Book excerpt: This research considered relationships among teachers' perceptions of principal leadership and teachers' perceptions of school climate by using the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) survey and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire (Revised) for Middle Schools (OCDQ-RM) survey. Teachers from six middle schools in the same district participated in the study. Teachers also responded to five demographic questions pertaining to gender, age, years of teaching experience, length of time with principal, and level of education. The findings indicated that the subscales of the LPI were inter-correlated while the subscales of the OCDQ-RM were independent. Male teachers tended to perceive principals as being more restrictive than did female teachers. The data indicated that there were differences in perceptions of teachers based upon length in the profession. Teachers' perceptions of principal leadership behaviors were related to their perceptions of school climate. High scores on the LPI, as perceived by teachers, suggested that teachers perceived the school climate to be open. Conversely, low scores on the LPI, as perceived by teachers, indicated a closed school climate. In addition, the study indicated that beginning teachers did not feel open or have professional interactions with veteran teachers. In general, the teachers perceived principal behavior to be influential on school climate.

Book excerpt: The school principal is viewed as one of the most influential individuals on a school campus (Cohen, McCabe, Michelli, & Pickeral, 2009; Edmonds, 1979; Leech & Fulton, 2008). With this influence, the principal plays a great role in facilitating the climate of the school; which in turn, can have a significant impact on student achievement (MacNeil, Prater, & Busch, 2009). The purpose of this study was to explore high school teachers' perceptions about leadership practices of their principals, as well as to gain an understanding of the teachers' perceptions of school climate in a large urban district in the Western United States. Data was collected with the use of two survey instruments, the Leadership Practices Inventory, which measures the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire revised for secondary schools, which measures five dimensions of high school climate. Participating teachers were asked five demographic questions including: age, gender, number of years teaching, number of years teaching with current principal, and level of education. The schools with participating teachers were categorized by three other variables: total response rates, School Performance Framework scores, and the percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. Across nine high schools, 334 usable surveys were collected. Pearson correlations were used to find relationships among variables within the survey instruments, while MANOVA calculations with appropriate ANOVA post hoc were used to find differences in demographic variables. It was found that engaged teacher behavior coupled with principals who model expectations and give authentic, goal aligned encouragement related to high levels of positive school climate. Additionally, data suggested schools whose teachers perceived their principal in a negative manner related to low levels of school climate regardless of the socioeconomic make-up of the student body.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between principal leadership style and climate as perceived by teachers. Eleven elementary schools and 275 teachers participated in this study. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) assessed teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership styles. The Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire - Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE) obtained climate data, measured as Open, Closed, Disengaged, and Engaged. Demographic data consisted of five categories: (a) Gender, (b) Years teaching, (c) Years with current principal, (d) Level of Education, and (e) SES and Star rating of each school. An analysis, utilizing Pearson's r correlations, indicated relationships existed between the five LPI and the six OCDQ-RE subscales for principal and teacher behavior. When teachers perceived exemplary principal behaviors, their perception of Collegial and Supportive climate indicators were very high and Disengagement low. Conversely, when teachers perceived low principal behaviors, their perceptions of Collegiality were low with high Restrictive climate indicators and high Disengagement. An analysis, utilizing MANOVA, indicated teachers who spent zero to two years with the principal or spent greater than six years with the principal perceived their principals in a similar manner. Teachers who spent three to five years with the principal scored the principal lower. An analysis of the SES and Star rating of the school indicated teachers from high SES schools with satisfactory achievement scored their principals higher than teachers from high SES schools with high achievement on four LPI subscales and one OCDQ-RE subscale. Findings support the proposition for continued research in the area of school climate and principal leadership.

Book excerpt: The problem under investigation for this quantitative study focused on the responses of K-12 public educators about school leadership effectiveness and fairness and the culture of school organizations, with special attention to the relationship between working conditions and student achievement/growth. A sample of 5,912 (n=5,912) educators’ responses was used for the study. The data collected were publicly available, archival data from the responses reported by the Teaching Empowering Leading Learning Tennessee Survey. The original survey consists of the following eight research-based constructs: time for planning, facilities and resources, community support and involvement, management of student conduct, teacher leadership, school leadership, professional development, and instructional practices and support. This quantitative study focused on six sub-categories: time, consistency, teacher support, respect and rust, fair and objective teacher assessment and an overall perception of the school being a good environment in which to teach and learn. Data collected was analyzed through use of two-way chi square analysis.

Book excerpt: Effective school leadership has become a priority of educational policy due to its perceived importance in improving and sustaining student achievement. However, leadership is not a unilateral act as perceptions from followers affect the ability of leaders to influence the school outcomes as measured by student achievement. Previous research suggested a relationship between educational leadership and school climate, and between school climate and student achievement. The focus of this study was to explore an alternative measure of discrepancy in the perceptions of leadership behaviors between principals' self-report and teachers' report, and to examine relationship among this discrepancy measure, school climate, and student achievement. This quantitative correlational study collected data from two secondary data sets: (a) the data from a previous study by Courtney Fee in 2008 on perceptions of leadership behaviors and school climate; and (b) the reports on student scores in the standardized tests published by the Department of Education of the state of Tennessee. Through multiple linear regression analysis, the findings suggested that school climate was significantly related to student achievement while the magnitude of perception discrepancy of leadership behaviors between teachers and their principals was not a significant predictor of student achievement. The study provided further insights into understanding the relationship among educational leadership, school climate, and student achievement. Recommendations and suggestions for future research were discussed.

Book excerpt: This study made inquiry into teacher leadership and its relationship with school climate in American public schools by using the data from SASS 2003-04 by National Center for Education Statistics. The study was focused on the statistical assessment of public school teachers' perceptions of teacher leadership in the areas of school operation and classroom operation. Another aspect to be inquired was teachers' perceptions of school climate in the dimensions of school leadership and teacher collaboration. The results of descriptive analyses in the study indicated that the majority of public school teachers did not consider they had much influence over the areas of school operation; however, they felt they had a great deal of control over the areas of classroom operation. With regard to school climate, teachers were satisfied about their school leadership. The results from discriminant function analysis indicated that school teachers' perceptions of school climate and teacher leadership could statistically reflect their school membership (elementary and secondary schools). The results from canonical correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between teacher leadership and school climate. The dimension of school leadership in the School Climate variable and the areas of school operation in the Teacher Leadership variable were the major components that contributed most to the multivariate relationship. This study has provided support to the existing literature on the factors that affect teacher leadership development. It adds to the knowledge base in the field of teacher leadership and its relationship with school climate with quantifiable evidence at a national level. The findings of this study also pose a challenge to the previous literature regarding the notion that teacher leadership was flourishing in American schools. This study has suggested that there seems to be a latent conceptual gap between what researchers consider to be effective school leadership including substantial support of teacher leadership and what school teachers consider to be supportive principal behaviors excluding the elements of involving teachers in the school decision-making process.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between principals' sense of achievement and teachers' perceptions of their principals' leadership behaviors. This was determined by examining job satisfaction of principals and leadership style using the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and the School District's Climate Survey. The population for this study was teachers and principals in a large suburban school district in the Richmond, VA area. Participating schools were selected using a convenience sample based upon those in the school district's annual school climate survey rotation. Of the district schools scheduled for the climate survey, only those that had their principal in place for a minimum of 1 year were chosen to participate. There were nine schools on the cycle for the 2011-2012 school year that met this criteria, yielding 9 principals and approximately 500 teachers. Data were collected from 5 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 2 high schools. The principals were asked to complete the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire Sense of Achievement subscale survey. Teachers in the selected schools had recently participated in the School District's Climate Survey. Data for this study came from the Leadership subscale of the survey. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that principals generally are satisfied with the sense of achievement they have in their jobs. Data suggest they are most satisfied with having the opportunity to do something worthwhile and less satisfied with seeing the results of their work. Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that teachers generally are satisfied with their principals' leadership behaviors. A Pearson correlation was run to determine the relationship between the mean scores of the principals' sense of achievement and the teachers' perceptions of their principals' leadership behaviors. The data revealed that there was no statistically significant relationship between teachers' perceptions of their principals' leadership behaviors and principals' sense of achievement. While no significant relationship between the two data sets was found, analysis supports the need for principals to be satisfied with their jobs in order to create the open climate necessary for teachers to cultivate a collaborative approach to their craft. Teachers in an open climate are more likely to cooperate and are more committed to their job and each other.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the relationship between elementary teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership behavior and how these perceptions relate to their job satisfaction. Perceptions were measured by the Leadership Behavior Instrument and the Job Satisfaction Survey. The respondents for the surveys worked in Southeast Tennessee and Northeast Mississippi. This study was guided by the following four questions: 1: How do elementary teachers perceive the leadership behavior of principals in the domains of human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict; 2) To what extent to elementary teachers express satisfaction with their jobs in the domains of supervision, contingent rewards, operating procedures, coworkers, nature of work, and communication; 3) What is the relationship between elementary teachers' perceptions of their leaders' leadership behaviors in the domains of human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict and their overall job satisfaction; and 4) Are there differences in the extent of the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their leaders' leadership behaviors in the five domains, and their overall job satisfaction by variables such as level of education, amount of time at current school, and years of teaching experience? The results of this study indicated that there is a strong correlation between teachers' perceptions of leadership behavior and their job satisfaction. The results of this study did not find a significant correlation between job satisfaction and level of education, amount of time at current school, and years of teaching experience.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this quantitative study was to a) investigate the perceptions of public and private school teachers regarding the extent to which principals exhibit behaviors informed by 13 core competencies of leadership as well as the four dimensions of principle leadership and b) explore the impact these behaviors have on school climate. Through study findings revealed no statistically significant differences between private and public school teachers' perceptions regarding school climate, teacher perception data from the Leadership Behavior Inventory (Green 2014) did suggest that behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principal leadership positively impact school climate. Multiple regression analyses revealed that behaviors informed by diversity, one of the 13 core competencies and the four dimension of principal leadership, had the greatest impact on school climate, Principals who strive to create a better school culture can positively influence teacher effectiveness, student achievement, and school climate by purposefully exhibiting transformational leadership behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principal, had the greatest impact on school climate. Principals who strive to create a better school culture can positively influence teacher effectiveness, student achievement, and school climate by purposely exhibiting transformational leadership behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principals leadership.
