Book excerpt: There has been an ever increasing percentage of beginning teachers who leave the teaching profession within the first five years. The overall purpose of this study was to gain insight into servant leadership characteristics and the impact on new teacher retention. The researcher implemented quantitative research methods to investigate the relationship between servant leadership of principals and beginning teacher's job satisfaction and intent to stay. Data was gathered via two surveys to collect data on beginning teacher perception of servant leadership characteristics displayed by their principal and servant leadership traits which contribute to beginning teacher job satisfaction and intent to stay. Participants included beginning teachers currently employed in south-central Missouri. For this study, a random sample was collected from beginning teachers with five years teaching experience or less. The participants included Missouri certified teachers at various grade levels and areas of certification. The study yielded a high rate of response from survey participants. Data analysis revealed a positive perception by beginning teachers of their principals' servant leadership characteristics. Correlations showed a statistically significant, positive relationship between servant leadership and beginning teacher job satisfaction. In addition, correlations showed a statistically significant, positive relationship between servant leadership and beginning teacher intent to stay. This study has implications for public school administration by highlighting servant leadership characteristics including empowerment, vision, agapao love, and humility.

Book excerpt: Many teachers have become dissatisfied with their jobs, leaving their school district or the field of education to purse other careers outside of education. Recently, teacher attrition has been a problem for schools in Tennessee. The shortage of teachers in Tennessee led to the elimination of the Teacher Performance Assessment by the Tennessee State Board of Education for job-embedded educator licensure candidates. The combined SLQ and TJSQ survey was sent to 156 certified middle school teachers from four school districts located in northeast Tennessee. Thirty-six certified middle school teachers completed the survey. I investigated if there was a relationship between teachers’ perceived level of middle school principals’ servant leadership practices and teacher job satisfaction. I also investigated if the teachers’ perceived level of middle school principals’ servant leadership practices, years of teaching experience, or the highest academic degree attained (B.S., M.A., Ed.S, Doctorate) predicted the level of teacher job satisfaction in northeast Tennessee middle schools. I found teachers’ perception of the level of servant leadership by their principals did significantly predict job satisfaction for middle school teachers in northeast Tennessee. I also found neither years of teaching experience nor the highest academic degree attained (B.S., M.A., Ed.S, Doctorate) significantly predicted job satisfaction for middle school teachers in northeast Tennessee.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the relationship between elementary teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership behavior and how these perceptions relate to their job satisfaction. Perceptions were measured by the Leadership Behavior Instrument and the Job Satisfaction Survey. The respondents for the surveys worked in Southeast Tennessee and Northeast Mississippi. This study was guided by the following four questions: 1: How do elementary teachers perceive the leadership behavior of principals in the domains of human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict; 2) To what extent to elementary teachers express satisfaction with their jobs in the domains of supervision, contingent rewards, operating procedures, coworkers, nature of work, and communication; 3) What is the relationship between elementary teachers' perceptions of their leaders' leadership behaviors in the domains of human relations, trust/decision making, instructional leadership, control, and conflict and their overall job satisfaction; and 4) Are there differences in the extent of the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their leaders' leadership behaviors in the five domains, and their overall job satisfaction by variables such as level of education, amount of time at current school, and years of teaching experience? The results of this study indicated that there is a strong correlation between teachers' perceptions of leadership behavior and their job satisfaction. The results of this study did not find a significant correlation between job satisfaction and level of education, amount of time at current school, and years of teaching experience.

Book excerpt: Many studies have been conducted on principal leadership and employee perceptions in the corporate and public sector. However, there are gaps in the research regarding the relationship between the perception of principal leadership practices and one dimension of person-organization fit, job satisfaction, in the specific demographic of teachers in the Southeast Region of the Association of Christian Schools International. This study was conducted to begin the process of understanding this phenomenon. Kouzes and Posner's (2012) five practice of exemplary leadership and the theoretical framework of person-organization fit supported the development of this study (Kristof-Brown & Guay, 2011). Teachers from the population of accredited Christian schools in the Southeast Region of the Association of Christian Schools International completed Likert-style surveys using the Leadership Practices Inventory (Observer) and Job Satisfaction Survey. A multiple linear regression was conducted to test the hypotheses concerning the relationship between teacher perceptions of leadership practices and job satisfaction. The results demonstrated a relationship between the combination of the five leadership practices, the specific Enable Others to Act practice and teacher job satisfaction. Further research would include similar studies that examine leadership practices and other dimensions of person-organization fit utilizing quantitative and qualitative research designs. The implication of this study provides a basis for Christian schools to implement training and mentoring programs for school leaders with a focus on the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership to intentionally lead with a Biblical worldview.

Eighty-one high school teachers completed the School Leadership Culture Inventory (SLCI) and the Professional Learning Community Assessment - Revised (PLCA-R) to measure their perceptions of principal servant leadership characteristics and their own engagement, empowerment, and collaboration in professional development. A correlational design was employed to determine relationships between the variables. As hypothesized, servant leadership characteristics were positively correlated to teacher feelings of engagement in professional development, consisting of Shared Personal Practice (r=.502) and Collective Learning and Application (r=.565). In addition, the servant leadership characteristic of Commitment to the Growth of People was positively correlated with Empowerment in Professional Development and the servant leadership characteristic of Building Community was also positively correlated to Collaborative Working Environments (r=.385; r=.518).
