Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between principals' transformational leadership and teachers' motivation as perceived by teachers in the context of Islamic private schools in Songkhla, Southern Thailand. This study also investigates whether teachers' demographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, and years of teaching experience, impact their perceptions toward principals' transformational leadership practices. The study uses survey questionnaire to collect data and analyzes the data using descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and one way ANOVA. The respondents are 174 teachers from six selected Islamic private schools in Songkhla. The findings indicate that teachers perceive their principals exhibited transformational leadership more frequently than transactional leadership. Idealized influence (IIB & IIA) and inspirational motivation (IM) are found to be the greatest leadership practices among the principals, and individual consideration (IC) and intellectual stimulation (IS) are rated lowest among transformational leadership aspects. The results of the regression analysis indicate that teachers' motivation is significantly related to principals' transformational leadership practices. The findings demonstrate that individual consideration factor (IC) highly affect all dimensions of teachers' motivation, including attitude towards work, commitment/effort, challenge, and professional development; inspirational motivation behaviour (IM) impact on increasing teachers' positive attitude towards work, commitment or effort to teach, and challenge, and the idealized influence (IIA and IIB) are relative to teachers' attitude towards teaching, effort or commitment, and professional development. However, no significant relationship between principals' intellectual stimulation (IS) factor and teachers' motivation is found in this study. The findings from one way ANOVA reveal gender, marital status, and age of teachers effect their perceptions toward the principals' transformational leadership practices. Single, female teachers aged between 30 to 45 years old view principals displaying more transformational leadership than do the other groups. Based on these findings, implications are that current emphasis on transformational leadership for school effectiveness, improving teachers' motivation and increasing students' achievement are moving toward the right direction, which authorities should give more support, especially to intellectual stimulation and individual consideration aspects of principals.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of the study is to investigate the interactive effects of principal's leadership styles (INTELS) Principal Transformational Leadership Style (PTLS) and Principal Strategic Leadership Style (PSLS)] and Quality Assurance Initiatives (QAI) on Teacher Commitment (TC) in the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in Southern Thailand. The study also attempted to measure the strength of mediating variable, quality assurance initiatives on the relationship between principal leadership styles and teacher commitments in the schools concerned. As the study was a quantitative in nature, the sample size was 553 (95% confidence interval and ± 4%) represented by Muslim teachers from the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in three provinces (Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat), in Southern Thailand. This study utilized the two-steps analysis of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) techniques. The first four research questions were addressed by analyzing all four measurement models and the study found that the proposed constructs namely PTLS, PSLS, QAI and TC items were loaded significantly into their respective constructs. In the next step of SEM technique, the fifth and sixth research questions were addressed by evaluating and re-specifying the hypothesized model. The results indicated that the re-specified model was very encouraging with the values of X2/df = 2.684, TLI = 893, CFI = .901, GFI = .850, IFI = .90 and RMSEA = .054. From the re-specified model of the study, it was found that PTLS and PSLS factors influenced TC. The model also revealed that only two factors of PTLS, namely visionary (V) and individual orientation (IO) directly influenced TC and four factors of PSLS, namely wisdom (WD), strategic orientation (SO), strategic competence (SC) and strategic translation (ST) directly influenced TC. As for the research questions number 7, 8 and 9, the study proved that the mediating variable, QAI did not significantly influence the relationships between PTLS and PSLS with TC. Finally, the study managed to prove that the hypothesized model fit to the data and hence represent the model of the study. Some of the practical implications are that some aspects of the PTLS and PSLS are deemed important to the principals of the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in Southern Thailand and to the policy makers concerned in their strategies to improve the survivability of the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in Southern Thailand. Theoretically, the study managed to contribute to the literature in terms of the need of the principals of the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in Southern Thailand to practice some factors of PTLS and PSLS for the betterment of the schools concerned. The novelty of the study indeed related to the modern strategies that can be used effectively in improving the Islamic Private Secondary Schools in southern Thailand particularly the PTLS and PSLS.

Book excerpt: This study examined the practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership among principals in Islamic private secondary schools in Narathiwat, Thailand. An attempt was also made to explore teachers' perception of the practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership among principals in Narathiwat. To achieve these purposes, a questionnaire was specifically designed to get information from the respondents who were teachers. The descriptive analysis method was employed to describe the teachers' perception regarding practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership. A questionnaire, using Five Point Likert Scale, was used as the instrument to collect the data. The sample of this study was randomly selected. A total of 302 respondents from 10 schools, consisting of 94 male and 208 female teachers were selected for this study. Percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test and Anova were computed for research questions. The analysis revealed that the teachers' perception towards principals' practice and effectiveness of distributed leadership in Islamic private secondary schools in Narathiwat generally appear to be positive. The findings also indicated that the teachers' perception showed a non-statistical significant difference based on gender, qualification and years of teaching experience. However, the finding showed a statistical relationship between the principals' practice and effectiveness. Finally, the study provided recommendations on how to improve the practice of distributed leadership practice in schools and suggested interesting further researches.

Book excerpt: Experts on educational reform agree that effective principals are pivotal to large-scale, sustainable change at the school level. Principals with a transformational leadership orientation are reported to have more success in promoting positive school change. In order to promote positive reform in literacy instruction, it is important to investigate the relationship between leadership practices and teachers' motivation, capacity, and work setting, as well as how these factors relate to one another. This correlational study is aimed at the exploration of the relationship among the factors related to affecting change in teachers' practice in literacy instruction: teachers' motivation, capacity, and work setting as related to change; and the and elements of transformational principal leadership as they relate to altering teachers' practice in literacy instruction.--partial abstract.

Book excerpt: School principals are continually searching for leadership practices that have the potential to directly enhance adult behavior and indirectly and positively influence student achievement. Previous research has indicated that a positive and statistically significant relationship exists between collective teacher efficacy beliefs and principal transformational leadership practices (Demir, 2008; Ninkovic & Floric, 2018; Prelli, 2016; Ross & Gray, 2006). In addition, schools characterized by higher levels of collective teacher efficacy have demonstrated higher levels of student achievement. Previous studies of collective teacher efficacy have focused on group outcomes based on the levels of collective efficacy beliefs held by the teacher's studied. However, the research examining the relationship between specific leadership practices associated with transformational leaders that may develop and/or strengthen collective teacher efficacy beliefs has been minimal. The purpose of this study was to examine whether principal transformational leadership practices statistically significantly predicted collective teacher efficacy beliefs amongst K-12 teachers, while taking the contextual conditions of building level and teacher experience into consideration. Participants consisted of voluntary educators from one school district serving five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. A total of 233 participants completed the Educational Leadership Survey, Collective Efficacy Scale: Short Form, and demographic questionnaire. Results from the hierarchical linear multiple regression indicated that transformational leadership practices, when taken collectively with the demographic variables of building level and teacher experience, statistically significantly predicted collective efficacy beliefs in teachers. The positive and statistically significant relationship between transformational leadership practices and collective teacher efficacy beliefs indicated that as transformational leadership practices increase, so does collective efficacy beliefs in teachers. The results of this study provide practical applications to the daily work of principals in the implementation of targeted transformational leadership practices that are the strongest predictors of collective efficacy beliefs of teachers.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among three factors namely, Effective School Management (ESM), Teacher Efficacy (TE) and Quality Teaching (QT). A sample of 585 teachers from forty-seven Islamic private secondary schools in Songkhla Thailand participated in this study. This study utilized both Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to establish the psychometric properties of each construct. The results of EFA and CFA demonstrated that ESM represented by five distinct factors, while TE by three distinct factors and QT by two distinct factors. In addition, the results from measurement models also found evidence of construct validity and reliability for the factors that constituted the three constructs (ESM, TE, and QT). The re-specified model was tested as the data did not fit the hypothesized model. Based on the new model, it was found that ESM and TE influenced QT. The model revealed that five-factor of ESM, namely Strong Instructional Leadership (SIL), Safe and Orderly Environment (SOE), Frequency Monitoring Student Progress (FMS), Opportunity to Learn and Time on Task (OtL), and School and Home Relationship (SHR) has directly influenced QT. Similarly, three-factor of TE namely, efficacy for Student Engagement (StdE), efficacy for Instructional Strategy (IS) and efficacy for Classroom Management (CMg) is directly influenced QT. However, for QT, it was explained by one-factor model. The study also conducted invariant analyses of gender and teaching experience. Both gender and teaching experience were found to have no moderating impact on full-fledged structural model of Quality-Teaching (Q-T). The findings suggested that quality teaching required concerted effort from various parties, particularly school management and teachers themselves. Furthermore, Islamic private secondary schools should organize programmes such as workshops on pedagogy and material development for teachers to educate them about the importance of the quality teaching.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between teachers' perceptions towards their leadership capacity and school climate in five selected schools under the leadership of the Lovers of the Cross of Ubon Ratchathani Congregation, Thailand. The researcher used the high leadership capacity instrument adopted from Kujur (2016), and based on Lambert's (2003) Leadership Capacity School Survey (LCSS), as well as the Schools' Organizational Climate Survey (SOCS) adopted from Josaphat (2005). The results of this study showed that there was both a strong and significant relationship between the teachers' perceptions towards their leadership capacity and their school climate in the respective schools. This study discussed those respective findings and found that school improvement and student achievement could be better facilitated by increasing teacher leadership capacity and improving the educational effectiveness through the implementation of a more conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning. The teachers and administrators were recommended to identify methods to develop and offer greater opportunities for teachers to facilitate shared ideas, enhance workplace engagement opportunities, develop methods of coherent discussion, as well as to assist and support each other to achieve the school goals. This research suggested that the achievement of these recommendations could be done by developing the communication within the learning community, engaging and inspiring students, collaborating more between shareholders to strengthen leadership capacities and to ultimately improve the school climate within the school. To facilitate this, it was proposed that teachers should revamp their teaching-learning processes through professional development and training, in order to raise teachers' commitment and devotion to each individual learner.
