Book excerpt: Mind wandering, or thought unrelated to the task at hand, predicts mood in the moment more than five times better than what activity a person is doing and is implicated in clinical disorders such as depression. In addition to emotion, mind wandering predicts errors in reading comprehension and tasks requiring sustained attention. Given mind wandering's prevalence in 50% of daily life and its relevance to well-being and cognitive performance, it is worth better understanding how to regulate it. Therefore, we investigated mind wandering's correlative, causal, and mechanistic relationship to two of its potential regulators, working memory and mindfulness. In chapter 2, we investigated whether working memory solely inhibits mind wandering or instead facilitates mind wandering in a context-dependent fashion. We accomplished this by assessing whether those with greater working memory capacity reported more mind wandering specifically during undemanding tasks. In chapter 3, we explored whether mindfulness was related to decreased mind wandering by developing a behavioral measure of mindfulness - breath counting - and assessing whether it was negatively correlated with mind wandering. In chapter 4, we investigated the causal relation of mind wandering with working memory and mindfulness by assessing whether working memory training would increase working memory and thus increase mind wandering, and whether breath counting training would increase mindfulness and thus decrease mind wandering. Finally, in chapter 5, we examined whether working memory capacity reduced mind wandering by restricting it from awareness. This mechanism was investigated by assessing whether awareness of mind wandering increased when working memory was loaded and thus no longer available to restrict mind wandering from awareness. Findings suggest that working memory may facilitate mind wandering in undemanding contexts. In contrast, mindfulness may result in decreased mind wandering in the moments when it is exercised, and repeatedly exercising mindfulness through breath counting training may increase mindfulness.

Such individual differences can be characterized via resting-state measurement of temporal synchrony between brain regions (i.e. functional connectivity). Here, I examine individual differences in working memory and mindfulness in relation to connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). The DLPFC is a major component of the executive control network that increased in activation during tasks involving working memory and mental control. Young adults exhibit greater working memory capacity (how much information could be maintained and manipulated in mind) with greater MPFC-DLPFC negative correlation (whereas older adults show reduced working memory capacity and MPFC-DLPFC correlation relative to younger adults). Increased dispositional mindfulness (everyday awareness of the present moment) is associated with greater MPFC-DLPFC positive correlations, at rest. Thus, variation in two advantageous human abilities, working memory capacity and mindfulness, may be related to opposite patterns of internetwork functional connectivity (MPFC-DLPFC). The MPFC is a prominent component of the default-mode network (DMN), which typically decreases in activation during attention-demanding task requiring external focus. Given its relevance to mindfulness tendencies, mind-wandering (MW) episodes engage distributed regions within the DMN. I also investigate mind-wandering frequency using experience sampling with fMRI. MW transiently engages cortical regions associated with executive control and state-level mind wandering is reduced in those with greater trait-level mindfulness, as measured by resting-state functional connectivity.

Dispositional mindfulness, or the ability to non-judgmentally attend to the present moment, may play a role in the ability to sustain attention during cognitive tasks. Mind-wandering and mindfulness are opposing constructs, but both contribute to task completion as they represent the allocation of attentional resources to either on- or off-task processing. The current study investigated the relationships between trait mindfulness, task-related and task-unrelated thought, and cognitive control in the context of a Go/No-Go and Continuous Performance task in older adults. Extending previous literature, we found a negative association between trait mindfulness and the proportion of task-unrelated thoughts during both tasks. Mindfulness was associated with higher reactive control, but not inhibitory control or proactive control. Though we did not find an association between mind-wandering and behavioral performance on either task, we found that task-unrelated thought mediated the association between mindfulness and proactive control. Contrary to our hypotheses, more task-unrelated thought was associated with higher proactive control, and this effect was moderated by working memory capacity such that there was a positive association between task-unrelated thought and proactive control for those with average and low working memory, but not high working memory. These results add to the existing literature examining the unique functioning of mind-wandering in older adult cohorts.
