Book excerpt: Abstract: Projected increases of Hispanics in the U.S. and their contribution to the labor force have created concerns for the future of the U.S. labor market due to their low educational attainment rates. While the proportion of women in the workforce is projected to increase, Mexican American women specifically are underrepresented at all levels of education and overrepresented in low-paying occupations. Due to the notion that the quality of the U.S. labor market will depend on this group's education and job skills, the career development of Hispanics has become a salient issue in research literature. This study sought to expand a theoretical model of career and achievement motivation by testing its generalizability to Mexican American women. The principal purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of mastery motivation and career aspirations as predictors of nontraditional career self-efficacy in Mexican American adolescent women, and the moderating effect of ethnic identity on these relationships. Participants in this study consisted of 121 adolescent high school females from two public high schools in south Texas. Participants responded to each of the instruments: Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale, Career Aspiration Scale, Work and Family Orientation Questionnaire, and Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure, followed by a demographic questionnaire. The data indicated that while there was a significant relationship between Career Aspirations and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE), the addition of Ethnic Identity as a moderator did not add to the strength of the relationship. Data indicated a positive, significant relationship between mastery motivation and non-traditional career self-efficacy (NTCSE) as well as evidence of a significant moderation effect of Ethnic Identity between Mastery Motivation and NTCSE. Findings suggest that there are other factors that may be impeding the actualization of these student's aspirations. While their aspirations are high, their belief in themselves to successfully accomplish the education requirements and job duties for non-traditional careers is less than their aspirations. Due to the age of this sample, it is possible that ethnic identity may not be a salient factor influencing their self-efficacy, but instead may be a dominant cultural worldview. Limitations of this study and future research directions are discussed.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of current literature indicates the existence of a dynamic theoretical intersection between identity, self-efficacy, gender, education, and socioeconomic status (SES). To facilitate an understanding of that dynamic, differences in academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, and psychosocial identity development among freshmen and sophomore female college students (n = 275) from differing socioeconomic groups were investigated. Class and gender inequities in the educational system and the world of work are also discussed, illustrating their affect on individual identity development, and on academic and career self-efficacy. Due to societal oppression and the lack of privileges otherwise afforded to individuals from higher SES groups, it was hypothesized that women from lower SES groups would experience lower academic self-efficacy, career self-efficacy, and psychosocial identity development, particularly when adjusting to a higher SES dominated college environment. Participants completed three measures in addition to demographic questions used for determining SES. Administered measures included the Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (OMEIS; Adams, Shea, & Fitch, 1979), the short form of the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale (CDMSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 2001), and the College Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (CASES; Owen & Froman, 1988). SES was determined using a combination of annual family income, parental occupation, and parental education level. The use of a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-tests revealed significant differences for female students in the lowest SES group when compared to female students in higher SES groups on measures of both career self-efficacy and academic self-efficacy. A chi-square analysis was used to determine differences in identity development among SES groups; findings were mixed. For example, despite the lowest SES group having the largest number of female students occupy the highest identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the experiences of 13 culturally traditional women who returned to higher education as nontraditional students. An individual unstructured interview, with guiding questions, was held with each woman. This provided the opportunity for these women to articulate their experience. The interviews were transcribed and interpreted using a synthesis of qualitative methods based upon Kvale’s method. Seven themes emerged: (a) participants would tell a woman considering a return to school to “do it!” (b) participants saw spousal support as significant in their ability to return to school, (c) participants saw their families as generally supportive of their return to school, (d) participants felt their spirituality increased when they returned to school, (e) participants were surprised they did well academically when they returned to school, (f) participants felt returning to school had increased their world view, and (g) participants valued higher education and wanted to finish something they had started. The implications of this study support the need for a more open dialogue about the experience of a traditional woman as she returns to obtain her undergraduate degree as a nontraditional student. The support of family and institutions appear integral to both retention and completion for these women who now make up a significant portion of those presently attending institutions of higher learning.
