Book excerpt: Despite decades of research on achievement goals, little research evaluates achievement goal orientations in African American students, particularly African American males. This study, therefore, examines the relationship between students' achievement goal orienations and students' academic self-efficacy. A social cognitive framework describes this association, and the relationship between students' achievement goal orientations and students' perceptions of the classroom goal structures. In addition, the relationship between students' achievement goal orientations and students' beliefs about the relevance of school for future success was analyzed. Participants were eighth-grade students (N = 70) enrolled in a charter school in the Knowledge is Power Program. Results of the investigation revealed that the males and females do not differ in their goal orientations. The results also indicated that mastery goal orientations and academic self-efficacy are positively correlated; however, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance were not related to academic self-efficacy. Results indicated that all three goal orientations of students were positively correlated with their respective classroom goals structures. Finally, as hypothesized, regression analyses revealed that mastery goal orientations, performance-approach goal orientations, and academic self-efficacy were found to be significant predictors for students' educational aspirations and students' beliefs about the relevance of school for future success.

Book excerpt: Much research has been conducted in order to determine the most significant variables associated with student academic achievement. This study explored the association among student goal orientation, self-efficacy, and academic achievement measured by GPA in a sample of undergraduate students from a large evangelical university. The trichotomous model for goal orientation was utilized including: mastery goals (motivated by a desire to master a task or subject), performance-approach goals (motivated by a desire to perform well in comparison with to others), and performance-avoidant goals (motivated by a fear of failure). Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance for the fixed factors of median split self-efficacy and GPA range. The outcome variable was student scores for mastery, performance-approach and performance-avoidant goal orientation respectively. Results indicated no significant interaction between GPA range and self-efficacy for any of the three models. However, GPA range had a significant main effect on performance-approach orientation and self-efficacy had a significant main effect on mastery orientation. Moreover, bivariate correlations demonstrated significant correlations between student self-efficacy scores and each type of goal orientation. Implications were discussed regarding the benefits of promoting both mastery and performance-approach goals through instructional practices as a means to promote learning and student retention in academic institutions.

In 1989, Zimmerman and Schunk edited the first book devoted to this topic. They assembled key theorists offering a range of perspectives on how students self-regulate their academic functioning. One purpose of that volume was to provide theoretical direction to ongoing as well as nascent efforts to explore academic self-regulatory processes. Since that date, there has been an exponential surge in research. This second volume on academic self-regulation offers the fruits of the first generation of research. It also addresses a number of key issues that have arisen since then such as how self-regulation differs from such related constructs as motivation and metacognition, and whether students can be taught self-regulatory skills. The contributors reveal an interesting, uplifting, and at times, disturbing picture of how students grapple with the day-to-day problems of achieving in circumstances with inherent limitations and obstacles. This volume provides insight into the source of students' capabilities to surmount adversities -- the origins of their self-initiated processes designed to improve learning, motivation, and achievement. The text is organized on the basis of a conceptual framework that analyzes academic self-regulation into four major dimensions. That model is presented in the first chapter, and key processes that influence each of these dimensions are discussed by prominent researchers in the chapters that follow.
