Hence a brief resume of the important literature will be given, no attempt being made to discuss any conclusions, as it is desired to present the problems later in the light of my own experimentation. The whole subject of diseases of bones and joints is undergoing a rapid development, and is being transferred from the realm of empiricism to that of scientific study. While we must avoid going too fast, and taking up every idea without sufficient supporting evidence, we must not lag behind with those who complacently regard almost all arthropathies and osteopathies as manifestations of "rheumatism," and treat them in a manner that may be named most charitably as routine. The work represents an effort to present the subject as briefly as possible, dealing with the various diseases, in the matter of space, very much as their relative frequency. It is intended primarily for the general practitioner, but, contrary to custom, instead of furnishing that long suffering and very important person with a mass of detail, and with many methods of treatment from which he may choose, attempts to lay down broad general principles, with the evidence on which they are based, and then to show how these principles may be applied. In other words, it demands as little faith as possible on the part of the reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The end of the tibia has been hollowed out to receive the convex end Of the femur. This hollow has been deepened by the production of new bone. Anteriorly and posteriorly, on the tibia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Bones It is important to remember that osteitis deformans is almost invariably seen at the time of [life when the incidence of malignant disease is the greatest. The duration of malignant disease is at most a few years while in the case of - osteitis deformans life is often prolonged twenty or even thirty years after the development of bone deformity. That the coexistence of the two diseases is common must be admitted but SO far as any definite etiologic relationship between the processes in the two diseases is concerned we have no evidence. But under circumstances of disease, its sensibility often becomes wonderfully ex alted. Thus I have witnessed the manifestation of pain as acute from the penetration of an inflamed bone by a saw or trephine as from the incisions of inflamed soft parts. We Observe, moreover, the granula: tions from diseased bone participating in' the morbid sensibility of' its tissue. Such being the vital properties of bone, it IS very liable to disease and its diseases are many, when compared with the diseases of muscle, tendon, or nerve, or indeed of any other organ or tissue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Modern Methods of Treating Fractures But in this, as in every other department of science, there has dawned a new era of doubt and scepticism about Old axioms on the one hand, and of the building up of new methods, founded upon first principles, on the other. Modern surgery - that is to say, the aseptic system - Opened the door to so vast a field Of absolutely new ground in dealing with abdominal diseases, that the subject of fractures has perhaps lagged behind, and probably in this department the common practice Of today is more like that of a thousand years ago than in any other. This was done by moistening it with gasoline upon a towel and then pouring thin celloidin over it. This was either hardened in alcohol or allowed to harden in the air. The platen was then immersed in benzole until the specimens dropped off, to be followed by another change of benzol to remove the excess of balsam that might still remain, carbol xylol to clear the celloidin, xylol, placed on a slide and covered with xylol balsam and cover-slip. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Human Skeleton: Including the Joints In lecturing on the Skeleton my practice has been, instead of giving a detailed account of the several parts, to request the members of the class, each day, to get up the descriptive anatomy of certain bones, with the aid of some work on osteology. On the subsequent day, I tested their acquirements by viva voce examination, and endeavoured to supply deficiencies and to correct errors. I also added such information - physical, physiological, pathological, and practical - as I had been able to gather, from my own observation and researches, and which was likely to be useful and to excite an interest in the subject. The additional information, thus collected, forms, in great part, the material of the present volume; which does not profess to give a regular description of the bones, and is not, therefore, intended as a substitute for any of the existing manuals of anatomy; but is rather, supplementary to them. The description of the joints has been made more complete than that of the bones; because it is less fully given in other works; and because an accurate knowledge of the structure and peculiar forms of the joints is essential to a correct knowledge of their movements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Diseases of Bones and Joints Acquire knowledge, however, by this kind of teaching is a slow process, so tedious that few students appreciate the advantage of watching a patient day by day to his recovery, or to the examination which is made after death. Nevertheless, there can be no question that experience acquired in this way is the only true foundation upon which a young medical man can safely rely during his professional career. My aim has been to lead my pupils, by the exercise of their sight, touch, and hearing, to gain a practical knowledge of surgery, which in systematic lectures or books they can only imperfectly receive from the description of others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatment of Fractures of Long Bones, by Simple Extension If the surgeon has all the knowledge, and not the means, to purchase the complicated and increasing complications of surgi cal appliances, he is like a ship without ballast, or like a carpen ter without his tools. And here I would enquire how many young practitioners have the means to purchase mechanical appliances for the treatment of fractures indiscriminately, in order that they may be able to compete with old practitioners, or be prepared for any emergency? It has been said that accident makes the man. Would accident make the man if he had not the knowledge to take advantage or cir'cumstances? I can conceive how accident might give us wealth; but accident, developing wealth or social position, and accident developing one's mental and scientific resources, are two things quite separate and distinct. I would ask of what service are splints? What office do they perform in the treatment of fractures? Authors say they sup port the bone while union is being effected. I would ask, how many fractures of the long bones can be placed in apposition without the use of extension, particularly in oblique fractures, or where there has been great injury to soft parts, and overlapping of the bones? I know of few exceptions. The true use of splints should be to keep the fractured ends of the bone in apposition, by placing the muscles on the stretch, and thereby making them (the muscles) the true splints. The experiments of Reid and others show that muscles are not susceptible of being stretched beyond their normal capacity; that when so stretched, they are capable of bearing great lateral pressure without much deflection; and any attempt at undue lateral pressue [results in rupture of the muscular substance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Cooper's Paper on Big-Bone Lick, Kentucky Big-bone Lick, so celebrated for the remains of unknown animals that have been found buried there, is situated in a small valley in Boone county, in the northern part of Kentucky, within two miles of the left bank of the Ohio, about half way down; eighty miles distant, northerly, from Lexington, and twenty south-westerly from Cincinnatti, in Ohio. By licks are meant, in the western country, springy places, naturally affording salt, in search of which, the various species of herbivorous animals, both wild and domestic, resort to them in great numbers. At Big-bone Lick, the salt is deposited from numerous springs, rising through the soil over a surface of several acres. There are likewise several streams of fresh water, that enter the valley from different sides; and these uniting, form a small river, which, taking a southerly course, discharges itself at the distance of twelve miles, into the Ohio. The quantity of fossil bones which appear to have been brought together at this place, and deposited within a very small area, is truly wonderful. An authentic account of all that have been found during the last ninety years, such as might enable us to make some estimate of the number of individuals, at least of the larger animals, whose remains were here intermingled, as well as to form some probable conjecture respecting the circumstances under which they perished, and to which they owe their assemblage in this spot, would be at this day most desirable to possess. But it is too late to hope for this. Quantities almost exceeding belief, and of which no record has been kept, have within that period been carried off, and dispersed, no one can now tell whither.
