After more than fifty years of automobile production and a commitment to manufacture the Chevrolet Cruze until 2021, the facility was recently "unallocated" by GM, as the company shifts its focus toward overseas manufacturing and the production of electric and autonomous vehicles. For many, this meant uprooting their families and giving up the support of a close-knit community. Those who turned down transfers to GM plants in other states lost their income, pensions, and benefits. The Last Cruze, which sets out to amplify the voices of the auto workers in Lordstown, introduces a new chapter to Frazier's work in investigating labor, family, community, and the working class. Exhibited at the Renaissance Society in 2019, this body of work includes over sixty photographs, alongside the written stories of the workers, and was staged within an installation that echoes the structure of the plant's assembly line. This substantial catalogue includes extensive documentation of the work and introduces new essays and dialogues by contributors including Coco Fusco, David Harvey, Werner Lange, Lynn Nottage, Julia Reichert, Benjamin Young, and members of the local chapter of the United Auto Workers.

Book excerpt: If the closure of Modernist painting is taken as the closure of painting itself, then under the aegis of postmodernism, painting's history is a finite collection of fully legible styles up for being quoted. In this circumstance, the question arises of whether there exists such a thing as an abstract painting. Judging from Morris's work, the answer is a resounding "Yes!" Her shapes, lines, colors, gestures, and surfaces function as an Ur or proto language of abstraction in which one can discern the compositional logic of Stella's black paintings, an isolated Pollock-like splatter, or a Hoffmanesque approach to the juxtaposition of color. This catalogue, the first monograph on Morris's work, contains essays by Diedrich Diederichsen and Stephen Westfall. Westfall examines Morris's relationship to contemporary urban material culture, tracing the redemptive transformation of the cheap, grimy and gauche that occurs in her paintings. Diederichsen locates the place of Morris's work within the rocky history of abstract painting, concluding ultimately that Morris's practice points out a way around the polarization of modernism's and postmodernism's constructions of the genre.

Book excerpt: The exhibition of Gerber's work at The Renaissance Society in 1992 marked the culmination of a ten-year period in which Gerber persistently painted the same opaque, monochromatic still-life over and over, in a bold artistic assertion that seeing is not believing but simply perceiving. This catalog is the first monograph publication of Gerber's work, and documents the artist's installations of these paintings at various international exhibitions, including Documenta 9 in 1992, and Robbin Lockett Gallery in Chicago in 1988. At the Society's exhibition, Gerber hung a single row of his paintings abutted end to end on a wall crossing the entire gallery space.
