Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of Plato, Book X: Edited as an Introduction to the Study of Plato's Philosophy The Editor feels that he must justify himself to those who may use this book, as well for producing what is intended to serve as an Introduction to the study of Plato's Philosophy, as for the particular selection made. Dr. J owett in the preface which he has written to Mr. Purves' Selections from Plato discourages the pre mature study of philosophy. Sooner or later, how ever, the higher classical education leads those who follow after it into the loftier regions of metaphysics, where a guide or, in the last resource, a guide-book is indispensable. It is in the humbler capacity that this book offers itself, for so wide is the ground covered by Platonic literature 1 that, undirected, the explorer may soon lose himself. Nor is the Editor acquainted with any other book which definitely proposes to help the beginner. He could have wished that some one of riper knowledge had undertaken to do so, but he feels himself to possess for the task at least one qualification - a due estimate of his own powers as compared with great Platonists, past and present, which has constantly dissuaded departure from the beaten track. Book excerpt: The Republic is one of the earliest political treatises ever written and Plato's most remarkable work. Through a fictional dialogue with Socrates, Plato examines the nature of justice, the character of the city-state, and what it means to be a just man. Plato argued that power corrupts and the only way to protect against this was through the rule of philosopher kings. In The Republic he also grapples with the questions of our senses and reality through the famous 'Allegory of the Cave'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is an excellent book – highly intelligent, interesting and original. Expressing high philosophy in a readable form without trivialising it is a very difficult task and McAleer manages the task admirably. Plato is, yet again, intensely topical in the chaotic and confused world in which we are now living. Philip Allott, Professor Emeritus of International Public Law at Cambridge University This book is a lucid and accessible companion to Plato’s Republic, throwing light upon the text’s arguments and main themes, placing them in the wider context of the text’s structure. In its illumination of the philosophical ideas underpinning the work, it provides readers with an understanding and appreciation of the complexity and literary artistry of Plato’s Republic. McAleer not only unpacks the key overarching questions of the text – What is justice? And Is a just life happier than an unjust life? – but also highlights some fascinating, overlooked passages which contribute to our understanding of Plato’s philosophical thought. Plato’s 'Republic': An Introduction offers a rigorous and thought-provoking analysis of the text, helping readers navigate one of the world’s most influential works of philosophy and political theory. With its approachable tone and clear presentation, it constitutes a welcome contribution to the field, and will be an indispensable resource for philosophy students and teachers, as well as general readers new to, or returning to, the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a distinguished philosopher offers a comprehensive interpretation of Plato's most controversial dialogue. Treating the Republic as a unity and focusing on the dramatic form as the presentation of the argument, Stanley Rosen challenges earlier analyses of the Republic (including the ironic reading of Leo Strauss and his disciples) and argues that the key to understanding the dialogue is to grasp the author's intention in composing it, in particular whether Plato believed that the city constructed in the Republic is possible and desirable. Rosen demonstrates that the fundamental principles underlying the just city are theoretically attractive but that the attempt to enact them in practice leads to conceptual incoherence and political disaster. The Republic, says Rosen, is a vivid illustration of the irreconcilability of philosophy and political practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2000, this translation of one of the great works of Western political thought is based on the assumption that when Plato chose the dialogue form for his writing, he intended these dialogues to sound like conversations - although conversations of a philosophical sort. In addition to a vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, the student and general reader will find many aids to comprehension in this volume: an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the body of the text; an analytical summary of the work's content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of important events; and a guide to further reading. The result is an accomplished and accessible edition of this seminal work, suitable for philosophers and classicists as well as historians of political thought at all levels.
