They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dis passionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all modern students of religion of any repute. But they also believe that it is neces sary to set the practical side of each system in living relation to the beliefs and the literature, and that, in this regard, the close and direct contact which they have each had with Indian religious life ought to prove a source of valuable light. For, until a clear understanding has been gained of the practical influence exerted by the habits of worship, by the practice of the ascetic, devotional, or occult discipline, by the social organization and by the family system, the real impact of the faith upon the life of the individual and the community cannot be estimated and, without the advantage of extended personal intercourse, a trustworthy account of the religious experience of a community can scarcely be achieved by even the most careful student. Both editors and writers desire to work in the spirit of the best modern science, looking only for the truth. But, while doing so and seeking to bring to the interpretation of the systems under review such imagination and sympathy as characterize the best study in the domain of religion to-day, they believe they are able to shed on their work fresh light drawn from the close religious intercourse which they have each had with the people who live by the faiths herein described and their study of the relevant literature has in every instance been largely supplemented by persistent question ing of those likely to be able to give information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Religious Thought in Modern India Only twice in all the gospels are we told that the Son of Man was taken by surprise. And the two things that astonished Him were the faith of a heathen, and the want of faith of His own people in His own home. It was a' man of alien race and civilisation who opened up to the thought of the chosen people of God the riches of a faith which they had supposed peculiarly their own. We shall do well to remember this, for we live in an age When those whom we are accustomed to call heathen are often secret disciples of the Lord J esus. Excerpt: ...the pot were uncovered, some one might burn his hands in it, and if by chance a piece of burnt skin fell in the pot, the fire would become as unholy as the fire that burns a dead man!) But this covered fire that is brought is holy, and is called the Pavaka or sanctifier.1 Sandal-wood paste is sprinkled on the edge of the altar and on the fire itself, and flowers are put beside it. Next, three blades of darbha-grass dipped in clarified butter are thrown into the fire, and water is poured round it. At this point the worshipper stops for a moment and meditates on Agni, who has four horns, three legs, two heads, and seven hands, and then he again offers sandal-wood paste and flowers to the fire. Rice is now ordered from the kitchen, and the worshipper sprinkles water over the rice and sanctifies it by repeating mentally the gayatri mantra, and then pouring over it clarified butter. Out of this rice the worshipper proceeds to make five little balls, each the size of a marble. The first is offered to Brahma, and as the worshipper casts it into the fire, he says: 1 It maybe interesting here to note the names of the other fires that we have either studied already or shall later study. The fire at sraddha is called the Aditi, the mother of gods and the aunt of the demons; the marriage fire is the Yojaka, the uniter; the fire lit at a house-warming is the Satamaiigala, the bringer of hundreds of auspicious things; the fire lit at the funeral pyre is the Kravydd, the eater of human flesh; and the fire lit to propitiate the planets is the Varada, the fulfiller of desire. 'Brahmane Svdhd and then: 'This is for his sake and not for mine'. The remaining four balls are successively offered in the same way to Prajdpati, to Grihyd (the goddess who guards the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Conquest of India India contains about one fifth of the human race, and missionary work carried on in such a vast empire, and directed by the leading Churches of the Protestant world leads the student into fields of observation and inquiry hardly second to any others in the world. To attempt to write in a few brief. Chapters a sketch of a. Region which practically constitutes a world in itself, and todo this from a missionary view-point and in a form suitable for young readers, must inevitably prove to be a most perplexing task. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of India: Brahmanism and Buddhism I'he study of religions outside of Christianity has now overcome many of the prejudices which hindered its earlier growth. It has no longer to contend with the suspicion that the effort to understand other religions will make us attach less value to our own. On the contrary, the tendency of the study of religions is seen more and more to strengthen the hold of Christianity upon us. The student of this science is led to see very clearly how all men need religion and have provided themselves in one way or another with access to'the powers above them. But it happens very rarely that even the most sympathetic study of a foreign religion leads anyone to prefer it to his own. In contemplating other faiths, we do, it is true, become aware that some features of Christianity are stronger than others and do more to qualify it to spread over the world. We have to distinguish between the essence of Christianity, in which lies the secret of its power, and its accidental features. That surely must confirm and not weaken the tie that binds us to Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
