Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore the relation between selected Socio-economic and parenting factors on the academic performance of pupils. The study used a descriptive research designed type. A total of twenty-nine (29) pupils who are in Basic two were used for the study. Questionnaires and test were the instruments used in gathering data on pupils and their parents. Responses from the pupils and their parents were treated statistically using frequency tables, percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson’s Correlation as the tools. Major findings from the study indicated that pupils’ academic performance is just above average; and that the Socio-economic and parenting factors of the parents of the pupils’ are also average. The study further established that there is a significant, medium and positive relation existing between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and pupils’ academic performance; the parenting attitudes and pupils’ academic performance. Finally, the study again established that there is a significant, medium relation between the Socio-economic status of pupils’ parents and their parenting attitude or responsible parenting. Based the findings, suggestions in the form of recommendations were offered, which included; the need for deepened teacher – parent collaboration and the school undertaking activities to attract parents to the school.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses problems and challenges that face educational measurement at a time when multipurpose usage of observational data from educational assessments, tests and international surveys has become a growing global trend. While the construction of educational measures and use of educational data offer many opportunities, they also require awareness of the numerous threats to validity and methods of reducing such threats. Written by leading international scholars, the book demonstrates the complexity of educational measurement by addressing three broad and interrelated topics. The first part discusses cognitive abilities, including studies on fluid intelligence, its improvement and its links to aptitude tests for admission to higher education. The second part focuses on the effects of school and teacher-related factors on school outcomes at individual and group levels, and uses international studies to analyze causes. The third part presents analytical techniques and measurement methods to improve reliability, for example factor analysis using Bayesian estimators, bi-factor analysis, model misfit and solutions, and discusses balance issues in reporting test results. The book provides examples of state-of-the-art analytical techniques for pursuing fundamental research problems, and the latest advances in measurement methods, with a focus on validity improvement. Eminent researchers discuss and provide insights into questions such as: Is it possible to train individuals to think at a higher level than normal for their age? What determines prospective preschool teachers’ skill to perceive mathematics-related preschool situations? Can international indicator design and instruments be improved to use trends and national context variables more efficiently? Can indicator data at national, school and class levels be compared easier? Are value-added measures of teacher effectiveness valid when it comes to hiring and promoting teachers? Is money better spent on teacher training than on smaller class-size? How do theory and empirical statistical data intertwine in building structures of understanding? This book is inspired by the career and personal influence of the Swedish scholar Professor Jan-Eric Gustafsson, renowned for his research on individual differences, especially the structure of cognitive abilities, and on the effects of education on knowledge and skills.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject Pedagogy - School System, Educational and School Politics, , language: English, abstract: Parental attitude towards education is consistently found to be positively associated with a student's academic performance. However, there has been little investigation about mechanisms that explain this association. The objective of the study was to establish the relationship between parental attitude towards education and academic performance of day secondary students. The specific research objectives were: to establish the relationship between parents’ attitude towards educational involvement and academic performance of day secondary school students; to examine the relationship between parents’ attitude towards absenteeism and academic performance of day secondary school students; to establish the relationship between parents’ attitude towards provision of basic educational needs and academic performance of day secondary students in Uasin Gishu. The theoretical framework of this study was derived from functionalist and learning theories. The Data for this study was collected from primary and secondary sources. The research instruments were questionnaires for students and parents, interview schedules for parents and teachers and parent-child relationship scale for students. The study population comprised of 1804 students, 80 parents representatives and 51 teachers. A correlation research design was adopted based on a sample drawn from five secondary schools in the study area. Purposive sampling was used to select a sample 18 teachers and 36 parents while stratified random sampling was used in the selection of 180 students. Spearman Brown Prophesy coefficient formula was used to test the internal consistency of questionnaires and interview schedules after piloting had been done. Parent-child relationship scale reliability was established by use of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. The reliability coefficients of 0.70 at 0.05 level of significance were obtained. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, means and percentages were used in analyzing data. The findings of the study show that parental attitude towards education affects academic performance of day secondary school students in Uasin Gishu. The study concluded and recommended that school administrators and policy makers find ways of enhancing parental involvement towards education.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - Politics, Political Education, grade: 1.300, course: Doctor in Development Education, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discuss parental involvement in learning and its implication to the academic achievement of learners. It discusses parental involvement in learning, parents as leaders, parents as active partner in learning and parent-school connection. Also, it shows the challenges of parental involvement in learning, strategies for encouraging parental involvement in learning and the benefits of parental involvement. After a thorough reviews of the previous studies and based on the readings, this paper concluded that parental involvement is associated with a wide range of positive child outcomes in schools, such as good academic skills, positive attitudes and social competence. Parental involvement is a combination of commitment and active participation on the part of the parent to the school and to the student. There are many problems concerned with involvement. Organizations that advocate for education at the grassroots level are growing in number and they are working to organize parents, offering increased opportunities for parents to engage in education policy issues. The recommendation of this paper is to have a parental involvement in learning to make learning for children pleasant and encourages them to work even more as they seek to make those closest to them proud.
