Book excerpt: Research supports the link between higher levels of cognitive complexity and counseling efficacy. Counselor educators, therefore, strive to promote higher levels of cognitive complexity in different areas of counselor preparation, such as individual counseling and multicultural training. Presently, the research literature lacks studies focused on cognitive complexity in group work training. To address this gap in the literature, this study used content analysis, a qualitative methodology to describe cognitive complexity of 10 counselors-in-training enrolled in a Group Dynamics and Methods course. Using Bloom’s Cognitive Taxonomy to analyze participants’ written reflection assignments, I found that participants demonstrated cognitive complexity primarily in knowledge through application levels. Several categories/themes emerged from a separate analysis, including leader styles/techniques, norms, activities, and sharing/disclosing. I discuss these findings and highlight key aspects of the findings in relation to the broader literature. I identify implications for counselor educators and suggest future studies for counselor education researchers.

Book excerpt: Although researchers have indicated that counselors' clinical experience positively predicts increased cognitive complexity, most research on the topic has not addressed how counselors' own experiences shape their cognitive complexity. Completed research on counselors' cognitive complexity has been primarily quantitative, included European American participants, and has not considered the multicultural context beyond Western countries. Utilizing an explanatory case study design, this research employs the Counselors Cognition Questionnaire (CCQ) to explore counseling students' cognitive complexity development, in-depth interviews to examine the educational experience and culture that shape their cognitive complexity, and document analysis to examine the supporting of existing regulations. Ten participants completed CCQ, and eight of them participated in interviews. Results showed that seven participants scored low, while the rest scored higher cognitive complexity. Participants perceived that laboratory practicum in counseling courses had helped them develop their cognitive skills. However, a series of courses and participants' social life are inseparable from their cognitive development. In addition, the existing regulations showed their support through the curriculum design. These findings revealed that the participants' cognitive complexity is influenced by personal, social, professional, and cultural factors. The philosophical values of national constitutions and the pillars of unity in diversity that underpin all existing rules are inextricably linked to the embodiment of these features. In the United States, research on cognitive complexity has primarily shown it as a result of professional development, whereas it is an expression of intersecting personal, social and professional identities with national philosophy in an Indonesian counselor education program.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Education and Training in Professional Psychology provides the first comprehensive treatment of the processes and current state-of-the art practices bearing on educating and training professional psychologists. Thousands of psychologists are employed full-time as faculty members or clinical supervisors in graduate, practicum, internship, and postdoctoral training programs or training sites. This handbook provides a single resource that pulls together the substantial scholarship on education and training in psychology, covering the full spectrum of historic developments, salient issues, current standards, and emerging trends in psychology education and training. It provides a thorough analysis of doctoral and postdoctoral training for psychologists in clinical, counseling, or school psychology specialties. Because competency issues are moving to the forefront in the design of training programs and the evaluation of trainee performance, the handbook's authors have made models and standards for competency a primary theme. This volume captures the current state of education and training while emphasizing emerging trends and forecasting future directions.

Book excerpt: The goal of this research was to examine the relationship between the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and undergraduate grade point average (UGPA) admissions criteria and the prediction of future counseling competencies in four domain areas; knowledge, counseling skills, professional dispositions, and professional behaviors. The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) provided the measure for knowledge, paired with the Counseling Competencies Scale (CCS), measuring counseling skills, professional dispositions, and professional behaviors. Three types of correlational analyses (Multiple-linear Regression, Pearson Product Moment, and Canonical) were used to test the relationships between the variables and subscales. Overall, significant models were produced in areas consistent with past research: GRE and UGPA scores show a relationship to CPCE scores but not the CCS skills assessment. The author concluded that counselor educators should review their admissions criteria and ensure that the value that they place on the GRE and UGPA criteria is backed by research. Recommendations for future research should focus on the use of alternate admissions criteria which assess applicants for personal characteristics and other qualities considered necessary for a counselor to be successful.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: For this study, a web-based survey method was used as a means of collecting data to test a predictive model of education, supervised clinical experience (SCE), age, human services experience (HSE) and cognitive complexity. The theoretical framework for the study was Perry's (1970; 1999) scheme of intellectual development. The sample consisted of 332 counseling and social work students in graduate training programs in four different regions of the United States. The instruments used in the study were a researcher-developed demographic questionnaire and the Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) instrument (Moore, 1987). The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicated that education and human services experience predicted a significant proportion of the variance in cognitive complexity. However, age and supervised clinical experience did not significantly predict any of the variance in cognitive complexity. Additional analyses were conducted to examine the effects of gender, ethnicity, programs, and earned degrees on a measure of cognitive complexity. Results of the Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) did not reveal significant gender, ethnicity, program differences; however, as expected there were differences in terms of previously earned degree. Students who previously earned master's degrees had significantly higher cognitive complexity scores than students who had only earned a bachelor's degree. This study provided partial support for Perry's theory of intellectual development. The study also has implications for supervision, education and training of students in counseling and related fields.

Book excerpt: Integrating recent research and developments in the field, this revised second edition introduces an easy-to-master strategy for developing and writing culturally sensitive case conceptualizations and treatment plans. Concrete guidelines and updated case material are provided for developing conceptualizations for the five most common therapy models: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic, Biopsychosocial, Adlerian, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The chapters also include specific exercises and activities for mastering case conceptualization and related competencies and skills. Also new to this edition is a chapter on couple and family case conceptualizations, and an emphasis throughout on trauma. Practitioners, as well as graduate students in counseling and in clinical psychology, will gain the essential skills and knowledge they need to master case conceptualizations.
