Book Synopsis The Durham Report and British Policy by : Ged Martin
Download or read book The Durham Report and British Policy written by Ged Martin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1972-11-09 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1838 Lord Melbourne's Whig government in Britain sent the radical Lord Durham to Canada as Governor-General to deal with a colony in the aftermath of a rebellion. Durham's vanity and arrogance made him a poor choice for the post, and he resigned a few months later after the government had been forced to overrule him for exceeding his powers. After his return to Britain he wrote his Report on the Affairs of British North America - and its unauthorized publication in the Times caused a sensation. This report - the famous 'Durham Report' - has been seen as the starting point of the British tradition of colonial self-rule leading through the Statute of Westminster of 1931 to the independent self-governing Commonwealth of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rosanna Mullins Leprohon’s The Manor House of De Villerai, A Tale of Canada Under the French Dominion is a literary milestone—it is the first Canadian historical novel, in English or French, to rewrite the conquest of the French Canadians from the perspective of history’s vanquished. Its revisionary account of the fall of New France is framed around a love triangle between the heroine, Blanche De Villerai, her childhood betrothed, Gustave de Montarville, and Blanche’s servant, Rose Lauzon. Popular in its original serial publication and once widely reprinted in French translation, but now out of print, The Manor House of De Villerai is a long-overlooked Canadian classic. In addition to the text originally serialized in the Family Herald magazine, this Broadview Edition includes extensive documents on the novel’s reception, Leprohon’s historical sources and literary precedents, and maps and art from the period.

Download or read book French in Canada written by Maeve Conrick and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses comprehensively the complex linguistic situation in Canada focusing particularly on the position of the French language at both national and provincial levels. Language issues in Canada are of great interest to linguists and sociolinguists for many reasons, not least because of Canada's policy of official bilingualism (Official Languages Act, 1969). The authors address a wide range of topics of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of French and Linguistics as well as readers with a specialist interest in Canadian or Quebec Studies. Individual chapters discuss the historical background to the presence of French in Canada, language policy and planning at federal and provincial levels, the changing linguistic landscape of Canada in the twenty-first century, the multilingual community, language contact, code-switching, immersion education and the language of the L2 speaker, the dynamics of French in Canada, language variation and change. The status of French in Canada is of relevance to all researchers with an interest in multilingualism, a crucial issue in this era of globalisation. The authors bring their expertise as linguists to bear on a subject which is of considerable importance internationally as well as within Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unfulfilled Union Garth Stevenson examines such topics as the origins and objectives of Confederation and the BNA Act of 1867, the interpretation of Canada's federal constitution by the courts, the impact of economic regionalism and Quebec nationalism, financial relations between the federal and provincial levels of government, the consequences of federalism for economic policy, the sources of federal-provincial conflicts and the means to resolve them, and the lengthy but inconclusive efforts to reform the constitution through federal-provincial agreement, particularly since Quebec's Quiet Revolution in the 1960s. Although institutional factors such as the defects of the original constitution and the sometimes questionable interpretations of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council are given due attention, Stevenson emphasizes the political economy of Canada, including its relationship with the United States, and the vitality of Quebec nationalism as the major reasons Canada has not achieved the same level of centralization and stability as other federations in the industrialized world. This updated edition of Unfulfilled Union includes a new introduction that discusses the extensive changes that have taken place in Canadian federalism since that time.
