Book excerpt: This book brings together for the first time the results of research on the thermal properties and temperature-related behavior of rocks with their contained fluids, under subsurface environmental conditions. These data are of increasing importance with increased application of underground processes involving high temperature and, in some cases, low temperature environments. Some of the important processes are described in which thermal data are needed. Chapters deal with thermal properties of rocks, including heat capacities, thermal conductivities and thermal diffusivities under conditions simulating subsurface environments. Discussion about the difficulty in measuring thermal properties of rock/fluid systems is included along with newly-developed models for predicting thermal properties from more-easily measured properties. The effects of thermal reactions in rocks, differential thermal expansion, and thermal alterations are discussed in separate chapters. The effects of temperature on rock properties, as distinct from the irreversible effects of heating, are reviewed. Lastly the book deals with wellbore applications of thermal and high-temperature behavior of rocks and methods of deducing thermal properties from geophysical logs run in boreholes. Appendices include thermal units conversion factors and thermal properties of some typical reservoir rocks and fluids.

Book excerpt: The supply and protection of groundwater, the production of hydrocarbon reservoirs, land subsidence in coastal areas, exploitation of geothermal energy, the long-term disposal of critical wastes ... What do these issues have in common besides their high socio-economic impact? They are all closely related to fluid flow in porous and/or fractured rock. As the conditions of fluid flow in many cases depend on the mechanical behavior of rocks, coupling between the liquid phase and the rock matrix can generally not be neglected. For the past five years or so, studies of rock physics and rock mechanics linked to coupling phenomena have received increased attention. In recognition of this, a Euroconference on thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling in fractured rock was held at Bad Honnef, Germany, in November 2000. Most of the twenty papers collected in this volume were presented at this meeting. The contributions lead to deeper insight in processes where such coupling is relevant.

Book excerpt: The collection of papers in this volume is a direct result of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists Research Symposium on "Thermal History of Sedimentary Basins: Methods and Case Histories" held as part of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Annual Convention in New Orleans in March 1985. The original goal of the sym posium was to provide a forum where specialists from a variety of dis ciplines could present their views of methods that can be used to study the thermal history of a sedimentary basin or an important portion of a basin. An explicit part of that goal was to illustrate each method by presentation of a case history application. The original goal is addressed by the chapters in this volume, each of which emphasizes a somewhat different approach and gives field data in one way or another to illustrate the practical useful ness ofthe method. The significance of our relative ignorance of the thermal conductivities of sedimentary rocks, especially shales, in efforts to understand or model sedimentary basin thermal histories and maturation levels is a major thrust of the chapter by Blackwell and Steele. Creaney focuses on variations in kerogen composition in source rocks of different depositional environments and the degree to which these chem- . ically distinct kerogens respond differently to progressive burial heating.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this research were: 1) to investigate the relationship between thermal conductivity of rock and the 11engineeringll properties (Young's modulus and dynamic elastic constants) and 2) to evaluate a .point source technique; the Thermal Comparator", as a1i-c alternative to the divided bar for measuring thermal conductivity of rock. A suite of six rock types including a gabbro, granodiorite, dunite, dacite, serpentinite and tholeiitic basalt from the U.S. Bureau.-, of Mines' NASA suite comprised the test samples. These rocks were· previously documented and described petrographically by the Bureau of Mines and as a group represented a wide range of texture and igneous- rock composition. Thermal conductivity measurements of the NASA suite rocks were made at 25°C under saturated and unsaturated conditions using the divided bar and the Thermal Comparator methods. Samples measured in the divided bar ranged in number from 35 for the dacite to 12 for the gab bro yielding thermal conductivity values from O. 77 Wm-l K-l for dacite to 3.63 Wm -1K-1 for dunite, both in the dry state. Compressional and shear wave velocity measurements of saturated and unsaturated specimens at one bar using the ultrasonic pulse velocity method varied from a high of 7.0 km/sec for the compressional wave velocity (saturated dunite) to a low of 1.5 km/sec for the shear wave velocity (saturated dacite). Seismic wave velocities and densities for the saturated and unsaturated samples were used to calculate Young's 1DOdulus; values ranged from 2.0 x 1011 dyne cm-2 (unsaturated dunite) to 1.35 x 1011 dyne cm-2 (unsaturated dacite). A linear regression analysis of thermal conductivity data as the dependent variable for the saturated and unsaturated conditions was. accomplished by inputing the dynamic and static mechanical test result as independent variables. Twelve equations relating thermal conductivity to seismic velocities and the dynamic and static elastic moduli resulted. These equations were tested using a list of ten rock type with known seismic velocities, densities and thermal conductivities and inputing these data to predict their thermal conductivities using the equations from regression analysis. Thermal conductivity values were predicted to within ± 30% for four of the ten rock types; the variation was greater than ± 30'% for the remainder. Best results were obtained from the equations relating shear wave velocity and shear modulus to· thermal conductivity. K-Saturated = (0.916 ± 0.348)V s - 0.477 K-Saturated = (0.559 ± 0.182)G + 0.698 where: K= thermal conductivity, Wm-1 K-1 V = shear wave velocity, km sec-1 G= shear modulus, dyne cm -2 x 10 -11 When seismic velocities measured at 1000 bars were substituted into the equations, the predicted thermal conductivities were within ± 30%for seven of the ten rocks. This suggests some of the scatter in the predicted values is due to variability in seismic velocities and thermal conductivities at pressures less than 1000 bars. It is therefore concluded that elastic moduli measured at one bar cannot consistently predict accurate values for thermal conductivity of rock. Comparison of thermal conductivity data from the Thermal Comparator and the divided bar indicated the Thermal Comparator could be u1ed for accurate determination of thermal conductivity for rocks in the saturated state which poses a mean grain size less than 0.2 mm, pro vided a large number of readings were made (approximately 100) and the surface finish of the calibration references matched those of the sample. The difficulty of preparation and consequent time expenditure for numerous reading shows the Thermal Comparator method to be less efficient than the divided bar for determining thermal conductivity of rock.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently there has been growing interest in the physical properties of rocks. To interpret data on the geophysical fields observed near the Earth's surface, we must know the physical properties of the materials composing the interior. Moreover, the development of geophysical methods (in particular, electrical methods) is necessitating a multiple approach to the study of the physical properties of rocks and minerals. In connection with problems now appearing, the physical properties of rocks must be studied in the laboratory under var ious thermodynamic conditions. Electrical methods of geophysi cal exploration often may require only data obtained at atmos pheric pressure and room temperature, or at temperatures below 100°C. If, however, we have in mind geophysical field observa tions on the composition and state of matter deep in the Earth's crust and mantle, we must conduct laboratory experiments at high pressures and temperatures. For example, in interpreting data from geomagnetic soundings of the mantle, we may need experi mental results on the electrical properties of rocks at pressures of tens of kilobars and temperatures of the order of lOOO°C. In this connection, we must remember that pressure has relatively little effect on the electrical properties of rocks, whereas, tem perature affects them very strongly. v vi FOREWORD At present, while research into the mechanical properties of rocks (relating to the problems of geophysics, geochemistry, geology, and mining) is pressing forward on a wide front, much less work is being done with electrical properties.
