of protection with threats of abandonment and by exercising discretion in its burden-sharing pressure. Blankenship's findings dismantle assumptions that burden-sharing is always desirable but difficult to obtain. Patrons, as the book reveals, can in fact be reluctant to seek burden-sharing, and attempts to pass defense costs to allies can often be successful. At a time when skepticism of alliance benefits remains high and global power shifts threaten longstanding pacts, The Burden-Sharing Dilemma recalls and reconceives the value of burden-sharing and alliances.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With most of the Christian world honoring Sunday as their day of worship, the question of its origin becomes important. Over the past hundred years much has been written about the use of the week among ancient pagan peoples. However, little has been done to compile such historical material into an easily accessible book for the general public. Robert Leo Odom for years has conducted special research on the Sabbath-Sunday question. In Sunday in Roman Paganism, he leads readers through the pages of history showing the rise of the planetary week and its day of the Sun in the heathenism of the Roman world during the early centuries of the Christian era. This book is not a capsulated history of Sunday as a church festival, but rather the history of the planetary week as it was known and used in the pagan world, and to show whether or not its day of the Sun was then regarded by pagans as being sacred to their Sun-god.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic, Vol. 4 of 18: Or a History of the United States of America, the Administrations, From the Monarchic Colonial Days to the Present Times Thomas Jefferson was accustomed to put the writing of the Declaration of Independence at the head of all his performances, and believed that this deed alone was enough to keep his name forever green in the memory of his countrymen. Washington's great and beneficial services, and extraordinary influence over the American people in shaping their national destiny, attached to him the imperishable distinction of "Father of his Country." The earnest, honorable, and influential part Mr. Madison took in the success of the Constitution and the establishment of the National Government gained for him, quite widely in the political literature of his times, the honor of being the "Father of the Constitution." However doubtful may be deemed the propriety of this application to any one man, there can be no disputing about the general fact touching the great importance of Mr. Madison's services in the establishment of this Government. If his influence in Virginia in leading to the adoption of the Constitution was not next to that of Washington, his unceasing, wise, and persevering efforts to that end were much greater. Book excerpt: Nationalism has played an important role in the cultural and intellectual discourse of modernity that emerged in Iran from the late nineteenth century to the present, promoting new formulations of collective identity and advocating a new and more active role for the broad strata of the public in politics. The essays in this volume seek to shed light on the construction of nationalism in Iran in its many manifestations; cultural, social, political and ideological, by exploring on-going debates on this important and progressive topic.
