Book excerpt: This study explored the impact of self-care, burnout and compassion fatigue on mental health social workers. This correlational study was designed to provide a fuller understanding of this relationship. Stamm’s Theory of Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue and Orem’s self-care deficit theory served as the theoretical foundations of this study. The sample included 38 members of Millwood Hospital and the three Excel Centers, who volunteered to participate in this study. Participants completed online versions of the demographics questionnaire, Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL), and Self-Care Assessment Work Sheet (SCAW). Correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multiple linear regressions were performed to test research hypotheses concerning associations between self-care and effects of burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction among social workers in healthcare settings. Study results indicated no significant correlation between self-care practices and participants’ level of burnout, compassion fatigue, or compassion satisfaction. However, the regression model revealed a significant association between external self-care practices and lower levels of burnout and compassion fatigue. Practice implications are highlighted and discussion of future research on the relationship among self-care practices, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction are discussed.

Failing to explore the reality of burnout and systemic barriers to preventing it is detrimental to the overall well-being of social workers in micro, mezzo, and macro settings. Examining burnout prevention through further research is vital to the field of social work in an effort to improve the well-being and self-awareness of service providers and improve the quality of client care. This study explored the systemic barriers to preventing burnout among social service workers employed by human service organizations in Los Angeles County. In this research study, interviews were conducted with direct-practice social service professionals (n=9) in an effort to better understand their experiences with burnout and to explore their perceptions of systemic barriers to preventing burnout in human service organizations. Major findings consisted of four major categories: (1) systemic barriers to preventing burnout; (2) systemic support for preventing burnout; (3) physical manifestations of burnout; and (4) preventative measures and self-care. While some may argue that burnout among social service providers is inevitable, it is hoped that this research enables social service workers to obtain greater balance in their lives and identify the warning signs of burnout to improve their quality of life and their job performance. Book excerpt: Purpose: This research explored the relationship between compassion satisfaction and burnout among helping professionals, specifically within the field of social work. Methods: Anonymous online survey of adults 18 and older (N=423) with at least 3 months experience in the social work field. Compassion satisfaction, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, depersonalization, and personal achievement were measured using two self-assessment tools: the Professional Quality of Life scale (ProQOL) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: The more experienced social workers (those with five years or more in the field) reported higher levels of compassion satisfaction and personal achievement, and lower levels of burnout, depersonalization, and secondary traumatic stress than less experienced social workers. Discussion: These findings support previous research that a sense of mastery in the field increases compassion satisfaction. Social workers should use emotional support, clinical supervision, practice self-care strategies, continuous training, and use evidence-based practices to mitigate the negative effects of burnout, compassion fatigue, and depersonalization.
