Download or read book Parenting-related Social Support for Mothers of Adolescents written by Rebecca L. Boerger and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parenting-related social support, contact, and rejection were studied in a sample of 96 mothers of adolescents. Participants were 40 African American and 56 White mothers living in a racially and economically diverse suburban community of approximately 80,000, which is part of a large metropolitan area in the Midwest. Forty-two mothers were divorced while 54 were in intact marriages with the target child's father. Mothers answered a series of questions about four key network members: the mother's mother, another family member, the child's father, and a friend. Divorced mothers reported that support and contact from the child's father were rare, and they did not compensate for this loss with increased support and contact from the other three key network members. In initial analyses, African American mothers reported increased support and/or contact from family, but these differences were no longer significant when the analyses controlled for income. Married mothers reported the same support from child's father regardless of race, but divorced African Americans received less support from him than divorced Whites. All mothers reported low levels of network rejection, with few significant group differences, but these differences were eliminated by controlling for education. This research stresses the need for analysis of rejection as well as support, support related to important social identities, and the impact of demographic variables on the provision and receipt of support.

Download or read book Interwoven Lives written by Keri Weed and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2001-03 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite a growing body of scholarship on the phenomenon of adolescent parenting, minimal attention has been given to investigating systematic changes in adolescent mothers' and their children's psychological functioning over time. This book reports on a longitudinal study conducted to examine the social and psychological consequences of teen parenting for both mothers and their children. Qualitative and quantitative analyses are used to explain why some mothers and children fare better than others, showing that the lives and developmental trajectories of adolescent mothers and children are inextricably interwoven and closely linked to the social contexts within which they live. The book closes with social policy implications of the research including recommendations for intervention programs and policies to help adolescent parents and their children achieve developmental success and find happiness.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Health - Public Health, grade: 2, , language: English, abstract: This study examined the relationship between marriage, social support, and psychological health among impoverished, rural mothers. While research suggests marital status and social support are negatively correlated with depression, research investigating such relationships and effects on poor, rural mothers over time is scant. To examine the roles of marital status, social support, and time on depression, mean comparison and analysis of variance were run for depression levels across time, categories of partnership, categories of social support, and categories of change in marital status over time. While findings revealed that marital status had little effect on depression levels, social support appeared to be negatively correlated with depression. Furthermore, mothers who maintained marital status and reported high social support reported the lowest depression levels. Findings contribute to the limited body of research focusing on health in rural areas and yield valuable knowledge about the experience of psychological health among impoverished, rural mothers.
