Book excerpt: Abstract: This study investigated the relationship of self-esteem, world-view and participation in leisure activities to high versus low life satisfaction of the Black elderly. Participants were 33 females and 11 males ranging from 65 to 88 years of age. A demographic questionnaire along with the Life Satisfaction Index A, the Self-Esteem Scale, The Belief Analysis Scale, and a leisure activities checklist were utilized in the study. The participants were interviewed by the researcher and her assistant and their responses to the inventory were recorded on computer scorable answer sheets. Overall, the results of the study supported one of the three hypotheses. Only the hypothesis that a combination of the variables self-esteem, world-view and participation in leisure activities would discriminate between high and low life satisfaction group members received support. The hypothesis that there was a significant difference between high and low life satisfaction Black elderly on the variables self-esteem, Afrocentric world-view and participation in leisure activities did not receive support in this study. Further the hypothesis that a combination of the variables self esteem, Afrocentric world-view and participation in leisure activities would predict life satisfaction among the Black elderly also did not receive support. The results revealed self-esteem consistently was related to life satisfaction of Black elderly in this study. Self-esteem in combination with Afrocentric world-view and participation in leisure activities seems to be related to greater life satisfaction. However the variables of Afrocentric world-view participation in leisure activities each contributed only a negligible amount of variance to life satisfaction. Limitations of this study and directions for future research are discussed.
