Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Later PlatonistThe religious rites and beliefs were also set forth as pertaining to a common principle, and only at fault as having been adulterated with foreign and incongru ous elements. He taught, says Mosheim, that the religion of the multitude went hand in hand with Philosophy, and with her had shared the fate of being by degrees corrupted and obscured by human con ceits, superstition and lies; that it ought therefore to be brought back to its original purity by purging it of this dross and expounding it upon philosophical prin ciples; and that the whole purpose which Christ had in view was to reinstate and restore to its primitive integrity the Wisdom of the ancients - to reduce within bounds the universally-prevailing dominion of superstition - and in part to correct and in part to ex terminate the various errors that had found their way into the different popular religions.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Element in Plato and the Platonic Philosophy Many conceptions, propositions, and intimations recur fre quently in the course of the examination I must request that this be not everywhere regarded and blamed as unnecessary repetition. To one who ascends a mountain, the view of the country spread out beneath him is presented more than once. To the cursory glance, the recurring landscape appears always the same, but the attentive observer recognises new forms and lights in it from each new point of observation. The examination itself is of so high and genuine human interest, that 'i thought myself under obligation, to procure even for those who - are not by profession theologians or philosophers, the possibility of participating in it. Hence I have sought to preserve in the text a language intelligible to every educated person, and have put into 'the notes that which more particularly concerns the professional scholar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Instinct of Man Paul's'appearance in Athens was one of the most significant events connected with the first ef forts to evangelize the pagan world. This apostle of Christianity came to preach where the voice of Demosthenes had thrilled the listening multitudes; to hold up a moral standard where Aristotle had taught his ethics; to discourse on world-origin where Hesiod's Theogony was familiar; to speak of immortality where Plato had reasoned well, and where Socrates had died a martyr to his glorious hope. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction Dialogues of Plato I cannot but fear that in some places opinions have been here expressed in too decided' a tone; which, however, was naturally suggested by the authoritative character of a Review. But I should deeply regret, if any thing I wrote tended to encourage in young students a habit of presumptuous dogmatism, or of pronouncing too positively, except where the state ments put forward are declarations of a higher and competent authority. In this case, to hesitate and falter is to abandon our first duty, both as men and as Christians, of witnessing boldly to the truth. As these remarks have already been made the subject of various misconceptions and censures on their first appearance, I may be permitted to say, that in publishing them I had no wish to supersede religion by metaphysics, or Christianity by Plato nism, or the Church of England by Popery. I have endeavoured to take every opportunity of warning the young reader against removing philosophy from its proper place of subordination to Revelation and the Church; and to distinguish carefully between that Catholicism which is essential to Christianity, and of which the Church of England makes its boast, and Popery, which in its real nature is most un catholic, and little but the spirit of Dissent under the form of a Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dialogues of Plato, Translated Into English With Analyses and Introductions, Vol. 2 We must insist, then, that Plato's was a great, all but the greatest, dramatic genius. The characteristics of that most noble of arts, including even the effacement' of the artist's own person, are seen at once from the fact, that all his works are - not didactic sermons, in form at least, but - realistic dia-i logues: and the chief interlocutor in most, a prominent figure in nearly all, is that most grotesque and most pathetic, most ugly and most fascinating of figures, whether in fiction or in real life, short of stature, stout of limb, satyr-faced and siren-voiced, Socrates the Athenian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Investigation of the Trinity of Plato and of Philo Judaeus: And of the Effects Which an Attachment to Their Writings Had Upon the Principles and Reasonings of the Fathers of the Christian Church LL the works of God are wonderful in their kind and display, in either a minute or stupen dous manner, the wisdom and benevolence Of the Creator. Philosophy, in its several branches, initi ates men into the great mysteries Of the creation, and, by unfolding the principles, upon which it was at first conducted and is still supported, leads us to admire, to reverence, and adore the author Of all things. It is for this reason the most valuable gift, that by the ordinary course of nature has been bestowed upon man. Sacred science, a school for its most illustrious prophets and a refuge for the noblest traditions of mankind. Thanks to the immense excavations and investigations of recent years, the people of Egypt are better known to us at the present time than any of the civilisations that preceded Greece its history is revealed, written on pages of stone. In spite, however, of the fact that its monuments have been cleared of the accumulations of ages, and its hieroglyphs deciphered, we have not suc ceeded in penetrating to the deepest secrets of its thought, the occult teachings of its priests. This teaching, scientifically expounded in the temples and prudently veiled beneath the mysteries, shows us at a glance the soul of Egypt, the secret of its politics, and the important part it has played in the world's history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plato, With an English Translation, Vol. 1 of 2: IX Laws Politics and Ethics are, naturally, the subjects with which the Laws is mainly concerned; but in the Tenth Book we get something also of psycho logical and metaphysical doctrine. In his vindication of Religion in that Book - to which reference has been made above - Plato elaborates that view of Soul as the principle of self-movement which he had indicated, much earlier, in the Phaedrus. His dis cussion of the relation of Soul to Motion, on the one hand, and to Reason, on the other, together with his new classification of the kinds of motion, and his distinction between primary and secondary motions form the most valuable additions to Platonic philosophy which the Laws contains.
