Book excerpt: My research focused on the relationship between career development and the different facets of racism that presents challenges in the world of academia. The social landscape of society was torn as a result of the deaths of Travon Martin, Mike Brown, Eric Grey and Eric Garner. Public opinion has varied on the causes of the deaths of many individuals in the African American community. As the author of this study I felt compelled to highlight the strength and perseverance of minorities in a college environment. Upon the completion of my study I realized that I was chronicling myself.

Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). The college transfer students, who tended to be younger, had higher perception of career barriers scores, and this did not change across demographic variables. Future research using a qualitat.

Educational and economic changes in today’s society demands well thought out strategies for preparing students to survive academically, socially, and financially in the future. African American students are at a disadvantage in this strategic planning process due to a long history of racism, injustice, and marginalization. African American Students’ Career and College Readiness: The Journey Unraveled explores the historical, legal, and socio-political issues of education affecting African American students and their career and college readiness. Each chapter has been written based on the authors’ experience and passion for the success of students in the African American population. Some of the chapters will appear to be written in a more conversational and idiomatic tone, whereas others are presented in a more erudite format. Each chapter, however, presents a contextual portrayal of the contemporary, and often dysfunctional, pattern of society’s approach to supporting this population. Contributors also present progressive paradigms for future achievements. Through the pages of this book, readers will understand and hopefully appreciate what can be done to promote positive college bound self-efficacy, procurement of resources in the high school to college transition, exposure and access to college possibilities, and implications for practice in school counseling, education leadership, and higher education.

Book excerpt: The exploration of African American adolescents' career development has gained increasing attention in light of literature describing various barriers impacting their educational and career development and goals. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) was used as a theoretical framework to help shed light on the contextual factors that influence their career development. This study examined the relationship between career decision self-efficacy, ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement of African American high school students. The sample consisted of African American high school students enrolled in Upward Bound programs. Through quantitative methods, this study adds to the career development literature by including ethnic identity, academic self-concept, and achievement as combined factors that may impact the career development of African American adolescents. Specifically, the results of this study assists teachers, administrators, parents, and school counselors with understanding career decision self-efficacy as it relates to ethnic identity, academic self-concept, achievement, and demographic variables. This study also provides implications for career counseling interventions in schools designed to assist with career development.

Book excerpt: If African American Males hope to become viable and productive members of the global marketplace of the 21st century, they must find avenues to consistently improve their likelihood of achieving success within academia. For the past twenty years, reports from the United States Department of Education and research from scholars such as McCabe, Hampton, and Steele all reflect the widening achievement gap in education between ethnic and racial minorities and the White majority. When different ethnic and racial sub-groups were examined, African American Males were found to be the lowest achievers; furthermore, African American Males made up the largest percentage of students in developmental mathematics.

Townsel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) holds that self-efficacy and outcome expectations are primary predictors of career choice goals and actions, with contextual influences moderating those choices and actions. Racial identity research indicates that African American adolescents perceive more barriers than their White counterparts. The current study hypothesized that chronological age, racial identity attitudes, and the perception of barriers would be significant influences on self-efficacy and outcome expectations for African American adolescents. The study explored the research question using two separate stepwise regression analyses. The first analysis explored racial identity attitudes, age, and perceived barriers in relation to self efficacy. The second analysis utilized the same independent variables to assess their relationship to outcome expectations. Results of the first analysis found that 19% of the variance in career-related self-efficacy was explained by the variables age, the perception of barriers, and the racial identity attitude Internalization Multiculturalist Inclusive as measured by the Cross Racial Identity Scale (Worrell, Vandiver, & Cross, 2004). A significant model for the second analysis exploring the relationship of the independent variables to outcome expectations was not obtained. The racial identity attitude Immersion-Emersion Anti-White was the only variable related to career outcome expectations. Findings and implications for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, the enrollment of African American students in higher education has steadily increased. Furthermore, the community college system and specifically the California community college system has seen the highest rise in the enrollment of African American students. Despite the rise in their numbers, African American male students who have relied on the California community college system as a conduit to a better life continue to have the lowest academic achievement outcomes and are the most likely to leave college. Although research shows that the persistence and academic achievement of college students is linked to the interactions they have with faculty and their peers, little is known about whether these relationships are also connected to the academic achievement of African American males attending California community colleges, nor is it understood how psychosocial factors influence the achievement. This dissertation built on a study conducted by Reid (2007) in which Tinto's institutional integration theory (e.g., Tinto, 1993) was extended by assertion that African American males who are academically successful (and not just persistent) are also well integrated in the academic and social milieu of their college campuses. Reid's study also hypothesized that their level of institutional integration which influenced their academic achievement was linked to their racial identity attitudes and self-efficacy beliefs. The study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach in which twelve African American male students, who were recruited from one Southern California community college, were interviewed to learn about their educational experiences and perceptions. The goal of the study was to provide a voice to this student subgroup which continues to under-perform academically. The findings of the study highlight the importance of race, faculty connections and intrinsic motivation factors in reaching academic goals. The study provides recommendations, based on the findings, for educators, administrators and other community college stakeholders to better assist African American males attending community colleges in California to attain their educational goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the perceptions of racial identity salience, career decision-making self-efficacy and career related barriers affected the career choice traditionality for African American women. The multiple self-referent model (Brown-Collins & Sussewell, 1986) was used as a theoretical framework to conceptualize the study in order to evaluate what possible factors may influence the career development process of Black women. One hundred and eighteen women were surveyed from predominantly White and predominantly Black campuses. It was predicted that women who endorsed traditional career choices would perceive more career related barriers and have lower levels of career decision-making self-efficacy than their non-traditional counterparts. Additionally, previous research has suggested that African American women may cluster in more traditional occupations as a way to limit their exposure to racism. As a result, it was predicted that Black women who chose more traditional occupations would perceive racism as a greater career related barrier than sexism. The influence of racial identity salience, particularly the psychological and socio-political domains, on the career choice traditionality of Black women was also evaluated. The following instruments were utilized: Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy - Short Form; the African American Identity Attitudes Scale; Career Barriers Inventory - Revised; and a demographics/career questionnaire. The results did not support these hypotheses or the conceptualization of the multiple self-referent model. However, these findings suggest that the career development of Black women is a complex process that warrants further investigation. The limitations of the current study as well as directions for future research will be discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project explores self-efficacy, which includes career decision-making self-efficacy(CDMSE). CDMSE is individuals' beliefs that they can successfully complete various tasks associated with career decision-making. For many nontraditional student clients, economic and social forces impact the career development process. In response to such forces, adult re-entry students can take practical steps to prepare for finding employment or when unemployment persists. There are significant career decision-making processes incurred by adult re-entry adult students that are not being addressed during their academic preparation planning.
