Book excerpt: This project was about removing heavy metal, Pb and Zn using activated carbon and to investigate the effect of activated carbon dosage and pH of heavy metal solution during the experiment. In the experiment, the effect of different particle size of activated carbon also being studied. The experiment was using different doses of activated carbon to investigate the removal of heavy metal. It was carried by adding different doses of activated carbon to stock solution. Besides, it was also tested at different value of pH, which was done by adding an amount of activated carbon that gives the best performance into different pH of stock solution to get the maximum heavy metal removal. The powdered and granular activated carbon (GAC) used to see the different effect. To get the maximum effect, the solution was well mixed using the orbital shaker for 1 hour at 30oC. Samples were taken after it mixed and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). From the result, pH 10 gives the highest removal percentage of the heavy metal which is 92.8% for zinc ion and 93.36% for plumbum ion. From the result also, the removal percentage of heavy metal ion was highest when 5g of activated carbon was added to both simulated waste water. The removal percentage was 47.2% for zinc ion and 62.68% for plumbum ion. The result also shows that the powdered activated carbon (PAC) can increase the percentage of heavy metal ion removal compare to GAC. The removal percentage was 95.2% when the PAC was used while 53.74% for GAC. As conclusion, we know that activated carbon dosage and pH totally influence the removal of heavy metal ion.-Author.

Oil and petrochemical industries produce considerable amounts of heavy metals that finds its way to water sources such as rivers, lakes, sea, and ground water in addition to soil . Biological treatment units are unable to remove these metals since they are non-biodegradable. Considerable attention had been given for the treatment of heavy metals in recent years. North oil refineries company in Baiji suffer from the presence of many heavy metals in the discharged wastewater from biological treatment unit. The concentration of many of these heavy metals concentrations exceed the allowable concentrations according to the Iraqi limits. The present work is a trial to treat Copper, Manganeze, and Zinc from a synthetic wastewater using activated carbon. The study proved that these metals can be removed completely. However the breakthrough and exhaustion times for Zinc are lower than that of Copper and Manganese. The study proved also that adsorption capacity is not a pure property of activated carbon, but it depends on the operating conditions and the type of adsorbent and adsorbate and their characteristics.

Book excerpt: In this Book, The utilization of agricultural waste to produce valuable products has been investigated to minimize serious public health risks from exposure to dangerous fumes that come from burning the agricultural wastes in open fields. In this study, activated carbon produced from cotton stalks was examined for the removal of target heavy metal contaminants from water and wastewater. Adsorption studies conducted in completely mixed batch reactors and continuous flow columns showed a good affinity of the produced activated carbon to remove heavy metals, namely lead, cadmium and copper from aqueous solutions compared to other commercial adsorbents. The highest adsorption capacity was for lead, followed by copper and then cadmium. Multicomponent metal adsorption experiments indicated a competition for the available surface sites. Adsorption capacities in the mixture were reduced from their single-solute values for all metals.

Book excerpt: Heavy metals, such as lead, mercury, zinc, aluminum, arsenic, nickel, chromium, and cobalt, are the common pollutants present within the environment from various natural and Industrial sources. Synthetic dyes are commonly used for dyeing and printing in a variety of industries. The traditional methods for the removal of heavy metals and dyes from wastewater are chemical precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, membrane processes, and evaporation which require high capital investment and running costs. Activated carbon prepared from agricultural wastes and its by-products are good alternative sources for adsorption because they are low-cost, renewable sources with high carbon, volatile contents, low ash, and reasonable hardness. The preparation means of activated carbon are physical and chemical methods. The important advantages of chemical activation over physical activation are the process that can be accomplished even at lower temperatures and the yield obtained in chemical activation tends to be greater since burn-off char can be avoided. In this chapter, the removal of heavy metals and dyes, using activated carbon, which was prepared by using agricultural waste, biomass was presented. This helps the researchers to accumulate knowledge.

Book excerpt: Part of Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water Set - buy all five books together to save over 30%! The EU Drinking Water Directive sets a range of standards for metals and related substances in drinking water, many of which are concerned with health protection. A number of these standards are very stringent and require compliance to be assessed at the point of use. Because of the difficulties associated with monitoring, historic practices in many countries have concentrated on the quality of water within the distribution network. As a result, the magnitude of problems with some metals and related substances in drinking water is not fully appreciated in all European countries, and the extent and nature of corrective actions differ widely. This Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment describes drinking water standards and regulations, and explains the impact of a range of water treatment processes on metal levels in drinking water. Its objectives are to provide a basis for assessing the extent of problems and to identify appropriate water treatment options. The Guide provides a reasoned guide to selection of key water treatment processes. Each chapter focuses on a specific water treatment process and has been written by experts in that particular process. Best Practice Guide on Metals Removal From Drinking Water By Treatment provides practice-based knowledge for water engineers and scientists in large and small water utilities, regulatory agencies, health agencies and local municipalities (from cities through to small rural communities). It also supports university level teaching in degree schemes that relate to water management. This Guide is one of a series produced by the International Water Association’s Specialist Group on Metals and Related Substances in Drinking Water. The series is an up-to-date compilation of a range of scientific, engineering, regulatory and operational issues concerned with the control and removal of metals from drinking water.

Book excerpt: The presence of heavy metals in wastewater is known to cause severe damage to aquatic life, beside the fact that these metals kill microorganism during biological treatment of wastewater with a consequent time delay of the treatment process. Chromium is one of the major heavy metals present in wastewater which has toxic effect and is a strong oxidizing agent capable of being absorbed through the skin. Palm oil mills in Malaysia produce about 4.3 million tones of shell and the significant problems in the palm fruit processing is managing the wastes generated during the process. The palm shell can be converted into useful products such as activated carbon. So, this method will reduce industrial wastewater problem and will bring benefits to society. Hence, this research aims to use activated carbon produced from palm shell to remove Chromium from industrial wastewater. Pyrolysis was applied for the preparation of activated carbon from palm shell using furnace at 600oC. The treatment of activated carbon was carried out by oxidizing it with sulphuric acid and coating with chitosan. Two adsorbents namely Palm Shell Activated Carbon (PSAC) and Palm Shell Activated Carbon coated with Chitosan (PSACC) were used to remove chromium from aqueous solution. The effects of pH of the solution, adsorbent dosage, agitation speed, and contact time on adsorption of chromium were studied. The experimental results proved that the chromium removal efficiency of PSACC was better compared PSAC. Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were used to analyze the adsorption of chromium from aqueous solution. The results concluded that Freundlich isotherm captured the adsorption of Chromium better compared to Langmuir isotherm as the former have higher correlation regression coefficient.
