Book excerpt: Charles Colcock Jones wrote The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States as an extended sermon encouraging white clergymen and those who owned slaves to pay attention to religious instruction for their slaves and free black people in their areas. The first part focuses on Jones' perception of the development of the population of slaves and free men across each state. The second portion shows a fascinatingly paternalistic critique of both slaves and slave owners by first criticising the black population for their lack of Christian virtue but rounding on the owners of slaves for failing to provide adequate religious opportunities. Whilst he certainly feels that the black population are ultimately morally dependent on the goodness of white, Christian men, he clearly wrestles with the knowledge that something in the social system is responsible for the discord and difficulty he associates with vice. Charles C Jones is, whilst clearly and unacceptably biased to modern readers, a valuable insight into the cognitive dissonance maintained by prominent members of the slave owning establishment in the United States during his time. He argues systematically for a system of education for slaves whilst consistently underestimating the use that education has historically been put to by oppressed peoples. The awareness of his context's immorality lurks on the edges of his consciousness, never quite surfacing. All readers will come away from the book with a new determination to interrogate cultural norms, established traditions and conventional wisdom. Book excerpt: In Charles Colcock Jones's 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States', the author explores the importance of religious education for African Americans during the antebellum period. Jones delves into the impact of Christianity on the enslaved population, discussing how religious teachings were used to control and manipulate them. Written in a persuasive and informative style, the book sheds light on the complex relationship between religion, race, and power in American society. Jones also includes firsthand accounts and biblical references to support his arguments, making this work a valuable contribution to the study of African American history and religious practices in the United States. In addition, Jones's detailed analysis of the cultural and social factors influencing the religious education of African Americans provides readers with a deeper understanding of the complexities of race relations in early America. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the intersection of religion, race, and power dynamics in American history.

Book excerpt: Published in 1842, this book provides an early glimpse into the religious practices and beliefs of African Americans in the southern United States. Jones, a Presbyterian minister and slave owner, advocates for the religious education of enslaved people as a means of improving their moral character and reducing the risk of rebellion. He presents his own experiences and observations along with biblical references to support his argument. This book is an important document for understanding the intersection of religion and race in 19th century America. Book excerpt: The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States by Charles Colcock Jones Sr. was published in 1843. The book includes four parts, the first giving a history of the African slave trade. Colcock, himself a minister and plantation owner, called on slave owners and ministers to provide religious instruction to slaves. Charles Colcock Jones Sr. (1804-1863) was a Presbyterian clergyman, educator, missionary, and planter of Liberty County, Georgia. The son of a merchant and planter with deep roots in coastal Georgia, Charles Colcock Jones, Sr. was born on December 20, 1804, at Liberty Hall, his father's plantation in Liberty County. While studying to be a minister in the North, Jones agonized over the morality of owning slaves, but he returned to Liberty County to become a planter, a fervent missionary to the slaves, sometimes called the "Apostle to Slaves," and a somewhat reluctant defender of the institution of slavery. Besides many tracts and papers, Jones published several books including The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States (1842), an appeal to slave owners and ministers to provide religious instruction to slaves. His brother-in-law wrote that Jones "did more than any other man in arousing the whole church of this country to a new interest in the spiritual welfare of the Africans in our midst."

Book excerpt: Slavery and racism in the United States run hand in hand and the silver screen is littered with dramatic representations of the hot, hazy environment of the Slave States at their height. The popular imagination is familiar with the white plantation house, the sugar cane and the cotton. Those who seek to peer deeper into the ways in which the people who filled those palaces and piles thought will be well served by 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes'. As a Presbyterian minister and the son of a Plantation owner, Charles Colcock Jones is the epitome of the establishment voice for this time and place. His reflections will run profoundly counter to the modern reader's sense of human equality but the ways in which he does and does not allow the humanity of the black population are in themselves fascinating. Read the praise he has for 'colored ministers' but brace for the descriptions of the flaws he believes he sees in the black population of the plantations he has visited. He explores largely by accident the economic realities of the plantation, the requirements of the work force, the rhythms of the seasons, the high days and holidays. He takes a particularly pragmatic approach to proselytising, ready to sell down the river any denominational quirks for the overall objective of transmitting what he saw as the core elements of Christian doctrine. The twin threads of socially enforced bigotry and radicalism run through this tract and the opportunity to see that cognitive dissonance and step into the 19th century should not be missed. "The poor shall never cease out of the land." - Deut. XV, 11. - "The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich, he bringeth low and raiseth up." - I Sam. II, 7. "The rich and the poor meet together. The Lord regardeth not the rich more than the poor. They are all the work of his hand." - Prov. XXII. 2, and Job XXXIV, 19. "The poor ye have always with you." - Matt. XXVI. 11. "Hearken, my beloved brethren! Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith aud heirs of the kingdom? but ye have despised the poor." - James II, 5. These and other similar passages of God's word affectingly teach us that it is a part of the divine arrangement to have ranks and orders in human society, and that God expects the higher and more favored sons of Adam to care for their poor brethren. These ranks and orders, and their mutual relations and obligations, have been from the beginning, and shall continue to the end. When, however, God was pleased to be manifested in human flesh, for human redemption, no other form did he choose for Himself to wear but the form of a servant. The incarnate Word is emphatically a friend and associate of the poor - nay, of publicans and sinners. He calls the penitent poor his brethren; nay, he says, that at the last day He will consider every thing done to the least of them as done to Himself. Yes! and so great is the regard He has for His poor, that He institutes one particular class of officers in his church - the Deacons - on purpose to see after their temporal wants. As for their spiritual necessities, He chose them as the special subject of His own personal attention when on earth; nay, He puts down the preaching of the gospel, by Himself, to the poor, as the most distinct and peculiar mark of His divine mission. "Art thou he that should come, (said John's messengers, ) or do we look for another?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
