Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Pastor Micah Whitfield and his omnipotent and omniscient treeing walker coonhound named Douglas. Micah will gradually discover that Douglas has supernatural powers as endowed to him by the Almighty. Douglas is on a mission from the Almighty. He is to guide and mold Pastor Micah into a fit hellfire-and-brimstone pastor. Douglas has his work cut out for him as Micah is very reluctant to perform his pastoral duties. Douglas is the real pastor of the church. Douglas writes the sermons, leads communion services, leads Bible studies, and does most of all the Christian counseling as Micah is inept at all of them. In exchange, Douglas is rewarded with porterhouse steaks and cheesecake. Eventually, Douglas becomes known as the Hell Dog. He frequently gives guided tours of hell. Occasionally, he gives a tour of the heavenly realm or Reprobate City. As Douglas and Micah become inseparable, the reader discovers that this "perfect canine" has some flaws. He frequently gets Micah into trouble in the church, on vacation, and during their demonstrations and marches on the capital city and Washington City. Micah is always getting arrested. Douglas is always there to break him out of jail. They frequently become fugitives from injustice. On the other hand, Douglas sometimes does some pro bono work for the police department. He wears a badge that says, "Deputized Outlaw." Just before vacation, Micah is impeached by the congregation. Douglas gives a long-winded dissertation about salvation and the Almighty. He even takes the entire congregation on a tour of hell. When he is done, Micah has the congregation on his side. This lays the groundwork for putting words into action. The entire congregation is in a "demonstration mode."

Book excerpt: At the age of six, Zachary Bolitho discovers that his very kind, small town, neighbors are actually the Monarch's grandson and family. By the age of seven, Zachary has lost his father, met the Queen, and become an assistant caregiver to his little brother, Austin, and Austin's same-age best friend, David, who just happens to be a royal prince. When a national tragedy strikes seven years later, Zachary finds himself in a role he is hardly prepared for, placating senior government officials while trying to protect young David. Going purely on guesswork and instinct, Zachary tries hard to do what he thinks is right while at the same time working to assist a much younger David to do the same. Dealing with cranky, older advisors, a lack of clear direction, plus a traitorous and Machiavellian uncle, Zachary struggles to make sense of what has happened while trying to prepare his young friend for the most important role of his life.

Book excerpt: Even if you are agnostic or hard-core atheist there is a dazzling, thought-expanding, bright side to religion you may have overlooked. Living a spiritual life in the tradition of the Jewish faith, does not mean mindless adherence to outdated dogma. Judaism, instead, can be a source of exhilarating wonder, an inspiration to justice, and an impetus to ever increasing knowledge. Nowadays, even many who profess to be the most pious among us realize that when asked, What is God?, they must answer logically, even scientifically, to be persuasive. Theyre aware that any religion, to be convincing, other than to die-hard adherents, can not be at odds with reason and blindly insist only it speaks the truth. The field, therefore, is wide open. Each of us can attempt to journey towards a concept of God that makes sense, celebrates the discoveries of science, and will, hopefully, imbue the traveler with wonderment at the astonishing beauty in the world that too often lays hidden from us. Join Michael Grossman in his journey to the heart of Judaism, which places much more emphasis on "what people do" than on "what they believe," and in the process, an understanding of all the worlds great faiths.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man who went by the name of Jay Cee lived in a small town in Pennsylvania. He worked as a carpenters helper at a job that paid less than a dollar an hour above minimum wage. Teaching Sunday school was a passion of his. He arrived in Detroit one day to attend a four-day religious retreat along with twenty thousand other Christian believers from several midwestern states. Due to an incredible set of circumstances, he found himself at the Detroit Lions training facility in Allen Park, Michigan, a nearby suburb of Detroit. In an even more bizarre twist of fate, he found himself practicing with the Detroit Lions football team at the position of quarterback. He dazzled everyone on the field, especially the head coach. His pinpoint passing, his ball handling, and his elusiveness in the pocket were nothing short of amazing! However, he had absolutely no desire to play professional football. He was very satisfied living and working in that small town and teaching Sunday school there. No amount of money offered to him could make him change his mind. One evening, Jay Cee attended a class at the retreat during which the instructor told them, God wants us to live up to our potential by using the talents He has given us. Sometimes, we have to step outside of our comfort zones before we can recognize what those talents are. That made him realize that perhaps living in a small town and working for minimum wage was not his destiny; maybe it was time for him to broaden his horizons.

Book excerpt: The time has come, Edward C. Zaragoza argues, to lay a new foundation for how we understand ordained ministry. He begins by reminding us that, on the basis of the priesthood of all believers, clergy are ministers with, rather than servants of, the congregation. Building on the horizontal nature of this relationship, he suggests that we begin to think of a friendship model of ministry. In this model the authority of the ordained arises not from the quality of their service to the congregation (a service which can too easily lead to subjugation or superiority), but from the fact that the church has set them apart to minister with and among them, carrying on their own ministry of prayer, proclamation, and teaching, in ways that enhance and facilitate the ministry of the whole people of God. In this timely and constructive theological analysis, Zaragoza offers a new paradigm for understanding the function of ordained ministry in the life of the congregation. After presenting a critique of the "servant leadership model" and explaining the risks inherent in it, the author presents a "friendship model" of ordained ministry and explains how this model arises from and takes place within the context of the whole people of God.
