Book excerpt: Many teachers of students with mild disabilities experience difficulty writing IEPs, and they lack a foundation in the regular education curriculum of academic skills and sequences associated with each grade level. This book was designed to provide this foundation. Presented in the form of scope and sequence charts that can be used as objectives for the State Frameworks (goals and benchmarks), this resource assists in preparing IEPs, including the new process of identification of children with disabilities through their responses to intervention (RTI). An additional focus is on the impact of federal laws (IDEA and NCLB) on the curriculum and assessment in schools today. The book has been reorganized into ten chapters, including: historical perspectives; early childhood special education curricula; oral expression curricula; reading and listening curricula; written expression curricula; mathematics curricula; educational technology curricula K-12; social and self competence curricula; science curricula; and evaluation reports/case studies (Appendix). The scope and sequence charts were modified to include current national education standards and benchmarks and the skills in each of the academic areas that require annual state assessment. These charts will assist teachers in modifying the general education curriculum for students with mild disabilities and to write complete Individual Education Programs, using age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate teaching and assessment materials. Chapter summaries, included for review purposes, also serve as selective and motivational reading. With special education teachers in short supply and the demands on their time so great, this book will provide a valuable resource for cutting the clutter and moving to the heart of the teaching process: determining what skills students need to move effectively to the next level.

Book excerpt: It is remarkable that children learn all of the syntactic structures described in this book and with no instruction. Most children have mastered them by the time they start school. However, learning a language is subject to critically sensitive age restraints, and learning a second language becomes increasingly difficult as children age through this zone of sensitivity. Therefore, the goal of this updated and expanded edition of this book is to provide teachers with a detailed explicit knowledge of the syntactic system and the order in which it is learned. The material is presented clearly and.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured Literacy (SL) approaches are increasingly recognized as the gold standard for teaching struggling readers. This highly practical book walks educators through designing SL interventions for students with common types of reading difficulties--word reading, comprehension, or a combination of both. Louise Spear-Swerling offers tools for assessing students' reading profiles and tailoring SL to their needs. In a convenient large-size format, the volume is packed with case studies, sample lesson plans addressing both early and advanced stages of reading, instructional activities, and application exercises for teachers. A chapter on English language structure presents essential foundations for implementing SL effectively. The companion website features a knowledge survey about language structure (with answer key), as well as downloadable copies of the book's 14 reproducible forms. See also Louise Spear-Swerling's edited volume, Structured Literacy Interventions: Teaching Students with Reading Difficulties, Grades K–6, which surveys SL interventions across all components of literacy.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an internationally comparable set of indicators on educational provision for students with disabilities, learning difficulties and disadvantages (DDD). It highlights the number of students involved, where they are educated – special schools, special classes or regular classes – and in what phases of education – pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education. It also includes information on the physical provision and on student/teacher ratios and discusses policy implications concerning special education. This new edition also presents for the first time trends in the data for students with DDD from 1999 to 2003. This edition presents new quantitative and qualitative data for the school year 2002-03 in the following OECD countries : Belgium (Flemish and French Communities.), the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom (England) and the United States and in the non-member economy Chile. A strong and consistent finding is the preponderance of the number of boys over girls among DDD students in a wide range of analyses. Whether done by location, cross-national or national category, age of student, or phase of education, there is a higher percentage of males, typically a 60/40 split, across most OECD countries. Students with Disabilities, Learning Difficulties and Disadvantages: Policies, Statistics and Indicators will be of particular interest to policy makers and education experts looking for an internationally comparative framework on special education.

Book excerpt: Here is a comprehensive introduction to language disorders in children...one whose two-fold developmental/contextual perspective acknowledges that children's language learning systems include not only their skills, knowledge, and biological abilities...but also their language background, family settings, and the context in which they are attempting to learn language. The text's primary focus is on perspectives from normal development, and the bulk of the coverage is devoted to examination of expectations for early (infant through toddler), middle (preschool through early elementary), and later (middle elementary through adolescent) stages of learning language. These developmentally-geared divisions are then used to guide discussions of language assessment and intervention for children who are not learning language normally, yet who have characteristics in common with their peers who are.
