Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine if it was possible to predict retention within the University of Missouri-Columbia residence halls based on residents' perceptions of their Community Advisors/Resident Assistants and of their social interaction environment within living units. A 13% overall decline in the absolute number of students choosing to live in the halls within little more than ten years gave importance to the question of factors which might impact residence hall retention rates. The literature review indicated that the immediate environment of students played a major role in the degree to which new students became integrated into the campus. In order to help keep the focus on the students' immediate environment as opposed to the larger campus environment, social systems concepts and terminology was employed. Students were more likely to persist in college who became involved with a peer group which helped them to come integrated into the social and academic sub-systems of the campus. Community Advisors/Resident Assistants were identified as having a major role in the development and maintenance of the peer group social system within the residence hall living units. Two scales were developed to measure residents' perceptions of their Community Advisors/Resident Assistants and their immediate social interaction environment. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient confirmed the two scales (Community Advisor scale and Social Interaction and Structure scale) were correlated with each other at the.05 level of significance. A multiple analysis of variance and two one-way analyses of variance were used to test the relationship between the two scales and the retention of residents in the residence halls in the following fall semester. None of these three analyses were significant at the.05 specified level.

This time spent in the residence halls is a time of transition; living on their own, for what may be the first time for many, can be a struggle. Students are adjusting to a new way of life. These residence halls can have a significant influence on students' perception of sense of community. If positive, this may help increase students retention rate after freshman year. It is important to understand this transition, what aids in the transition, and how the physical environment plays a part in this transition as to create a more positive experience for students to come and stay. The purpose of this study was to explore university dormitory residents' perceptions of common areas, and the role of these common areas in their sense of community and belonging. Sense of community is a strong indicator of a successful transition. This study addressed four research questions: Question #1: What are student's general perceptions of common areas? Question #2: How do students use the common space? Question #3: What are students' perceptions of the function and aesthetics design of the common area? Question #4: How do students' use this space to socialize with others? The method used in this study consisted of semi-structured interviews conducted by the student researcher. The participants were recruited through an email listserv as well as in-person convenience sampling. These interviews were conducted in a private room, audio recorded and transcribed for analysis. The data were coded for significant themes. These themes focused on the use of the common space; the aesthetics as well as the students' overall perception of their transition. We see a connection with the physical environment and the students place attachment in terms of experiences shared with other students, regardless of these experiences' being in work or social situations. This membership is how we see the sense of community develop. The students contributed their successful transition to knowing not only the physical environment as well as in relationships formed on campus. This information may aid student housing personnel as they work with students as well as students time on campus, specifically, the students transitioning to campus living. The data may be used in developing student evaluations as well as updates on the residence hall furnishing and equipment. Understanding more about the student experience and their perception of this experience may aid in creating a better student experience and thus result in higher retention rates.

Book excerpt: This study compared students' perceptions and satisfaction as they related to their place of residence. In addition, this study sought to determine if a difference existed between student retention rates from their first year in college to their second year and one's grade point average with respect to one's place of residence within the collegiate setting. As such, the problem this study examined was the overall impact of where a first-time-in-college student lived within the University of Central Florida housing system and how that living environment impacted students' levels of satisfaction, overall retention rates, and cumulative grade point averages. The data used for this study were obtained from a previously distributed survey conducted by the Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of Central Florida in February 2007. Secondary data were obtained through the Department of Institutional Research at the University of Central Florida. A website link to an optional, self-administered Internet-based survey was sent via email to University of Central Florida students residing in university owned housing and university affiliated housing. The size of the sample was determined by the number of delivered emails 3800 for university owned housing, 1,500 for university affiliated housing (Towers), and 1,831 for university affiliated housing (Pegasus Landing). Of the total populations: 1) 38.57 percent were returned for university owned housing, 2) 26.26 percent were returned for university affiliated (Towers at Golden Knights Plaza), and 3) 24.63 percent were returned for university affiliated housing (Pegasus Landing). There were many statistically significant relationships. Consistently, students residing in university owned housing showed higher satisfaction and agreement levels when compared with students living in university affiliated housing. Additionally, students living in university owned housing showed a higher retention rate and cumulative grade point average when compared with students living in university affiliated housing.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the changes in the perception of the university environment that occurred in four selected .groups of freshmen residence hall students: females residents in single-sex halls (N = 150), female residents in coeducational halls (N = 89), male residents in single-sex halls (N = 95), and male residents in coeducational halls (N = 96). The College and University Environment Scales was the instrument utilized to measure the students' perceptions of the university environment. Additional data were gathered from files in the Residence Hall Programs Office and from a brief questionnaire compiled by the investigator. During the week prior to the Fall term 1970 at Oregon State University the participants were administered the CUES and the supplemental questionnaire. The CUES was readministered six months later following two terms of in-residence living by the participants. The data was subjected to statistical analysis with the .05 level of significance being accepted as indicating degrees of confidence that differences were real. Hypotheses were stated in the null form indicating that, by comparison, no significant differences would appear. The following groups were statistically treated relative to the perceptual change in the university environment that occurred: 1. Freshmen females residing in single-sex residence halls. 2. Freshmen females residing in coeducational residence halls. 3. Freshmen males residing in single-sex residence halls. 4. Freshmen males residing in coeducational residence halls. The following group comparisons were statistically treated relative to differences in degree of change in perception of the university environment that occurred: 1. Freshmen females residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen females residing in single-sex residence halls. 2. Freshmen males residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen males residing in single-sex residence halls. 3. Freshmen residing in coeducational residence halls and freshmen residing in single-sex residence halls. 4. Freshmen males residing in residence halls and freshmen females residing in residence halls. 5. Interaction of coeducational and single-sex residence halls and freshmen male and female residents. From the findings of this study the following conclusions were drawn. 1. Freshmen students residing in residence halls change their perceptions of the university environment significantly on most scales and in a negative direction during their first six months of attendance at college. 2. Freshmen female residents in single-sex residence halls experience a significantly greater degree of change in their perception of the university environment on the Awareness scale than do freshmen female residents in coeducational residence halls. 3. Freshmen male residents in single-sex residence halls do not differ significantly in the degree of change in their perceptions of the university environment than do freshmen male residents in coeducational residence halls. 4. Freshmen residents in single-sex residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Awareness scale than do freshmen residents in coeducational residence halls. 5. Freshmen females residing in residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Community scale than do freshmen males residing in residence halls. 6. Freshmen males residing in residence halls change their perception of the university environment to a significantly greater degree on the Practicality scale than do freshmen females residing in residence halls. 7. A significant relationship exists between sex and type of residence hall on the Scholarship scale. Book excerpt: This study was an explanatory research design that utilized a correlational approach to explore the relationship of residential factors with academic variables explained by first and second year grade point average (GPA), behavioral variables explained by incidences of student conduct violations, and engagement explained by involvement in activities and perceptions of campus environment. This research study used qualitative and quantitative data to; explore the effect that student housing has on academic achievement as explained by grade point average and retention from first to second year, examine the effect that housing has on student behavior as explained by the frequency of violations of the student code of conduct, and provide a deeper understanding of student engagement and explore its relationship with student housing. The quantitative component consisted of three data sets that included 37,048 records of first- and second-year students enrolled at the institution between the 2014-2019, behavioral data composed of 4,635 records of conduct violations that occurred in residence halls between 2014-2020, and a data set of survey responses from 239 respondents that were composed of questions related to student demographic, financial, and residential factors, as well as questions that were related to student participation and engagement with social and academic aspects of campus life. The qualitative component consisted of data from student interviews related to their academic and social experience on campus which supplemented the findings of the quantitative analysis. The findings of this research indicated that there is a strong correlation that academic achievement, behavior, and engagement has with the residential environment. Findings demonstrated that different types of housing and room types had a significant effect on grade point average and retention from first to second year. The findings also demonstrated that the effects of room types, as it relates to room configuration, was significant with negative student behavior and levels of engagement. A higher number of roommates in student housing was found to increase occurrences of student conduct violations and to decrease measures of student engagement. These findings provide insight into aspects of student housing that play an important role in a students' success and experiences. This study attempted to address gaps in literature that examine how the physical space of a residential hall impacts the student experience. The primary objectives of this study were to explore the effect that student housing has on academic achievement and retention from first to second year, to examine the effect that housing has on student behavior, to provide a deeper understanding of student engagement and its relationship with student housing. The implications from this study contribute to the practical and theoretical frameworks on student integration and development by revealing the residential factors that produced the greatest influence on student academic achievement, retention from first to second year, conduct behavior, and engagement. In practice, this research can be used to inform the following; institutional housing and occupancy systems, design and development of residence hall structures, decisions related to campus planning, and the use of public-private partnerships for student housing.

This thesis explores dormitories, Greek Housing, living-learning communities, and residential-learning communities but most importantly, closely examines theme communities & residential halls and the effects on student retention. Historically traditional dorms or dormitories were the go to option to house students as well as faculty members. This thesis will closely examine the themed communities and residential halls in order to determine if there is a connection between these housing techniques and college and university students' retention rates. Throughout, the definitions of student development theory and retention are used to develop the study and to detect any connection between retention and housing. The purpose of this thesis was to learn if there is a connection between students' retention rates, theme communities, and residential halls. The reviewed literature identified that students who residence in theme communities and residential halls helps students familiarize themselves with the campus and bond with faculty, staff, and peers. The results from the survey questionnaires showed that the students extremely appreciate the theme communities and believe it plays a positive role in their grades. The results also indicated that residential halls assist in students' decisions to re-enroll at Sacramento State University. The study is both qualitative and quantitative in nature. A survey questionnaire was created using mostly Likert scale questions in addition to other types of questions that provided qualitative data from the student sample population. The residential advisors collected the data manually within the themed communities through the survey questionnaires. After the completed survey questionnaires were gathered, the researcher inputted the responses into Survey Monkey to analyze the data. The analyzed data was then used to create tables to display the results. The combined findings from the literature review and the survey questionnaire data supports the conclusions of a positive and influential connection between students housing assignments and their retention rates. It is evident from the literature review and the survey results, habitual and supportive interactions with faculty, staff, and peer residents help themed and learning-community residents connect to their colleges and universities. As a result, the researcher suggests five major recommendations. The first is all housing and residential life administration should transition out of using dorms or traditional dormitories as a student housing resource; the second major recommendation is all housing and residential life administration and affiliated researchers utilize uniform housing terms and labels; the third major recommendation is that residence halls should use a faculty member to staff the halls; the fourth recommendation suggests that all learning communities have affiliated residential support staff, as well as affiliated faculty members offices and apartments inside of the communities. These recommendations will only enhance the student's residential life on campus and continue to increase retention by building stronger bonds with faculty, staff and peers.
