Book Synopsis Religion and the American Revolution by : Katherine Carté
Download or read book Religion and the American Revolution written by Katherine Carté and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of the eighteenth century, British protestantism was driven neither by the primacy of denominations nor by fundamental discord between them. Instead, it thrived as part of a complex transatlantic system that bound religious institutions to imperial politics. As Katherine Carte argues, British imperial protestantism proved remarkably effective in advancing both the interests of empire and the cause of religion until the war for American independence disrupted it. That Revolution forced a reassessment of the role of religion in public life on both sides of the Atlantic. Religious communities struggled to reorganize within and across new national borders. Religious leaders recalibrated their relationships to government. If these shifts were more pronounced in the United States than in Britain, the loss of a shared system nonetheless mattered to both nations. Sweeping and explicitly transatlantic, Religion and the American Revolution demonstrates that if religion helped set the terms through which Anglo-Americans encountered the imperial crisis and the violence of war, it likewise set the terms through which both nations could imagine the possibilities of a new world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Opinions and Character of Washington The author would here give a brief explanation of the motives which have led him to engage in the work now submitted to the public. The character of Washington, on which time has fixed its authentic and unequivocal seal, is justly considered the property of his country, and, in a measure, of the civilized world. They may fairly claim him as their own, for whom, when living, he hazarded his all - his honour, fortune, and life! for whom he ever cherished anxious cares - for whom he toiled and suffered. Nor are they without a title, who, partaking of our common nature, shared his philanthropic sympathies, and earnest prayers. Such a reputation is a treasure to mankind which never can be told. Blessings innumerable descend upon the favoured people who rest under its shadow. It sheds upon them peace, security, and credit. They shine in its light, and derive from it, directly and indirectly, many eminent advantages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis George Washington by : William Barclay Allen
Download or read book George Washington written by William Barclay Allen and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington's political philosophy - radical for his time - was a commitment to the belief that law can never make just what is in its nature unjust. Before the close of the Revolutionary War, he had conceived of a union based on the progressive principle that the American people would qualify for self-government in the sense of free institutions in proportion to their moral capacity to govern themselves by the light of reason. Washington managed the conflicts over the spoils of victory that threatened to fracture the union. Containing this discord within the walls of the Constitution may be considered his single greatest achievement.
